Hi LightRoom experts.

(Sorry for the meaningless username, but I'm new here and cannot change the name before next month.)

For use in other tools I want to add to a photo's keywords if the photo is part of a stack, but not on top of a stack.

For this the best would be to create a filter which shows exactly that: all photos which are part of a stack, but not on top of a stack. (Then I would just apply a keyword to all of these photos.)

I tried to get there with the filter bar in LightRoom Classic, but couldn't find any attribute pertaining to stacks. I did find a 3rd Party plugin (John R. Ellis' Any Filter), but is this the only option? And if so, does it work reliably?

Any Filter does work reliably :-> Let me know via the support email address on its web page if you have any issues.

You don't need the plugin, though. Here's how to find all photos that are in a stack but not on top:

1. Select a folder, collection, or All Photographs.

2. Do Photo > Stacking > Collapse All Stacks.

3. Do Edit > Select All.

4. Do Photo > Stacking > Expand All Stacks.

5. Do Edit > Invert Selection.

The desired photos are now selected, and you can add them to the Quick Collection if needed.

Invert Selection is a little-known (and used) command. Whenever there's a puzzle finding particular photos, if there's a "not" involved (not at the top of the stack, not in a particular collection), perhaps Invert Selection might be the solution.
