The Lightroom mobile team are on a roll. They’ve just released yet another set of major updates to both the iOS and Android apps.
iOS
- Selective Brush
- With the new selective brush, you can use your finger or an Apple Pencil to “paint” edits onto specific areas of the photo. If you’re using an Apple Pencil on an iPad Pro, or a device with 3D Touch (iPhone 6S or later), it’s even pressure sensitive. This is a great example of where touch screens excel.

- Detail panel
- The Sharpening and Noise Reduction sliders are now available in the new Detail tab. See the infographics for more details on how to use each slider, and don’t forget to double-tap on the photo to zoom into 1:1 view for accuracy.

- New iPad Interface
- The iPad has a new updated interface, with the same slider groupings used on the iPhone. The buttons down the right hand side switch between Edit, Info & Activity views. The swipe up/down gestures to flag/star photos is currently missing, but I’m assured this is only temporary.

Android
- Complete Rewrite
- Adobe has rewritten the whole app to make it faster and fully Android-native.
- New Modern Interface
- The Android version has now gained the new modern interface that first appeared on the iPhone a few months ago. This includes:
- The Organize view, where you organize your photos into collections.
- The Grid view, where you can view thumbnails and filter to hide some photos.
- The Rate & Review mode, for flagging and starring photos.
- The Info mode, which allows you to add Title and Caption
- The Edit mode, with its full set of sliders and linear/radial filters.

Visit the App Store (iOS) / Play Store (Android) to download the updates right now, and don’t forget to download your updated infographics. The mobile blog series continues on Monday.
It appears they’ve fixed the Map module bug as well in 6.12. Whenever you changed the location or the magnification, the map would disappear briefly, with a note that it was “offline.” Very annoying.
Yes, you’ll find the 6.12 release notes here: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/whats-new-in-lightroom-cc-2015-12-6-12/
Hi Victoria! I was immersed in LR CC during May 2017 on my iMac. Now several months later, I am a bit lost. How to brush in dark and blurred backgrounds? I seem to have lost a lot of brush controls. Do I need to learn Photoshop to do layers? (Fear.) What else can I not do and what else can I do that is different or new? I am primarily a wildlife photographer currently focusing on underwater (color balance and toning and all). Thanks! (PS have bought your book in print and did sign up for electronic version – yet to download. – Much fun.)
For layers, yes, that’ll be a Photoshop job. But brushing in darker backgrounds should be doable in LR. Email me a screenshot showing your lost brush controls and I’ll head you back in the right direction. It’s probably just a little triangle got toggled.
Hi Victoria,
Has anyone reported concerns with Lightroom Mobile (Android v3.0.3)? The length of time to import from the local camera is excruciatingly slow. I’m currently on the 25th minute of a single photo . I’ve selected “Enable Auto Add”, am syncing over WiFi, and have uninstalled/reinstalled on my mobile device several times (Samsung Note8). The prior version would Auto-Add relatively quickly, but the new version has taken several hours to import a handful of photos.
Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide!
That does sound frustrating Hugh. How’s it looking on the latest release?
