In the File Handling (right-hand side of the Import dialogue) just tick ‘Don’t import Suspected Duplicates’. This does a check on filename and certain attributes and any duplicates will appear grayed out and won;t import.

Hi Paul, is there a setting somewhere (couldn't find any) where I can have "... suspected duplicates" checked all the time? I always have to manually click that checkbox each time I import (using the import function sometimes to just look if I have forgotten to import photos on my large 128 MB card).
You can save an Import preset from the "Import Preset:" pull down menu at the bottom of the Import dialog screen. That will save all the settings in the right hand panel.
