I am a neophyte at this. I have been resisting transferring from Aperture for years, but for obvious reasons have succumbed. I followed all the directions from LQ for importing about 7,000 pics from Aperture. 24+ hours later, I ended up with 17k+ photos. Over and above the Aperture photos, I seem to have every photo or image from my phone, iPad, etc. I seem to have every photo I have ever taken with my phone. Deleted photos, saved photos. Photos or images sent to me. I have old boarding passes, store discount coupons, pics images of paper docs I've taken, etc., etc. Any ideas why this has happened and how to resurrect? I can delete the Lightroom Masters folder and start again, but don't want to end up here again. Many thanks.

When you use the Aperture Migration Plug in, Lightroom will. Recover all of the original unedited images. And because you do not want to lose all of the work that you did on those images, Lightroom will also create derivatives from those images that reflect the Aperture edits.

I don't think that Lightroom can do that. IIRC Lightroom can import full size previews (as derivatives, not as previews) from Aperture, providing that you first create these in Aperture.

You might be correct here as it has been several years since I tried to do an Aperture migration. I do recall that there are options to import only the unedited originals or the originals and the edited previews.

Yes, there is an option to import 'Aperture previews', but of course Aperture must have created those. If Lightroom could create them, then Lightroom would also be able to create its own settings, based on what you did in Aperture.

Aperture was scriptable via AppleScript. It's at least theoretically possible that the import plugin could command Aperture to create those previews itself.

In theory, that is indeed possible. But AFAIK that is not what happened. IIRC you had to run Aperture first and create full size previews, before you imported the Aperture library. Anyway, also in that scenario it would be Aperture that created the previews, not Lightroom.

Thank you all - I think. Figured it out. Unbeknownst to me (told you I was a neophyte) Aperture keeps all deleted photos, albums, etc. The LR Aperture plug-in downloaded all photos, including the deleted ones (of which there were 9k+). Will try emptying the Aperture trash, deleting everything from LR (since the only thing in LR were the Aperture imports) and starting again. Keeping fingers crossed.

You might check out the Avalanche program for migrating from Aperture. A number of people have reported that it gives superior results to the built-in Aperture/iPhotos Importer Plug-in (which is buggy).
