Folder structure clean up advice needed

Hi

I'm helping a friend getting some structure in his image folders.
He have almost all in date folder structure YYYY-DD-MM.
But in one year there are 1000 just in the parent year folder.
He want these to be put in individual YYYY-DD-MM-folders.
What is the best way to accomplish this?
Creating folders and then drag and drop in the Lightroom folder panel would be very tedious.
Suggestions appreciated!

Select all images, write metadata to files and then remove them from the catalog. Import them again and let Lightroom move them into dated folders on import. Before you do this, check for virtual copies. These will be lost, so you may want to 'store' the edits as a temporary virtual copy of another image before you do this. Other things that will be lost are edit history, memberships of collections and flags.
