I'm doing some major modifications to my catalog (disassociating and combining libraries).

My most recent edit shows FOR MISSING FILES ONLY a placeholder and indication of metadata (see attached screen capture). The bulk of the library EXCEPT for the missing files show thumbnails and metadata. Not a big deal because I can recover missing data from archived information. But it will help if I can see the thumbnail. Some (but not all) of the files may have been intentionally deleted.

Lightroom won't be able to rebuild those previews unless it has access to the master files, which it cannot find. It still knows the metadata, because that is kept in the catalogue. What's your question?

As an observation, had standard previews been built then the thumbnails would have displayed the photo(s) while also reporting they are missing.
