Hello everyone. Someone referred me to this site as I am looking for advice and guidance on how to set up Lightroom Classic to work with my new Mac and iPhone and iPad and Synology NAS. Previously, I was running Windows and using the Adobe cloud for storage. I have almost 2 GB of images stored at Adobe. I want to stay with LR, but do not want to pay extra for Adobe cloud storage (the main reason I bought the NAS).

This transition is a bit confusing to me as I and new to both the Mac OS and NAS storage. I would like to use my NAS in place of the Adobe cloud. Ideally, I would like also to have access to my NAS-stored images from the Internet on my iPhone and iPad outside of my local home network, but for now I just want to get everything set up properly for use at home on my Mac desktop.

In Lightroom Classic, I have started syncing my Adobe-stored images to a shared folder on my NAS. This process will be complete probably by tomorrow. My first question is this: do I need also sync images in LR mobile to my NAS, or should I perhaps be doing that instead?

The images you are now downloading with Lightroom Classic should be the same images as the ones in Lightroom mobile. Lightroom Classic downloads everything that is in the cloud.

I had an issue with having my photos on a NAS with the previous versions of MacOS and LRC. I'll make a special catalog and put some pics on my NAS to restest. I'll report back if it is still an issue. I have a post on this site with my problem so I won't rehash it here in case it is solved.

Okay, for basic NAS use, you are on the right track and Johan has the answers for you on getting the Cloud data local.

The reason I bring up my issue is you may run into it down the road. I tested it with latest MacOS and LRC and it still exists. Basically, if you Edit in Photoshop option from LrC, it creates the PSD (or tif) file as designed, in the NAS folder with the original picture, but when it adds the image into the LrC catalog, the file path to the new file is wrong and it tells you it can't find the file. So you have to use the Locate file option and show LrC where the file really is. It doesn't seem to do it with Topaz DeNoise or Topaz Sharpen. If you don't use Photoshop as an external editor, are probably fine.

I don't want to start a discussion of that issue in your thread, just wanted to give a heads up.

Just tried this as I use a NAS and I can't replicate your issue. I selected a raw file in LrC, asked to 'Edit in Photoshop', changed a couple of things in PS and saved the file. It was instantly in my LrC catalogue next to the original. LrC has no problem knowing where it is. Maybe I'm not understanding your workflow correctly?

Yep, that's my workflow. You don't say whether you are Mac or Windows though, or what version of LrC you are using. If you could post that, it would let us know if we are comparing the same thing.

But as I said before, I don't want to derail this thread. Maybe a moderator could unlock my original thread and we can pick it up there.
