Unable to enter tag/name in face recognition People mode

In Lightroom Classic (ver 12.0.1), Library mode, People view (facial recognition), I can select the "yes" checkmark if LR has guessed correctly, yet when trying to type in a new name (or an existing one from the keyword panel) under the face, nothing happens. Well, it's intermittent - but I don't know why. Sometimes I can enter a name and sometimes nothing happens.

I can drag an image to already-named people. With an image selected, putting a checkmark by the keyword/name in the keyword panel adds the name.

Still, back to the name field under an image - it opens but the keyboard doesn't enter anything. I wonder if other tags are interfering somehow.

User error I'm sure. What setting am I failing to consider, or check, or what?
