After many weeks of rumblings and rumors, Lightroom CC/6 is finally here! Here’s the download link for the trial. If you’re a subscriber already, you can just download from the Creative Cloud app (update – it’s being a bit slow at the moment!).
The Lightroom team have been busy, so it’s a long list. If you don’t have time to read it all right now, the highlights are marked in red.
Lightroom CC/6 Branding
- The branding has changed – it’s now Lightroom CC for subscribers and Lightroom 6 for perpetual licenses.
- Perpetual licenses ARE still available but they’re hard to find on Adobe’s website! It’s $149 for new licenses and $79 for upgrades. Note that perpetual licenses (e.g. upgrades) don’t include additional features that may be added to the subscription.
- Full boxed versions are available from third parties such as Amazon. Upgrades are only available direct from Adobe (click this link, then click Buy, then change it to an upgrade. If you’re not in the USA, select your country bottom left. Here’s the UK direct link.).
New cameras/lens support
- There are so many new cameras and lenses, I’ve moved them down to the bottom of the page.
Face Recognition
- Lightroom searches your photos for things that look like faces, and displays these faces as a grid, ready for you to identify the people.
- As you start naming people, Lightroom starts recognizing their facial features and suggesting their names for other faces that look similar, so it’s ideal for tagging family and friends.
- You may read some reviews that essentially say “don’t bother”. I don’t agree. Obviously it’s not as smart as you are, and occasionally it identifies trees as people, suggests wrong names, and misses incomplete or small faces, but if you photograph friends, family and other people you might want to identify, it can save many hours of work (and it’s more fun than normal keywording).
- Lightroom has to build an index of your photos.
- It asks for permission to build the index the first time you enter People view. You can choose to index the whole catalog or just the current folder/collection.
- If you select the whole catalog and your catalog is large, the indexing will take a while and may slow down your computer while it runs.
- If you select the current source, indexing only runs on the selected source while you’re in People view, or while you have a photo open in Loupe with the Draw Face tool active.
- If you selected the current source and later want to index the whole catalog (perhaps overnight), you can turn it on by clicking the pause button in the Activity Center or by going to Catalog Settings > Automatically detect faces in all photos.
- New photos are automatically indexed while importing if you have face recognition enabled for the whole catalog.
- People View is split into Named People and Unnamed People sections.
- Access the People view via the Face icon on the toolbar, via the View menu or the O key.
- It shows all the faces that have been detected in the currently selected source.
- When you name a face, or a stack of faces, the faces move from the Unnamed People section to the Named People section.
- To add a name:
- Click under the photo and type the person’s name. Auto-complete only shows existing people’s names.
- Tip – Always use full and unique names (e.g. don’t just mark a face as Victoria in case you know more than one Victoria, and if father and son are both called John Smith, mark one as John Smith Jnr. or add some other kind of unique identifier).
- Drag & drop faces from Unnamed to Named stacks.
- Drag & drop onto name in keyword panel (but only if it’s a Person keyword)
- You can multi-select and name multiple selected faces at the same time.
- Click under the photo and type the person’s name. Auto-complete only shows existing people’s names.
- If Lightroom is confident that several faces are the same person, it groups them together into a stack so you can name them all in one go. Click the stack icon to view the contents of the stack.
- When you’ve named a few faces, Lightroom starts guessing, and you can click the checkmark to confirm the suggested name. If it’s wrong, you can remove the suggestion or just correct it.
- If you’re not sure who a person is, but you expect to find out, you can leave them in Unnamed People section or name them as Unknown so you can easily find them again later.
- If you’ll never find out who a person is, select the face region and press Delete to remove it.
- You can sort the Unnamed People section by Suggested Name, Filmstrip Order, Stack Size or Popular Names.
- Single Person View
- Double-click on a person in the Named People section to go to Single Person view.
- Person View is split into Confirmed and Similar.
- In the Similar section, it displays other faces that might be that person. Click the checkmark to confirm correct guesses.
- Click the People label in the top left corner to go back to People view or click the People icon in the toolbar.
- Loupe View & Draw Face Tool
- Double-click on a person in the Unnamed People section or any face in Single Person view to go to Loupe view.
- The Draw Face tool allows you to manually add Face regions, which is useful when LR isn’t able to detect the face.
- The icon’s found on the Toolbar in Loupe view, and the tool’s automatically selected if you enter Loupe from People view.
- Click and drag to draw a face region. Click the label above to name the person.
- Lightroom stores Faces as special keywords
- You can right-click on existing people keywords and choose Convert Keywords to Person Keywords to convert them.
- It’s worth converting existing name keywords to people keywords before you start face tagging to avoid confusion and duplicates.
- Converting normal keywords to person keywords doesn’t automatically tag the faces with that name, as there may be multiple people in the photo.
- To keep the names organized, right-click on a keyword and select Put New Person Keywords Inside This Keyword to set it as the default parent keyword for all new Person keywords.
- Face tags aren’t affected by your folder hierarchy (hence the need for full and unique names), but you can nest the people keywords inside a family name keyword to keep them organized, or enter their names as Last Name – First Name to list family members together.
- Click the disclosure triangle at the top of the Keyword panel to filter the keyword list to show All keywords, People keywords or Other keywords.
- Click the magnifying glass next to the Keyword Filter at the top of the Keyword panel to search for specific types of keywords.
- You can right-click on existing people keywords and choose Convert Keywords to Person Keywords to convert them.
- You’re in control of the privacy settings
- The indexing is done on your computer – the information is not sent to the cloud.
- The Export dialog includes a Remove Person Info checkbox which prevents the person keywords from being included on export.
- If Remove Person Info option is unchecked, the person’s name is included in the keywords and added to the Person Shown field of the IPTC metadata.
- There are lots of new keyboard shortcuts to remember:
- O toggles the People view.
- With text field inactive:
- Shift+O activates text field.
- Arrows to navigate.
- Delete key in People view will delete the selected Face region.
- S expands or collapses a selected stack in People view.
- With text field active:
- Tab goes to next photo, Shift-tab for previous.
- Enter to confirm and move to next photo.
- Delete key deletes name.
- Escape to stop editing.
- Either:
- Confirm the suggested name by using Shift + Enter.
- Hold down the Option/Alt key and scroll the mouse over a face stack to see a preview of all the faces in the stack.
Photo Merge for HDR & Panorama
- You can now merge photos into HDR images and panoramas without needing to use other software such as Photoshop.
- This is better than using Photoshop or other software, because the resulting DNG file still has the editing flexibility of the original files, even if they were raw files.
- To use both merge options:
- You’ll find the commands under the Photo menu or right-click menu > Photo Merge > Merge to HDR or Merge to Panorama.
- Images need to be the same kind of image (raw vs. rendered) and all shot on the same camera.
- There are new presets in the Filter Presets pop-up, but they search for -Pano or -HDR which Lightroom automatically adds to the name, so be careful not to rename the files!
- If you’ve already edited the active photo, some of the settings are copied to the merged photo, but it’s easier to merge first and edit later.
- Merge to HDR
- Many photographers use the term HDR to describe a specific surreal style of editing, but think about the letters HDR… they stand for high dynamic range.
- There are two stages to the process:
- Merging multiple source files to create a single image with a much higher dynamic range. The result is an HDR file.
- Manipulating that data to compress it into a lower dynamic range suitable for viewing on a screen or print. The result is a normal photo with a specific style of editing applied.
- Most HDR software combines these two steps, allowing you to merge the files into an HDR image, apply your chosen style and output that photo with a low dynamic range.
- Lightroom splits this process into its separate stages, first merging the photos into an HDR image, and then tone-mapping this image in the Develop module before outputting the photo.
- This allows you to go back and change the look of the photo non-destructively at a later date without having to merge the original images all over again.
- As a result, there are only a few controls:
- Auto Align is worth turning on if you shot the images handheld.
- Deghost (None, Low, Medium, High) controls how carefully it looks for movement.
- Show Overlay shows which areas are being affected by the deghosting.
- Tip – You’ll get the best result with the fewest images – one for the highlights and one for the shadows. Lightroom’s method doesn’t need the images in between, and using more images increases the risk of ghosting.
- Tip – Don’t bother to use it on a single photo to make a ‘fake HDR’ as you won’t gain anything.
- The resulting files are 16-bit floating point DNG files, which can easily hold the full HDR contrast range.
- When you open the resulting image in the Develop module, the slider range is extended.
- Merge to Panorama
- Lightroom matches the photos up virtually, so you can even do multi-row panoramas to stitch a huge photo.
- Lens corrections and CA are applied automatically if a suitable profile is available.
- You can choose the method used for the merge:
- Auto – Automatically chooses between Perspective, Cylindrical and Spherical layout.
- Perspective – Designates the middle image as the reference image. The other images are transformed so that the overlapping content across the images is matched.
- Cylindrical – Reduces the “bow-tie” distortion that can occur with the Perspective layout by displaying individual images as on an unfolded cylinder. Overlapping content across files is still matched. The reference image is placed at the center. Best suited for creating wide panoramas.
- Spherical – Aligns and transforms the images as if they were for mapping the inside of a sphere. If you have taken a set of images that cover 360 degrees, use this for 360 degree panoramas. You might also use Spherical to produce nice panoramic results with other file sets.
- Tip – you’ll get the best result by allowing enough overlap when shooting and setting manual exposure.
- The resulting file can be no bigger than 512mp or 65000 px along the longest edge, whichever is smaller.
- There are keyboard shortcuts:
- Merge to HDR – Ctrl-H (on both OS)
- Merge to HDR without the dialog – Ctrl-Shift-H (on both OS)
- Merge to Panorama – Ctrl-M (on both OS)
- Merge to Panorama without the dialog – Ctrl-Shift-M (on both OS)
- Show/Hide the HDR Deghost Overlay – O
- Cycle Overlay Colors – Shift-O
GPU acceleration for interactive image editing
- Lightroom can use the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to speed up interactive image editing. This provides real-time or near-time updates to the image while making adjustments in the Develop module using sliders.
- The GPU is particularly helpful when using high-resolution screens, such as 4K and 5K displays.
- Requirements
- You need to be running Windows 7 or later, or Mac OS 10.9 or later. (Note that LR CC/6 can run on Mac 10.8, but without GPU accelaration)
- The card needs to support Open GL 3.3 or later, which includes most cards from about 2010/2011 onwards.
- It doesn’t need a top-spec graphics card. If you’re buying a new one, a recent mid-range graphics card with 2GB of RAM is a great choice.
- You need to be running recent drivers, especially if you have problems. Windows Update often suggests outdated drivers – check the card manufacturer’s website instead.
- There are pros and cons:
- Interactive Performance – The biggest benefit is interactive performance in the Develop module. The preview updates much faster as you move the sliders, and tools such as the adjustment brush move much more smoothly.
- High resolution screens – The higher the resolution of the screen, the greater the improvement, so it makes a world of difference on a 4K or 5K display.
- Slower loading times – The biggest downside is it takes a little extra time to pass the data from the CPU to the GPU, so there’s a slight delay in initially the loading the photo.
- Intermittent blurring – When you zoom in, it briefly switches to a lower resolution preview before sharpening up again, which can be slightly off-putting.
- Slower Detail adjustments – The preview for sharpening, noise reduction and grain is slightly slower to update.
- Second screen lag – If you work with the Lightroom’s secondary windows open, the lag in updating is more noticeable with the GPU enabled.
- Buggy drivers – Some graphics drivers are buggy and may even crash Lightroom with the GPU enabled, so it’s important to check the manufacturer’s website and install the latest drivers. Some graphics cards have the GPU setting disabled automatically as the drivers are too unstable or the card specification is too low.
- GPU support is enabled by default, and Lightroom automatically determines whether the system’s GPU can be used to accelerate image drawing. If it can, Lightroom displays the name of your graphics card below the checkbox in Preferences. To disable it, go to the new Performance tab in Lightroom’s preferences, and uncheck the Use Graphics Processor checkbox.
Import
- Import to a Collection
- You can now add photos to an existing collection or create a new collection in the Import or Tethering dialog, which is particularly useful for syncing to LR mobile.
- Tethering
- When shooting tethered, Lightroom now warns you if the camera battery is low, or if the camera card is full.
- Activity Center
- There’s a new Activity Center – click on the ID plate to access it.
- Current Tasks – shows progress bars individually, and allows any of them to be canceled.
- Background Operations – Sync to LR mobile, Face Recognition Indexing and Address Lookup (Reverse Geocoding).
- The Activity Center shows the progress of background tasks.
- You can pause/unpause them (perhaps because they’re slowing down the computer when you’re in a hurry).
- Right-click on the ID Plate to show these on the ID Plate too. Sync shows by default.
Library Module
- Backup
- Catalog backups are now zipped, saving space and avoiding accidentally opening a backup.
- Backups are now faster than before.
- You can now change the Backup Frequency in the backup dialog.
- Collections Filter
- The Collection list can now be filtered in the same way that the Keyword list can be filtered.
- To access, click the “+” in the header of the Collections panel, and turn on Show Collection Filter”.
- Keyword Painter
- Easily load the Painter tool with keywords from your Keyword Sets without having to type them.
- With the Painter tool selected and set to Keywords, hold down Shift to show the Keyword Painter.
- Click on the keywords in the Keyword Painter or hold Shift and Alt while pressing the keyword number to add them to the Painter tool.
- Click on Select All to load the whole set or Clear to remove them all.
- Previews
- There’s a new standard preview size in Catalog Settings called Auto, which automatically calculates the right size previews for your monitor.
- It’s enabled by default on new catalogs. Existing catalogs aren’t changed, but can be updated in Catalog Settings.
- The Auto size previews may be bigger than the ones you’ve been using, so may be a bit slower to build and take up more space.
- Quick Develop
- You can adjust in smaller increments by holding down the Shift key while clicking the inner buttons in Quick Develop.
- Metadata
- Flag and Rating categories have been added to the Metadata filters.
- Camera + Lens and Camera + Lens Setting have been added to the Loupe Info options in the View Options dialog.
- The Camera metadata has been tidied up in the Info overlay, for example, it previously said “OLYMPUS IMAGING CORP. E-M5” and now says “Olympus E-M5” followed by the serial number.
Map Module
- Lots of changes behind the scenes to improve performance and stability.
- If you drop a photo onto the map, it now adds altitude as well as longitude/latitude.
- Reverse Geocoding has been renamed Address Lookup.
Develop Module
- Pet Eye
- Like the Red Eye tool for people, the Pet Eye tool corrects unnatural looking eyes in animals.
- In addition to darkening bright/colored spots, it can also add a synthetic catch light.
- Graduated & Radial Filters
- You can now show Mask Overlays (e.g., red overlay) on Graduated Filters and Radial Filters.
- Filter Brush for Graduated & Radial Filters
- Previously introduced in ACR 8, you can now add to and remove from gradient or radial masks using a brush.
- Use Shift+T to toggle between filter edit mode and brush mode, or click Brush at the top of the Brush Options panel.
- Adjustment Brush
- Adjustment Brush strokes can now be repositioned by selecting and dragging Edit Pins. To revert to the previous behavior (to make adjustments to the brush’s develop adjustments) by holding Alt (Windows) / Opt (Mac) while you drag up or down.
- Draw a straight brush line by holding down Shift while clicking on the start and end points. The radius, flow, opacity and feather values are tweened between the starting and ending dot if you set them to different values.
- Spot Healing
- Spot Healing blending has improved for new spots. It doesn’t affect existing spots.
- Crop
- There’s a new Auto button in the Crop Options, which automatically levels titled horizons. You can also Shift-double-click on the “Angle” slider label.
- Lens Corrections Updates
- Lens correction panel now indicates if a photo has built-in lens correction applied. This is useful for particularly micro 4/3s and mirrorless lenses which can be automatically adjusted using opcodes.
- The built-in corrections could be any combination of geometric distortion, chromatic aberration and vignette corrections performed on the camera. If you click on the message, it tells you exactly what’s being applied.
- Soft-Proofing
- CMYK profiles can now be used for soft-proofing (but you still export as RGB).
- Other minor Develop changes
- Develop presets are no longer available in the right-click menu (due to the large number of presets some people use).
- Snapshots are now available in the right-click menu.
- History States no longer slow down Develop loading speed.
Book
- In the Book module, photo text metadata settings will now be saved with custom pages.
Slideshow
- Pan & Zoom – Ken Burns Effect
- You can now add a pan & zoom effect to your slideshows, also known as a Ken Burns effect.
- You can change the amount of movement.
- Music Multiple Audio Tracks & Sync Timings
- Audio settings have now moved to their own Music panel.
- You can add up to 10 music tracks to your slideshow.
- You can sync the slide transitions to the music, so it intelligently changes the fade time based on the music beats.
- Aspect Ratio Preview
- Slideshows can now be previewed at your screen aspect ratio as before, or they can be previewed at your intended output aspect ratio (either 16×9 or 4×3).
- Preview Quality
- You can pick the preview quality, depending on quickly you need to start the playback.
- Export is always done at full quality.
- Other minor UI changes
- There’s a new Music panel and the Playback panel has been rearranged.
- Manual vs. automatic slideshow are now buttons instead of a checkbox.
- Slides slider now called Slide Length.
- Fades slider now called Crossfades.
- Repeat now called Repeat Slideshow.
Web
- Lots of changes behind the scenes to improve performance and stability.
- Flash galleries are dead and buried.
- There are 3 new responsive HTML 5 galleries (Grid, Square and Track), which means they work well with mobile web browsers as well as desktop browsers.
- Classic Gallery is the old Lightroom HMTL Gallery, which remains for legacy reasons but isn’t responsive.
Export
- Percentage options have been added to the image resizing section of the Export dialog.
- The email shortcut on Windows has been removed (and reused for Merge to Panorama).
- Publish Services – There’s a long awaited bug fix, which stops photos being incorrectly marked as Modified when you haven’t changed them. You might need to update problem photos one more time.
Preferences
- Separate Startup Prefs
- A few essential preferences have been moved to a separate Startup Preferences files. It remembers the last used catalog path, the recent catalog list, which catalog to load on startup and the catalog upgrade history.
- On both Windows and Mac, the new startup preference file is located here: (App Data)/Preferences/Lightroom 6 Startup Preferences.agpref
- Reset Preferences
- No more hunting through hidden files to reset preferences! Just hold down Alt-Shift (Windows) / Option-Shift (Mac) while starting Lightroom, and it’ll ask whether to reset the preferences.
- Resetting preferences at launch only clears user preferences, not startup preferences.
- High DPI
- Added 250% option to the Windows UI scaling preference.
- Thumbnail Badges
- There is now a preference to make badges in the filmstrip ignore clicks. It’s found in the Filmstrip section of the Interface tab of the Preferences.
- Background
- Removed the “Pinstripe” texture option and replaced it with a new “Darker Gray” option under Background colors.
- Removed the drop shadow behind the before/after views when GPU is enabled.
- Catalog & Preview Corruption
- There’s better error reporting in the extremely unlikely event of catalog corruption.
- Preview corruption is now fixed automatically. Just quit and restart if it tells you the preview cache is corrupted.
Other Performance Improvements
- Import
- Convert to DNG on import is now a separate background task that runs after import. It copies the raw files as fast as possible so you can start work, then converts in the background.
- Import speed on Mac is now on par with manually copying files to a folder in Finder and then adding to Lightroom.
- Thumbnail loading performance is improved after an Import.
- It now does Smart Preview Generation, Convert to DNG and Face Detection Indexing (if enabled) in one go to improve speed.
- Export
- Export speed has been improved, and it makes better use of multiple cores so you don’t have to manually queue up multiple exports.
- Library
- Moving photos to a different folder is faster than in Lightroom 5.
- Map
- Map loads more quickly when there are thousands of pins.
- Develop
- History panel load time is improved when there’s a long list of history states for the photo.
- Image switching time is reduced when working with a large list of Develop presets (if GPU is off).
- GPU acceleration for interactive image editing (see separate listing).
Installation
- System Requirements
- The system requirements are the same as Lightroom 5, with a couple of exceptions:
- No more 32-bit operating systems – it’s 64-bit only now.
- Mac 10.8 or later (10.9 or later for GPU support).
- OpenGL 3.3 (and DirectX 10 for Windows) capable graphics card for GPU related functionality.
- Internet connection is required for activation and internet-based services such as sync.
- New Installer, Adobe ID, Data Capture & Keychain
- On a Mac, the application is now stored inside an Adobe Lightroom folder (like Photoshop).
- An Adobe ID is now required as part of the installation process.
- When you install, it asks for permission to collect information about your workflow so help improve Lightroom. You can find out what they’d collect here: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/desktop-app-usage-information-faq.html
- On a Mac, it may ask for permission to “use your confidential information stored in Adobe Lightroom in your keychain”. You can safely say yes – it’s just asking for access to Lightroom mobile security tokens from Lightroom 5.
- To uninstall, you MUST run the uninstaller. This is usual behavior on Windows, but Mac users will mess things up by just trashing the app.
- Activation
- Lightroom now requires online activation.
- You can have 2 machines activated at a time. If you try to log in on a 3rd machine, it asks if you want to deactivate the other machines remotely, so you don’t have to remember to deactivate or go through a nightmare phone procedure to unlock it.
- Upgrade Process
- Lightroom CC/6 upgrades your catalog format. The upgraded catalog is not backwards compatible for earlier LR versions.
- Unlike previous releases, Lightroom no longer offers to change the name/destination during upgrade, but you can change it in Explorer/Finder once you’ve closed LR.
Support for Touch-enabled PCs
- If you have a touch-enabled PC (e.g., Microsoft Surface Pro 3), you can switch to the Touch workspace from anywhere in the app by clicking the Touch icon (only available on touch-enabled devices).
- This shows all of the same controls that are available in Lightroom mobile, plus capabilities like access to your User Created Presets and local corrections.
- Other improvements include the ability to scroll through panels, filmstrip, add flags, zoom in/out in loupe and grid.
LR mobile 1.4 iPad
- Updates to the Crop tool focused on usability.
- “Auto Straighten” in crop. This uses Upright/Level to straighten photos by rotating them.
- TIFF support.
LR mobile 1.1 Android
- Support for Android tablets.
- DNG support (for DNG files created on Android devices. You can take DNG photos starting with Android Lollipop).
- microSD card support.
Where’s the book?
It’s coming!! I’ve been working on it for the last 18 months, doing the biggest rewrite I’ve ever done, so I can’t wait for you to see it. I’m just finishing off the final design, so I expect the eBooks to be available in the next couple of weeks, with the paperback (now in color!!!!) following shortly thereafter.
There will be a special bonus for anyone who buys in the first 24 hours, so you’ll want to make sure you’re on the Mailing List to be notified as soon as it’s available. You can sign up here.
Even if you’ve read my previous books, you’re going to want this update. Upgrade discounts will be available for registered book owners as usual. They’ll be sent by email on release day.
Updates for the Lightroom mobile (iPad/Android) books, free Quick Start eBook and Keyboard Shortcuts lists will also be available in the next few weeks… I just need to figure out how to clone myself. Lightroom’s Clone tool doesn’t seem to work for that!
While I’m busy working, you can go and play! Have fun!

Sean Adams says
Seriously frustrated. There are several things causing Lightroom CC to crash!!! For example, I cannot even click on preferences with it crashing. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling, resetting preferences, changing my numbers format, etc. Nothing has worked!! Any suggestions??
JeanLuc LaBarre says
Sean. Sorry to say there is no solution to this or most CC issues.
Look over the forums; many problems, few resolutions.
I tried CC for one month, gave it a fair shake… and went right back to Lr 4.4.
Recommend you do the same.
For me CC confirms what I suspected: This long list of ‘updates’ amounts to a big pile of nothing whatsoever.
1. Lr CC is slower than Lr 4, which was already hopeless. So much for tying in the GPU. Lightroom is by far the clunkiest and least responsive apps I have ever used.
2. The paltry list of actually usable new features in CC (even skipping version 5) is too small to warrant upgrading.
3. The woefully depressing UI and awkward module ‘workflow’ remains totally unchanged. Develop modules and other elements still cannot be moved or reordered.
4. STILL no keyboard shortcuts, so grabbing tiny little buttons and dragging them gingerly left or right is still the carpel tunnel nightmare it has always been.
Adobe is pushing CC simply to lock clients in and competitors out, guarantee a reliable revenue stream and avoid the need for costly development.
In short, Adobe has zero incentive to do anything but push out minimal updates. This should be pretty obvious by now! Apple threw in the towel with Aperture and the rest are similarly doomed to obscurity. Ah, but there is Capture One…..
Victoria Bampton says
There have been a fair few teething problems with this release, that’s for sure. I have to disagree about their incentive for improvements though – on the contrary, they have far MORE reason to keep working on it now, as the competition is getting better with every passing month. Which new features were you hoping to see? Have you posted them at the Official Feature Request Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family?
Victoria Bampton says
That sounds incredibly frustrating Sean. Your system specs would help – almost all crashes have been related to buggy graphics card drivers. Post it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family as some of the engineers hang out there too.

I just upgraded to (osx) Lightroom CC and imported my library from L5.6. I noticed right away that the screen colour is different (e.g. photos are less contrasty in L CC), I use adobe rgb 1998 on both versions. Thanks in advance for your help.
Victoria Bampton says
How are you calibrating your monitor Bob? There shouldn’t be any difference. Try it with the Enable Graphics Processor checkbox checked and unchecked in Preferences > Performance to see if there’s any difference.

Is there any way to enable downloading of images from the new Grid web gallery?
With the unresponsive Classic gallery, someone can right click on an image and download it.
But with the Grid gallery, that doesn’t seem possible.
I am looking for a way to share a bunch of photos with a group of friends with whom I went on vacation. I want them to be able to download any of the images that they want.
Is there a better way than creating a gallery? Or is there a way to enable downloads?
thanks.
Victoria Bampton says
Not through the default galleries, but the ones from http://theturninggate.net can do downloads. Alternatively, if you have a CC subscription, you can do a shared gallery through there that allows downloads.

This update has completely killed my computer. I can’t run Lightroom and any other software at the same time. Half the time, I can’t even run Lightoom. I’ve never had a problem with previous versions. I’ve been trying to shut down Lightroom for the last 2 hours – it’s still trying to back up my database and the computer is completely unusable while it’s doing so. Trying to move the mouse to click on something isn’t possible – it jumps around the screen at unpredictable rates. Lightroom keeps launching new little windows that show on my task bar and steal the computer’s focus from what I’m trying to do. Is anyone else experiencing issues like this? I’m at my wits end. I have an assignment I need to process images for and have lost sleep trying to get them done for 2 days now – this would have taken me a few hours to do at most with the old version. (I tried to read through the comments here to see if anyone has mentioned this, but the screen keeps jumping around. It’s taken me 30 minutes to try and type this up as Lightroom keeps stealing focus away from the browser window. I’m going mad!)
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Miri. Sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Something certainly sounds very odd. I’d suggest reporting the issues you’re having at the the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family) where the engineers will see it.

Background:
I’ve been using LR 2.7 on an XP machine for years. Please don’t laugh. Well, the XP machine is now officially dead. So I’m going to upgrade to LR 6 and install it on my brand new Mac Mini.
Question:
Can I use your free Lightroom 5 Quick Start eBook to get me started? Or do I need to buy a new book specifically for LR 6? In other words, has all the new v.6 functionality you discuss above simply been added to the basic functionality and user interface of v.5x?
Victoria Bampton says
Everything in the LR5 Quick Start applies to LR6 too, apart from the installation procedure (which depends on whether you’re installing the trial, a CC subscription license or a perpetual license). I will be doing an LR6 Quick Start update along with my main LR6 book, but that’ll get you going in the meantime.
Bruce says
Thanks. You da Queen!

Hi there,
Inquiring if anyone uses ShuttlePRO v2 for editing with LR. I have purchased some macros from Jared Platt to automate culling and it worked perfectly in LR5. Once I upgraded to CC I have issue with selecting 6images in survey mode and moving on. I have spoke to Contour (shuttle) and they noted its not them, rather adobe might of changed keyboard shortcuts used in macro. Does anyone else have similar issue and/or know which keyboard shortcuts have changed? Thank you! PS. Here is a screen grab of the macro https://www.dropbox.com/s/8joxven9r0j3bc9/Screenshot%202015-05-13%2001.09.15.png?dl=0
Victoria Bampton says
Interesting macro. None of those shortcuts have changed, although I guess there could be a timing issue. You can manually do each of those actions in turn to confirm that those shortcuts still work. Since you bought the macros from Jared, have you considered emailing him?
Mark says
Thanks Victoria,
I have emailed and tweeted him… haven’t heard back yet
Will advise if I figure it out
Cheers

I’m having the freezing problem when the splash screen starts and I have the stand alone version of 6 so there’s no signing in and out of CC to make it work. Is there any use in uninstalling and reinstalling? When I reinstall, will Adobe count that as my second computer since I couldn’t get into the program to sign out (can’t remember the technical term for telling Adobe you aren’t going to be using it on this computer)?
Hope someone can help. I have put in hours of correcting a keyword mess.
Thank you. (Hope I’m not posting this twice. It didn’t seem to work the first time.)
Peg Ransom says
I reinstalled my lightroom 6 update and it worked. Until I shut down, then the screen started freezing again. I repeated the reinstall three times and the third time it now restarts after I shut down. Hopefully it lasts.
(In case anyone else needs to try this fix.)

That’s a strange one… thanks for sharing.

I’ve never been able to import my Aperture library, just hangs. Does this update work any better or is the issue likely with my aperture library itself. All media is off-line on DVD’s.
Victoria Bampton says
I don’t think it’s changed Dave. Some people have reported better luck by splitting their library up into smaller chunks and then running the plug-in on each chunk. Others have done better with the alternative Aperture Exporter standalone app.
David says
This is a great article and question session on the LR6 vs LRCC transition. I have a probably stupid question on Panorama and maybe HDR in LR6.
Does it work on Panorama sequences in JPG? Yes, I wil be working in RAW from now on but I have old jpeg’s I want to merge.
Victoria Bampton says
Yep, it’ll work on JPEGs too – it just works a lot better on raw files. If the JPEGs were shot on manual, they should merge ok, but they might not blend quite so well if there’s a variation between the files. Give it a try!
David says
Thanks Victoria. You. ARE. The BEST. What time is it there anyway? 1:40 am?
Yes they were shot fully manual. Including white balance. I did know that much when I shot them in anticipation of LR one day including my most wanted feature. And I do like the idea of LR returning fully editable RAW files for my future panos.

Vuctoria, I wonder if you or anyone in the Adobe circle are aware if thus issue, which clearly slipped through the beta testing: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom-6-invalid-xmp-metadata-written-to-exported-jpegs-tripping-up-reading-software?rfm=1)
In a nutshell, LR CC/6 is writing incorrect metadata to exported files which have had some reasonably heavy local develop adjustments applied. This is easily reproducible and wasn’t present in previous versions of LR. I know there are quite a few bugs stacking up, but this is a real clanger IMO, and one which can really mess up some user’s workflows.
Victoria Bampton says
I’m watching… I’ll download the files tomorrow and drop it into the internal bugbase if no one’s done so in the meantime.

Thanks Victoria (and apologies for miss-typing your name: the dangers of typing on smart phones!).

I currently have LR 5.7 and am also a PhotographerCC member. (Mac Air 1 year old) Lr Cc will not download from the CC app. I contacted Adobe and they told me to uninstall LR 5 and then download LR cc.
Question is this the way to go? And will my catalog on my computer get deleted when I uninstall LR5?
I do have a back up, (removable hard drive) but I have never had to use it and I am very uneasy to say the least.
Thank you
Eric
Victoria Bampton says
It’s an unusual suggestion… trying to put it kindly. It’s not immediately obvious to me why they’d suggest that. But your catalog shouldn’t be affected by an uninstall. If you’re concerned, go to Catalog Settings to find out where your catalog’s stored, and then manually create a duplicate somewhere. I can easily help you restore from that, if some kind of weird disaster happened.
When you say it won’t download, are you getting an error message? The best place to check out installation problems is the the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family)
Steve Crane says
I’m enjoying the new merge features and have already made a few panoramas. I was wondering though, considering that the merged file is a DNG containing all the raw data, is there going to be any reason to keep the individual raw or DNG files that the merge was made from? Is there any prevailing opinion on this yet.
One might want to keep them if you think you will want to re-merge with another app or a later version of Lightroom, but I’m happy with the merge that LR CC 2015 is doing so don’t see a need for that. Unless there is some compelling reason to keep them, one could save a considerable amount of disk space by keeping only the final merged DNG file. In one example I have 7 16megapixel DNG files converted from Fujifilm X-E1 raw files that total 144MB while the merged DNG is 156MB. Is there really a need to keep both?
The answer may differ for HDR Merge where indicidual images may have more use later on that segments of a panorama do.
Ian says
I would keep them. One of the first things I am going to do once I have Lr6 sorted out is redo a variety of panos and HRD images to see what it can do. If I had deleted those unneeded files last time I could not do that. My 1Tb drive with 40k images on it still has room. If I start to run low I will just spend a few $ on a new bigger drive. That will not cost me much more than a Lr upgrade.
Steve Crane says
As I have plenty of disk space I’ll be keeping mine too. Was really just wondering what other’s thoughts were. The ability to stack them behind the merged image in LR means they don’t really clutter up your catalogue.
Victoria Bampton says
I’d keep them, at least for now. This is early days for the merge feature, so I have no doubt it’ll get better and better in future. You might want to redo the merge in future.
Abdo Abdala says
Yes there is. For this sequence can be separated. You may want a single shot, cut may represent loss.
I still preserve My RAW, NEF, along with the DNG because the LR is still lacking in color conversions, especially in very blue skies.
Thanks
Judy Brown says
So this means once you go to LR CC, you’ll have a catalog that you can only read in LR CC. So if you ever can’t afford to continue your CC subscription, you LOSE all LR edits made from the time you started with LR CC. Pretty daunting. I have CC for photographers, but don’t think I’ll be upgrading even tho it would be included.
Victoria Bampton says
No! In July 2014, Adobe announced a big change. If your trial or subscription expires, most of Lightroom continues working. Only the Develop module, Map module and Sync stop working, so you can still access and output all of the work you’ve already done. Here’s the full blurb: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/cancel-cc-subscription-youll-lose-work-will/
Jeff says
Is there a possibility to turn off the zipping of backups? I use another tool for backups which is taking all the backups, doing deduplication on all of them and backing up only the small changes. So if in LR5 I assigned a single keyword to a photo, the change would result in really small backup compared with the zipped version.
Victoria Bampton says
Not that I know of, sorry Jeff. But you could get your tool to simply copy the main catalog when LR’s closed – you’d get the same result.
John Coveney says
How do I control where in my existing keyword hierarchy the new People Keywords go? With ordinary keywords if I want to tag my new friend Joe Bloggs (not sure if he writes in the internet!!) , I can simply type Friends > Joe Blogs in the add keywords box and his keyword appears where I want it in People>Friends>Joe Blogs. Friends also auto completes which confirms that I’ve got the category name right. New People Keywords seem to go into random groups? Thanks John C
PS The confirm follow emails are not working.
Victoria Bampton says
You can’t use > in the Faces keywords. Debatable whether that’s a bug or not, but I’m sure I’ve seen it posted as such. Once you’ve added them to the right place in the hierarchy once, of course, they remain there.
(You mean the Notify me of follow-up comments by email is broken?)
John Coveney says
Thanks Victoria for all that. It now seems to me that new People Keywords jump into the last category I used in the traditional keys – but I’ll report back when I’ve had a chance to check it out more . Overall, I think Adobe need to provide a little more integration/options between traditional and people keywords.
Re the followup comments – certainly the link didn’t seem to work in Outlook and I’ve not had problems previously with this type of link from other sources. And I didn’t get any notifications of the later posts to the thread. Whether its something at my end or yours – who knows? It’s no big deal for me but it may be useful to you to know what happened. Thanks John C
Victoria Bampton says
It’d love to hear what you find out on the hierarchy. In theory, the right-click > Place New Person Keywords Inside this Keyword should work, but what you’ve described is sounding a bit buggy – and I think I saw John Ellis post something very similar on the Bug Report forum.
Thanks for the info on the follow up comments – I’ll check into that. Very helpful indeed!
John Coveney says
Hi Victoria, thanks as always for your LR info. I’m confused on how facial recognition keywords integrate with my existing people keywords – the name boxes under the faces don’t auto complete when I start typing an existing people tag? Someone mentioned a guide to this in the comments above but I can’t see it. It wd be great if you could post a link – or perhaps we need to wait for your book.
Thanks, John C
John Coveney says
OK, it auto complete’s one you have applied a people keyword once – but why not the first time, especially if the keyword is already associated with the file?
John C
Victoria Bampton says
That’s why you’re best to right-click > Convert to Person Keyword first.

I have been working with Lightroom 5.7 on my pc but have just purchased a MacBook pro. I am going to be signing up for the Lightroom CC. Would you suggest I install my Lightroom 5.7 onto my Mac first and then upgrade to Lightroom CC? Or should I just start off with the Lightoom CC on the new MacBook? I want to insure that I will have my current catalog back up in the newLightroom CC. Just not sure which would be the best and easiest way to get all of my info switched over to the new MacBook as well as the latest Lightroom. I am not sure if it would make a difference.
Victoria Bampton says
I’d usually recommend doing a cross-platform move in two steps – the move and then the upgrade or vice versa. There are step by step instructions here: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-move-lightroom-to-new-computer/
Julie Swanson says
Great! Thanks. I will check out that link. I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge.

Thank you for another great article. It always amazes me how you find the time to do everything. Phew!
Anyway, I have multiple copies of Photoshop CC appearing in my CC app. They are: Adobe Photoshop CC (2014) (version 15.2.2) and Adobe Photoshop CC (version 14.2.1). I presume the versions numbers relate to the year/ month/version or year/month/day. So i should remove the 2014 (14.2.1) version presumably.
Regarding LR6/CC I had no issues apart from the log out and in deal.
Cheers from a cool New Zealand
Victoria Bampton says
I seem to have given up sleeping! 🙂 Yes, I’d just keep the 15.2.2 version. If there are any problems, you can always reinstall.
Abdo Abdala says
I would like to understand, because the adobe until today did not correct a problem:
when export tiff in DNG format, the icon in the finder is not possible to view. (Mac)
I’m sorry for english … thanks Abdo from Brazil
Victoria Bampton says
Sadly that’s an Apple bug, not an Adobe one. Apple need to read the preview correctly.
Thomas Gülden says
Hi Victoria
I think since version 3, I enjoyed your Missing FAQ books. You were always a good source for problem solving!
I really appreciated the introduction of Lightroom Mobile, and it was one reason to sign up for a CC subscription. I was hoping to find with Lightroom Mobile a good solution to import, view, and manage my RAW images on my iPad, when I travel. However, I was quite disappointed to see that Lightroom Mobile cannot handle RAW files directly from the iPad camera roll and albums, although the simple Photo app can do this (via the embedded JPEGs). Instead you can add RAW images only via synchronization with your local image catalog via the smart previews, which is of course not an option with new photos taken during travel and which you want to backup and view on your tablet.
Note that I am not interested in image editing while on travel, so that Lightroom Mobile is for me on the wrong track. I also don’t want to shoot RAW + JPEG.
So, is there any solution to this? Can you elaborate, why Adobe still choose not to offer proper RAW support, even if you would not be able to edit the images? Adobe is so close to a very good solution for the mobile RAW shooter, but it still fails to jump over the last step.
I had expected that the aforementioned shortcomings would be solved with Lightroom CC / mobile.
Best regards
Thomas
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Thomas. It’s just not their vision for the app at the moment, apparently. I’d like it too. But they’d really need to add Wifi sync before that was a really viable workflow, and we probably need bigger iPad storage before it becomes truly helpful to most of the people who would use it. In the meantime, Photosmith has a pretty good workflow for raw upload.

Selecting the white balance eyedropper only allows one pick, not repetitice samplings.
You have to choose it again to take another sample.
Keyboard shortcut “W” helps get you through that one.

Hi Victoria
I found the new LR CC very buggy. Sometimes the right-hand panel or many menu commands are grey out. Once, I marked a photo as reject and LR marked another photo! And deleted the photo LR wanted to delete, not the one I wanted! The problems were solved after I restarted LR, but I shouldn’t need to restart a professional-grade software several times during the day. I look forward to the first patch.
Victoria Bampton says
That sounds very odd Magno. Make sure you report the issues at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family) as I haven’t seen any of those problems and I’ve been working on it for nearly a year.

Hi Victoria, I’m getting a flash of black as I switch between before and after in the Develop Module. Is anyone else having this issue or am I doing something wrong?
Victoria Bampton says
I am hearing a few other reports like that. Switching off the GPU seems to solve it for most people, until they can find a fix. Also make sure you have updated graphics card drivers direct from the manufacturer.

One thing we have noticed after upgrading from 5 to 6 (CC on Windows 7) was incorrect colour when printing. We found that the colour profile settings on all our print templates had been reverted to “Managed by Printer”. We have about 40 print templates with custom print profiles (for specific types of paper/printer) and we’ve had to go through and re-configure all of these manually.
Has anyone else noticed this after upgrading their catalog to 6?

Michael from Aix en Provence says
Hello,
I’ve read the mail you’ve sent us.. thanks a lot and waiting for your new LR6/CC book coming soon.
My question is more oriented to a fact which is probably an issue on Adobe’s side and especially concerning installation and use of LR6/LR CC. Some confusing things are emerging here and perhaps I will not be the only one..?
So, currently I own a CC 2015 Photography subscription. The two authorized “licenses to use” are still occupied on two partitions (one on a standard OS X 10.8 work and production and another on Yosemite just for testing purposes). Furthermore I wanted to upgrade my LR5 license to LR6. Goal is to use this application on a laptop where LR is greatly sufficient for first adjustments. I will never need and use PS CC on this kind of PC (MacBookPro) and I’m not sure today I will continue in the future with CC 2015, simply because I don’t use PS CC very often. Additionally “Switching licenses on and off” is not what I daily want to do.
Problem is : as you try to install the upgrade, you’ll be asked for your Adobe ID and of course, if you bought this upgrade, for the related serial number.. until here, it’s all fine. But when you’ve finished the installation, you got LR CC and NOT LR6 ! When you launch LR6 (you think it’s the right one because you’ve downloaded and installed the right file from Adobe’s store) You have to de-activate one of the two CC 2015 licenses… what is of course completely crazy !
The only way I’ve have found to avoid this behaviour is to create another Adobe ID which is NOT related to a CC subscription. But I still have LR CC and not LR6..
NB : I’m sorry for this long explanation but this curious case is not simple to explain to be finally clear enough.
My issue has been posted to Adobe’s service and I’m waiting for a clear answer in a few days, I suppose..
Adobe is clearly trying to push users to the CC subscription program.. and forget the promise made by R&D manager two years ago : “LR will be always delivered as a standalone application..”. This just to underline Laura Shoe’s writing about LR6/CC and link you gave.
Try to find a LR6 standalone trial.. good luck !! You get LR CC which is the same, but after first month you’re invited to subscribe a CC program.
“HDR” LR6 feature is really amazing ! The good thing is that you get a DNG file where you can possibly do some additional precise adjustments.
Cheers to all.
Victoria Bampton says
Yes, I know the Adobe ID limits is a crazy situation. It’s not limited to Lightroom – you can only have one subscription per account too. It’s one I’ve complained about quite vocally, but it’s the CC engineering team who need to figure out that one.
Per Berntsen says
Victoria, I have one (undocumented?) new feature to add to your list.
In Develop, images are no longer displayed with a drop shadow, as long as Use Graphics Processor is checked. This is great news for those of us who work with a white background.
In previous versions, the workaround was to set up Lights Out with a white background, and press L twice. This may seem like a tiny detail, but for me it’s the most important new feature in LR 6.
Victoria Bampton says
Well spotted Per!
Howard says
Just started my first session of 750 pics took this morn, very slow from my PC took 17 mins.
My question, my old LR3, while in Develop, all pic are converting to DNG, this is in LR6. How do turn this off? thx Howard
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Howard. Top of the import dialog, you must be set to Copy as DNG.

Hi Victoria, Been a while, question, I have LR 5 on my PC. Recently got a Mac Laptop and want to shift my files over from the PC. Can I upgrade directly to the Mac from Adobe or is there something I have to do to make this happen. Sorry if this something I should be asking Adobe!! Thanks for all your help regardless.
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Jim, good to hear from you! You can do the switch in one go, but I’d be inclined to do it as a two-step process just in case something doesn’t work as expected. There’s a link to the full instructions here: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-move-lightroom-to-new-computer/
Syd Lemon says
Hi Victoria,
I paid for and downloaded the upgrade version and it installed as the CC version. I have a serial number emailed to me but I cannot find out where to put it. There is no place that I can see in preferences or help.
The only question the installer asked was did I buy it or was it a trial. I said I bought it and it has installed the CC version. Where can I put my serial no in to get Lightroom 6? I don’t want CC and have no use for the mobile apps or cloud storage. I just want my perpetual licence that I paid for. I am quite annoyed that I paid for Lightroom 6 and have received CC . I could have just done that with my subscription. (I have a subscription which I use for Photoshop which I do not mind being a subscription as it is a bit of a luxury which I could forego if the subscription rises).
So how do I get what I paid for?
Thanks
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Syd. It’s all the same build, whether you license it as the CC or perpetual license. Here’s where to enter your license: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/serialize-lightroom-cc-trial-to-activate-as-lightroom-6.html)
(You do realize that if you’re paying for Photoshop CC, you’d get Lightroom CC subscription included?)
syd lemon says
Thanks Victoria. In the event I opened it this morning and it asked me to license the software and it worked ok. I guess the system just needed time to determine that I had bought the upgrade version. I know I can get it for “free” as part of my subscription but I want the freedom to bail out if they do something I don’t like (such as doubling the subscription). I can do without Photoshop so if they did jack up the price I could bail out without any real loss. I subscribe to MS Office because there are plenty of tools to use and modify my work if Microsoft fails me. In short the subscription is ok but not for products I depend on which would not allow me to work on my data.
Anyway many thanks for your efforts: without them many of us would have given up on Adobe.
Cheers

Hi. Great review, as always. Thank you!
You mention “new presets in the Filter Presets pop-up” for HDR and Pano images. Can you elaborate on this a little? I have no idea where that is and don’t notice anything different in presets.
Thanks
Victoria Bampton says
No problem. Look on the right of the filter bar, either at the top of the Grid view or on the Filmstrip. There are filter presets in that pop-up, including ones to find the HDR and panorama files.

God I hate this bit — Victoria does an absolutely amazing job when these upgrades etc happen, but fast becomes the whipping boy [girl] for Adobes poor customer relations. Alas as she appears to be the only one who sticks their head above the parapet, this becomes the only forum to air our frustrations. So sorry Victoria but….
LR6 appears to simply be a collection of gimmicks. Nothing of substance. Take Panorama’s etc. – most people who needed this already had the industry standards like HDR Pro . Face recognition (whoop de doo) we managed without it all these years and survived, tbh if this is as flaky as the reports seem to suggest then you simply have to got through every picture anyway and ensure LR got it right. Simply do key wording on import. Zipped backups – I simply used WinZip anyway the work of seconds. The Slideshow “improvements” I already invested in ProShow Gold or used Audacity . So what about real improvements like Presets Nesting we have been asking for since LR3 I think.
As for commitment to perpetual licenses … their behaviour this times shows that this is going to get worse over the years as they try and prop up the CC business model. I may well stop at LR5 as LR7 will probably involve climbing to a remote Buddhist monastery in Tibet’s Himalaya mountains, to press a secret button just to get the next clue as to where in the artic the next button is located. Sigh – frustration abounds – Again sorry Victoria nothing personal
Victoria Bampton says
It’s rare I disagree with you John, but on this occasion, I have to disagree on a couple of those points.
Panorama has the advantage of retaining the raw data. That means smoother gradients in skies, etc., and full white balance edibility.
HDR, again, it’s retaining the raw data and non-destructive editing. The result is better for those who want natural looking extended dynamic range photos, but those who like the stylized look will still prefer software like HDR Pro. That’s a matter of taste. Some reviews are misunderstanding the HDR tool, complaining that it doesn’t have sliders and not realizing they’re meant to use the sliders in Develop.
Face Recognition has been the number one request on the feature request site for a long long time, so they had to put it in, but that is primarily desired by amateur photographers. I’ve been using it on my personal (family/friends) catalog for months, and although it’s worth a flip back through to check for ones it missed (in most cases, faces that are too small, or the eyes aren’t both showing or are rotated too far), it’s still saved me a lot of time.
Personally I agree on the Slideshows though – I’m not that excited about those improvements.
The zipped backups will save me SO many headaches – not for my own catalogs but for support. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who accidentally start working in a backup catalog and later delete it without realizing or can’t figure out where their pictures have gone.
The performance improvements (excluding the bugs!) is the biggest selling point for me.
And yes, personally I think they came on too strong pushing CC. But hey, I’ll provide a link to the remote Buddhist monastery again next time if needed!

Has there been some change to the adjustment brush? I use the ‘show selected mask overlay’ feature but with Lightroom 6 it is hardly visible when you make an adjustment. Very very pale pink. With Lightroom 5 it was much more visible. If I go to adjust an existing photo I altered first in Lightoom 5 and open it in Lightroom 6 the mask overlay is much deeper pink but as soon as I brush on more adjustment, what ever I add shows as pale pink.
Victoria Bampton says
No, that hasn’t changed. Could you be using a low flow or density setting? Or a pressure sensitive pen?
Stu says
No the settings are the same as before when I click on existing pin done under Lightroom 5. Using a Wacom pen but have the same issue using the mouse as well. 🙁
Victoria Bampton says
OS? I can only repro on my Wacom but not with the Apple trackpad on my Mac. It’d be worth reporting at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family)
Stu says
Sorry Victoria I don’t have a trackpad to try only the Wacom pen and Wacom mouse. Will have to borrow friends track pad. At least you have reproduced the problem. I thought I was going mad!! 🙂
Stu says
OK I have just posted this on Adobe’s site before I go off cycling to do some visiting to a certain hospital near you. http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom-6-bug-when-using-adjustment-brush-mask-overlay-and-a-wacom-tablet)
Victoria Bampton says
No issue, post it on the bug report site and the engineers will try to repro. Make sure you include your OS, and ideally a screenshot too.
Stu says
Sorry forgot. OS is 10.10.3
Stu says
OK I give up… where is the bug report site as I cannot seem to find it at the moment. 🙂
Victoria Bampton says
You already found it. Our posts just crossed!
Stu says
lol.
Radovan Habá? says
I’ve tested face detection and person keywording, but I’m really disappointed from the fact, that Adobe doesn’t store person keywords in the standard xpm field “Person shown”. I don’t know if it’s feature or bug, but it is sad reality. Without proper “Person shown” handling all face detection is useless…
Victoria Bampton says
It does use that field you export the photos Radovan.
G says
Face recognition… wow – it’s SLOW.
I have upward of 80,000 images in my catalog, predominantly family photo’s which I am in the process or allowing LR6 to recognise. I’ve found a couple of weird things… firstly if you let LR6 do face recognition on your entire catalog (what was I thinking!?) and have the screen on the new People view, then not only is LR6 virtually unusable, but it’s incredibly slow at scanning for faces (I estimated around 8 days)… but if you click back to e.g.: catalog thumbnail view instead, the face recognition works in the background and LR6 suddenly becomes usable again… and oddly the face recognition then speed up drastically (it then completed 60k images in under 18 hours).
Unfortunately once it’s found all the faces (and hence shows you it’s guesses for who is who), the People view is absurdly slow… if I select a bunch of faces to select the tick-mark (so ‘yes: thats the correct face name’) it take several minutes (up to like 15) to actually process them… and during that time LR6 is again unresponsive.
Anyone else seeing this? I’m using a 4GHz iMac 5k with an SSD in it, so expected it to be a tad quicker.
Victoria Bampton says
Having the indexing running does slow it down significantly, but once that’s finished, it should be much better. I’d hit the Pause button in the Activity Center when you need to use the computer and unpause it overnight, then leave tagging until it’s finished.
Oh, also check the speed of the drive where the photos are stored – it’s having to read the original files if you don’t have smart previews built.
G says
I did have smart previews, but given that all my masters are on the same SSD inside the iMac, I deleted them as they wouldn’t have been used (right?… my understanding is LR will use the master if it’s online and only smart previews if the master is offline – which mine never are). The face recognition is two-step… first LR6 looks for any face, second it guesses who that may be based on any names you’ve input already. The first step can tick away in the background so long as you’re not in the People view (where it becomes slower). The second step… confirming the names it’s guessed, is the weird part. What I have found is that LF6 is absurdly slow with face tag operations (on as yet un-confirmed faces) when viewing my entire catalog in one hit (perhaps I was expecting too much). So now I’m going through dated folder views instead, which is hence limiting how many images LR6 is showing for face confirmation to around 7k max… it’s still a little disappointingly slow, but far, far more usable than when showing my entire 80k+ catalog at once.
Victoria Bampton says
In most cases, yes, the smart previews would only be used when the originals are offline. Face Recognition is the only exception I can think of. For Faces, I’d recommend doing smaller chunks at a time anyway. It’s particularly useful to know how old small kids were in the section you’re naming!
Marc Friedland says
I have the Photographer’s Creative Cloud subscription and it supposedly downloaded and installed Lightroom CC (2015). I see on my C:/Programs/Adobe/Lightroom the files for LR 6, but when I click on the Lightroom application file, nothing happens. I uninstalled the Lightroom CC (2015) files from the CC Menu and then re-installed and the same thing happened. Even when I right click and try to Run as Administrator, nothing happens. Whassup?
Victoria Bampton says
Nothing at all Marc? Or you get a flash of the splash screen? Sign out of the CC app (in the CC app preferences) and sign back in. Hopefully that should do the trick. Here are instructions with pictures: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/sign-in-out-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html)
Richard Knight says
This is one of those web pages I’ll have open in a browser tab for weeks. The photo merge features are a big win; keeping the RAW data is so very useful, as it allows me to pursue a more logical editing workflow.
Victoria Bampton says
I’m glad it’s useful Richard!
Dennis Zaebst says
Serious problems with LR 6 download. Adobe accepted my order for the perpetual licensed version, and charged my credit card for $83.74. They sent me an email with my license number for LR6. Then I clicked on the link in the email, found my order #, clicked on it, and the download link was grayed out and not active. The page says the download link is “not applicable”.
So I got in a chat with an Adobe support rep, who advised me to download and install LR CC (2015), then enter my license number. The problem is I don’t want the CC version. I want the perpetual licensed version of LR6.
This is incredibly vexing and frustrating. This despite the fact that it has been over 24 hours since they charged my credit card!
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Dennis. Sorry you’re having trouble. You can go ahead and follow their instructions to install the CC trial. It’s exactly the same build, and the branding automatically changes depending on whether you’re licensed on a subscription or serial number.
Thomas Geist says
Thank you Victoria. Hands down the best summary and explanation on new features in LR CC
I am a bit bummed that although very good where implemented, GPU acceleration is still a bit half hearted (Capture One has GPU support throughout and therefore exports over 3x faster than LR CC on my Mac Pro).
Great explanation on the people keywords! I am not yet clear whether the people specification of a keyword will also show in exported files’ keywords as well as in xmp sidecars. I am away from my computer but I am going to look into this.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks Thomas! This is just the start on the GPU… I’d expect it to expand into further areas in future updates.
Thomas Geist says
I actually found the answer to my own question.
LR CC exports people keywords just as any other keywords PLUS it embeds two more things in the metadata: a tag that defines the keyword as a “Person” keyword as well as the attached Face Region coordinates.
xmp sidecar or embedded, whatever applies
Interestingly LR CC embeds the person names also in the IPTC Extended field “Persons shown” – but only on export. My guess: that’s an oversight.
It’s a sensible move to also use the “Persons shown” field and hopefully Adobe will fix this so that this field will not only be filled on export.
Victoria Bampton says
I think that’s intentional Thomas.
Mike Ormesher says
This has to be one of the most complicated upgrades I have ever seen. Shame on you Adobe, your Customer Service is appealing for customers not even remotely interested in CC which is not just a service but a campaign of mass destruction for Adobe. Your marketing is all wrong and I see many of my colleagues leaving you. Victoria many thanks for trying to make this seamless and sensible but for me I’m out no more Adobe if I can help it. Shame, LR was good before CC and their aggressive marketing prowess. They really need to rethink their strategy.
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Mike. Sorry to hear of your frustration. Yes, I agree they’re hiding the upgrade far too well this time.
HowardDuran says
Hello, I really love LR6, it’s so much faster than my old LR3. I now want to uninstall my old LR3, any special instructions? Thank you!!
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Howard. Nope, just back up as normal. If you run into any problems (more often with plug-ins), you can just reinstall LR6 to fix it.
Amit says
I added images taken on my phone (DNG’s) to an existing collection in LR and found that the images were put in the Photos folder on my OS drive as opposed to a differnt drive where my catalog and all my images live. Also, Lightroom crashed twice on my phone when doing the upload!
Do you know if and where I can tell lightroom to save the files that have uploaded from another device?
Victoria Bampton says
No, you can’t change the default location at this point in time (it’s a frequent request) but you can drag and drop them into your normal folder structure once they’ve uploaded.
Tony Good says
Quick question on syncing to mobile. When I created a new collection it’s synchronised straight away but without selecting the sync check box. When I try to select the check box I can see the sync symbol but it can’t actually select it, or un-select it to stop it syncing. I’ve then tried to select an existing collection and again I can’t actually make the selection ‘stick’ but it has synced the collection anyway and it’s appeared on my phone and iPad. I now just don’t seem to be able to un-sync either of the collections because I can’t make the check box work. Any ideas?
Thanks
Victoria Bampton says
There’s a checkbox in the New Collection/Edit Collection dialog which will work too. I’m not sure why your checkbox won’t work though. That would be worth reporting as a bug at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family)
Tony Good says
Thanks for your reply Victoria, I’ve just restarted LR and it now works! When I uncheck (the previously unchecked box!) it asks me to confirm I want to stop syncing and I can now toggle it on and off at will
🙂
Dave Haynie says
Thanks for the info. I’m a longtime LR user, and pondering the CC photo package. I definitely want the update, CC or paid, for OM-D E-M5II support, as well as other things. Extra speed would be nice, and Adobe has been honing their GPGPU chops on Premiere for a long time, so that sounds fairly promising. The photo stitching seems pretty limited, but as long as it’s more capable than the fairly poor quality stitching in Photoshop CS6, it sure would be nice to be able to do basic compositing without losing the raw file option.
Victoria Bampton says
Oh I’m very jealous you have the E-M5II. I’ve been eyeing up that camera myself! 😉
I’ve been impressed with how well the pano stitching works on raw files. Definitely worth testing out. And if you have a high res monitor, the GPU performance definitely helps.
Alastair says
Quick question; does anyone know if the trial version blocks you from seeing the end results of the panorama feature: can’t find it anywhere
Alastair
Victoria Bampton says
No, it shouldn’t Alastair. Check the same folder that the originals are in. It might be at the end of your sort order. You can also select All Photographs and then pick the Panorama preset from the Filter bar to find it.
Alastair says
Thanks: it eventually turned up: walked away for a few hours (it was doing face recognition and may have been “delayed” by it) and it was there when I returned. Looking forward to the new book
Alastair
Victoria Bampton says
Ah yes, that might have made the computer run slowly too. Glad you’re sorted.
lyle says
Excellent list. No, SUPERB fits it better…
I liked that the backups are now compressed (mine 3:1), the collection filter, ignoring badge clicks and the background processing of multiple exports concurrent with individual editing and other ops. Much better use of CPU cycles.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks Lyle! Completely agree on the zipped backups. I think that feature alone is worth the upgrade for me!
David Bump says
Wonderful info! Thank you! I dove into Face Recognition, and then started wondering how it would interact with my existing keywords for people. This was my first Google hit (and no wonder!), and I started to worry when I read your suggestion about converting existing keywords to people keywords. However, when I looked, Lightroom was already (re-)using my existing keywords for the faces I’d just tagged. Nice!!!
Is there a way to alter which photo is used for the ‘thumbnail’ of a stack in the Named section?
Victoria Bampton says
Unfortunately not. I’d like to do so too, but the answer I was given was the stack only shows the photos of that person in the currently selected folder or collection, and if you picked a ‘top photo’, it might not be included in that source.
Chad Krueger says
Does lightroom CC still only install to your windows (OS, C:, SSD) drive? I see that CC still does not detect that I have LR5 installed (was installed with a perpetual license prior to a frustrating upgrade to CC to try photoshop).
The previous (rejected!) solution was to delete LR from where you installed it, and let CC try to squeeze it onto my already full bood SSD.
I think this might mean I can not install LR CC at all?
Victoria Bampton says
That’s a good question, and since I only have a single drive in my Windows VM’s, I can’t check that for you. Well done posting it on the Bug Report site. What did you find out when you tested the install?
Richard Howard says
Victoria- As always you are so generous with information provided ‘free’ about LR. Everyone should purchase every book you publish. Good karma and the best resource about LR. Didn’t read all of the comments, but did see people having a problem with the CC upgrade. I had some issues and did get good results with Adobe Chat. Here a couple of things that helped. Sign off and sign back in to the CC desktop app. Settings>preferences. LR6 is now called Adobe Lightroom CC-2015. Launch it from the CC App to be sure you are not still on V5. If this has been covered through other comments, sorry for the repeat.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks Richard! Yeah, there have been quite a few people with that problem, but thankfully it’s a fairly painless fix.
Robin says
Thanks so much for your review! It is very helpful, especially since I’m still pretty new to Lightroom. I currently have the standalone LR5 installed on my computer. What are the advantages/disadvantages to updating the standalone software vs switching to the cloud version? And if it is worth going to the cloud version, what will happen to my standalone library? Does it just automatically get uploaded into the cloud? Do I then delete LR5 from my computer?
Victoria Bampton says
It’s essentially just a difference in licensing. You either pay up front for a version that’s basically stuck in time (new camera/lens/bug updates for a while, but that’s about it) vs. you pay monthly and always have the latest versions (including Photoshop and mobile sync).
It phones home every now and again, but even on subscription, you can go up to 99 days without internet access and it still work. (It’ll nag you regularly after 30 days offline).
Nothing else changes. It works the same as it always did. The program file itself is exactly the same, and it runs on your computer as it always has done. Photos are still stored on your computer unless you choose to sync them to mobile.
If you go with the subscription and later decide to stop subscribing, most of Lightroom carries on working. Only the Develop module, Map module and Sync die. They’ve worked hard to make it as risk-free a move as possible, because they want the chance to prove themselves.
And yes, whichever way you go, you can uninstall LR5.
Shaun says
Seems like quite a few changes, many good ones. I’ll be reading this a few times to get my head around it all.
Victoria Bampton says
Yeah, even some of the little changes are big time savers.
John says
Adobe really does not want you to download or use the standalone Lightroom 6. Every link takes you to their CC page and every download is a CC setup file. The direct links no longer work (at least for me – “not authorized”). I have zero interest in renting software and believe that I’m done with Adobe and Lightroom. They sure made that easy!
Victoria Bampton says
It’s all the same build now John. It’s just branded as CC when it’s licensed as a subscription or in a trial mode. When you enter the serial number into the CC trial, it’s a normal standalone build.
John says
Thanks Victoria. But the installer file is only 10MB. Are they requiring us to sign in with an Adobe ID to use the standalone? If that’s the case, I’m done with Lightroom and Adobe.
Victoria Bampton says
Yes you have to sign in now. What concerns you about that? They’ve done it primarily to make support easier, especially for people who lose their serial numbers.
John says
Ugh! I object to them tracking usage and possibly sending data they’re not entitled to back to their servers – it’s happened before (http://www.networkworld.com/article/2692523/microsoft-subnet/adobe-digital-editions-allegedly-spying-scanning-pcs-uploading-logs-to-servers.html). I am not submitting to their Big Brother bullying. If they don’t want my money, I’ll take it elsewhere.
Victoria Bampton says
I get that concern, but they learned their lesson. You can turn off the usage tracking. It warns of its intention to track usage data when you open LR6, and you can disable it in your Adobe account on the website. Then they only check for serial number and activation.
Manuel says
Well, I think John is right when he states that “Adobe really does not want you to download or use the standalone Lightroom 6”.
So far my experience is that the “Upgrade” option that it’s shown in the dropbox at Adobe’s webpage is greyed out no matter if the country is selected or not. It seems that you have to spend another $149 or subscribe to CC.
On the other hand, if you check for updates within Lightroom, (pop-up window), it takes you – surprise!? – to Lightroom CC. And if you try looking for old good ‘Download’ page, well, LR CC once again. If this is the case, I’ll keep LR 5, but as for my day to day assets management, ACDSee Ultimate will be my option.
Victoria Bampton says
In some cases, you have to press an Edit button to be able to change to the upgrade. Some people are also reporting you need to be signed in, although I’ve tried it signed in and out and got the Upgrade ok. Other people are reporting it’s not working correctly on certain country sites at the moment, so that might be the issue in your case. I think it’s going to take a few days for them to clear up this mess!
If you do download the trial, it’s marked as CC initially but the branding gets changed to LR6 when you enter a serial (it’s all the same build).
Ian says
Indeed, I had the same impression from their web site. It was constantly directing me away from what I want towards CC. The whole experience feels like a scamming web site. I find it really frustrating.
I really like Lr and have been using it for a long time now. I have little desire to change to something else. However having said that I will *not* be signing up for a software by subscription service so the way things are heading it may be forced to make a change.
Heavy Sigh!
Martin says
Hi Victoria
Many thanks for providing the download link. LR6 Standalone upgrade from LR5 was £59.09. I am just going to do a few backups and then install. I look forward to reading the updated LR – The missing FAQ
Kind regards
Martin
Victoria Bampton says
You’re welcome! Backups are always a good plan, although I’m pleased to say it’s been more than 24 hours and I haven’t heard of any data loss disasters so far!
Martin says
Hi Victoria
Some of use oldies do need a little help . I always forget what to do when I upgrade LR.
I backed up my old LR catalog, installed LR6, rebooted, uninstalled LR5 and all is well. Presumably I should now delete the ‘LR 5 Catalog Previews.Irdata’ & ‘Lightroom 5 Catalog.Ircat’ files, as LR6 has created new Ircat & Irdata files?
Regards
Martin
Victoria Bampton says
It should have asked to upgrade your catalog when you opened LR6 – did that happen? And everything looks normal when you open LR6, all of your photos are there etc.?
If so, I’d move the spare lrcat file to your backups and just delete the spare previews, if it’s still there.
Martin says
Victoria
Thanks, have deleted LR5 files and all is well in LR6. Perfecto!
Regards
Martin
Glyn Powell-Evans says
Yep great synopsis, appreciate how much work it was and looks like something for everyone. I was hoping that we might have seen ability to sync Smart collections with LR Mobile although realise it is complex. I have been using Mosaic Archive for iPad for sometime but it has stopped working and the guys do not reply to emails anymore. I was wondering about creating a LR collection with every photo in it and syncing this to Mobile, would this be practical? If I then created other small collections which include same photos would these end up being copied twice?
Victoria Bampton says
The whole smart collection thing ends up being far more complex than it first appears, but it’s a feature I’d like to see too. One collection will all photos works fine, although it takes ages to scroll through. The photos only get uploaded/downloaded once, regardless of how many collections it’s in, so no issue there.
Artem Sapegin says
Great post and lots of things I’d like to try.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks Artem. It’s a great release this time!
Dave Browning says
Joel Wolfson pointed me to your site. Wonderful. I’ve read everything I can find about what happens if you subscribe to CC and then in the future unsubscribe. The answer is still not clear.
Scenario: I purchase a perpetual update to my LR 5.7 to LR 6, and also subscribe to CC for LR and PS. In the future I cancel my CC subscription. DOES MY PERPETURAL LICENSED LR 6 STILL WORK WITH ALL FUNCTIONALITY ON MY LIBRARY? I don’t want to end up locked in to a subscription forever with no fallback option.
Victoria Bampton says
Yes, a perpetual license will work until your operating system no longer supports it.
If you just paid for the subscription and you stopped paying, everything would work apart from Develop module, Map module and Sync (and Photoshop and the mobile apps, of course)
Dave Browning says
Very clear – Thank you! (And just what I wanted to hear.)
Iain says
Great synopsis. Updated to Lightroom CC but it seems to have knocked out my DXO Optics Pro 10 from the Plug-in Extras. For that matter Optics Pro 10 says it is unable to transfer file to Lightroom as its not installed. Cant say on whether its a Lightroom CC problem or DXO problem. Why isn’t anything Adobe do be smooth and easy??
Victoria Bampton says
You’ll need to contact DXO because it’s their plug-in. Before you do so, you could just check whether it’s activated in the File menu > Plug-in Manager. It’s possible they installed their plug-in in a version-specific location.
Kjell Olsson says
Hi Victoria,
I managed to update from LR5 to LR6 without problems and have so far installed it on two of my three Macs (one iMac and one Macbook Air) which I sometime use simultaneously in the same house. I also have a Mac at another location, that I don´t use at the same time as the others. So I have never used more than two at a time.
I have not had any problems installing LR on all three Macs, but get a bit worried when you write:
“You can have 2 machines activated at a time”
Can you clear that for me, please….
/Kjell
Victoria Bampton says
Yep, you can install on all 3 macs, but it can only be activated on 2 machines at time. When you go to the third machine, it’ll tell you that you’ve already activated on the other 2 machines and ask you to deactivate them. All you have to do is press the button (you’ll need to be connected to the internet) and sign in again. It’s really quite simple – I’ve been switching back and forth between 5 machines.
Kjell Olsson says
A big stone fell from my heart 😉
Thanks Vctoria!

“All you have to do is press the button (you’ll need to be connected to the internet) and sign in again. It’s really quite simple – I’ve been switching back and forth between 5 machines.”
I suppose you use CC? Is it the same procedure for my perpetual LR6?
I just want to be 100% sure before I try to install on my third Mac…..
/Kjell
Victoria Bampton says
It should be exactly the same for a perpetual license.
Kjell Olsson says
OK-thanks!
Kjell Olsson says
Hi again Victoria,
Update 10 May:
It works fine, but I have to enter the serial number every time I log in.
Is this normal?
All of my different versions are registered.

Nooooo, that’s not normal. If that’s still happening, post it here: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family)

What doesn’t work Andrew? This thread went on a bit.
Andrew Freeman says
Sorry, deactivating a copy of LR6 remotely. Myself and a few others can’t seem to get it to work. I was wondering if it’s a bug associated with LR6 and not LRCC?
Victoria Bampton says
Interesting. I don’t have a perpetual license so I can’t check that myself. When you try to open it on a third computer, and it says it’s already activated on 2 machines, what options does it give you?

Looks like there are no changes done so far?
Victoria Bampton says
No, sorry.
John Price says
Great round up, thank you.
Q. Can you now position your watermark anywhere or do you still have the silly 9 point selection grid?
Victoria Bampton says
You mean per photo? No, that hasn’t changed. But you know you can position it anywhere as long as it’s relative to that 9 point grid?
Robert Reiser says
Victoria – thanks for this detailed post, I am looking forward to the book!
Would you happen to know why Adobe this time decided to not do a public beta?
Kind regards, Robert
Victoria Bampton says
It’s a lot more complicated these days, with the mobile sync etc. One of the early builds wiped out GPS data on thousands on my photos… you wouldn’t want that happening in a public beta! And by the time it’s close enough to be ‘safe’, it makes more sense just to go ahead and ship.
David Cox says
I am in the throws of changing from Aperture to LR and using the free trial at the moment. Will any of the face recognition info in Aperture come across to LR when i pluck up courage and move all my pictures across? I have just imported recently taken pictures into LR.
Many thanks
David
Victoria Bampton says
That’s a good question David, and I’m not 100% sure. Let me test and come back to you on that. Might take a few days as things are pretty manic right now!
David Cox says
Great, thanks for looking into it and I await your reply. I am definitely going down the CC route now Apple have stopped support for Aperture .
Mollysnoot says
Thanks for the comprehensive summary Victoria. Best one I’ve seen so far.
I wondered if you’d seen the discussions over on the official Adobe forum about a number of users with AMD Radeon cards failing the GPU test (and thus not getting the much anticipated GPU speed boost in Develop)? (Here’s one thread: )
Seems like virtually everyone reporting a problem on there meets the minimum spec (OpenGL 3.3, latest driver, 1Gb of VRAM), but the GPU still isn’t working. I think Adobe need to take a look at this: either their spec for GPUs is inaccurate, or they’ve missed a problem specific to AMD cards.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks Molly. Yes, I’m keeping an eye on those issues. The engineers will be watching carefully too, and finding a pattern in the reports. There’s such a wide range of graphics cards and drivers available on Windows, I’m not surprised something like this has cropped up.
Mollysnoot says
Thanks Victoria. 🙂
I’m glad the engineers are keeping an eye on this; I often feel a bit “powerless” when I encounter situations like this.
A pattern does seem to be emerging from the Adobe forum: anyone with an AMD Radeon HD card doesn’t seem to be able to get GPU to work (other AMD cards such as the R7 and R9 series are OK).
Feel free to pass my email over to an engineer if they want any further details from me. 🙂
Pavol says
Sharing your pain, using HP Elitepad 8460p with AMD Radeon HD7400M Series. I’m on latest drivers and using OpenGL in other programs, but reading the Adobe forum post (above) I do see there is pattern with the AMD HD cards 🙁
Victoria Bampton says
Yep, there does seem to be an issue with some AMD cards. They’ve been requesting extra information from users suffering from this problem so they can replicate it in-house.
Pavol says
There is fix working for many AMD HD cards, and worked for mine as well. The improvement is significant while doing basic exposure adjustments. Here are the steps to follow:
step 1. clean up and remove all AMD display software using
http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/16748/
step 2. reboot – your windows will start in VGA mode – dont panic
step 3. install version 14.4 of CCC and it will install the display drivers and AMD control centre software
step 4. reboot. Load LR-CC and check performance under preferences and it should now recognise the card.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks for sharing that Pavol!
gnohz says
Hi Victoria! I’d like to clarify one point.
Are there are functions in the cloud-based LR CC which will be unusable when I stop my subscription (other than LR Mobile syncing)? Would I be able to continue using the Develop module etc similar to the standalone?
Thanks for any help! 🙂
Victoria Bampton says
If you stop your subscription, 3 things stop working: mobile sync, the Develop module and the Map module.
gnohz says
Aww…that’s a pity. I was hoping we could at least continue using it without the mobile sync.
Once we choose the subscription route, we better be prepared to continue paying rent ;p
It also seems that the catalog (after updating it to the newest version) is not backward compatible with LR5. 🙁
Victoria Bampton says
Correct, although you could buy a perpetual LR6 license which would be compatible with the CC catalog format.
gnohz says
True!
Another quick one, if you don’t mind.
I’m located in Asia Pacific and I heard the LR 6 upgrade option ($79) is only available in the US. If I do manage to get my hands on one, would the serial number work on my copy of LR 5.7.1?
Just wondering if serial numbers are country specific.
Victoria Bampton says
They shouldn’t be country-specific, as far as I know, but you’d have to confirm with customer services. I’ve just checked most of the Asia Pacific websites and it’s available there, so I don’t know whether they haven’t updated the South East Asia site yet. Keep an eye on the bottom right corner of your country’s version of this page: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom.html)
gnohz says
Thank you Victoria! I managed to locate the standalone page after quite an arduous task which seemed like going around in circles! Adobe is making it difficult for us 😉
Victoria Bampton says
They’re really keen to get everyone on subscription!
Les Bowker says
I too was concerned about this and had a long online chat with Adobe today, trying to get a definite answer to this. I’ve included below the final part, which is definitely not what I was expecting. Can you perhaps get us a 100% clear statement from Adobe as to what we WILL have access to in LR CC if we cancel a CC Photography Plan? Many thanks for your fantastic efforts to help & educate us all.
Les Bowker: I have a year long subscription to the CC Photographers Plan. If I take the upgrade of LR to LR CC (which involves, as I understand it) an irreversible change to the Catalog format, and I decide to cancel my CC subscription at the end of the year, what will I still be able to do, if anything, with LR CC?
Sumanth: If you decide to cancel the subscription and stop paying for it you will no longer be able to use the application and any of it features too.
Les Bowker: But , as things stand now with LR5, if I were to stop the plan, I thought I could still continue to use LR5 for cataloging purposes, but not use some of the other features.
Sumanth: I’m sorry Les, you will not be able to use the application if you cancel it.
Les Bowker: Are you talking about the current situation with LR5, a new situation with LR CC or both? I am sure Adobe has in the past said LR5 could still be used for some features even if the plan was cancelled.
Sumanth: I see that you have PSE 10 and Creative Cloud Photography plan (one-year). May I know which application you are trying to use?
Les Bowker: I have indeed purchased PSE10 some time ago, but have not used it since taking out the CC Photography Plan. Before taking out the CC Photo Plan, I am certain I read, on forums and on sites light Laura Shoe & Victoria Brampton that, if subscriptions were cancelled, you would still have access to cataloguing facilities in LR – if not many people would be very concerned about wasting all the effort put into cataloguing. Is that understanding correct for LR5, will it be correct if I take the current upgrade to LR CC, will it be correct if I take an upgrade to LR6? This is very important to clarify.
Sumanth: Yes, since you own Photography plan the Current LR5 will be upgraded to LR6 automatically. If you cancel the subscription you will be able to use the application only till the next billing date. After the billing date you cannot use the application.
Les Bowker: That seems to be drastically different to what has been said in the past and I am very concerned. Just for completeness, can you please confirm with a simple Yes or No, if I cancel my plan, will I still have access to ANY features of LR?
Sumanth: No, you will not be able to use the application.
Les Bowker says
(Sorry, I thought I was replying to an earlier post, re access to LR features after cancelling LR & PS CC! – Hope the above isn’t too confusing!)
gnohz says
Hi Les, thanks for adding in. In fact, I talked to Adobe earlier too, and basically I got the impression that I will not be able to use the software when my subscription ends until I start paying again.
Victoria Bampton says
I’ve just emailed the product manager for confirmation that the information in his previous blog post is still correct. I’ll let you know when I hear back.
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Les. He’s wrong – here’s the official blog post when that changed: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2014/07/what-happens-to-lightroom-after-my-membership-ends.html)
Les Bowker says
Thanks, Victoria. Hope I’m not being too stupid or pedantic here, but to be clear (since Adobe chat people seem to be confused themselves), if I upgrade LR5 to LR CC under the Photographers Plan, and later cancel the subscription, will I still have access (to just the features mentioned in your link) through LR CC or will I have to revert to LR5 – presumably losing all the work I’ve done through the new LR CC/6 catalog structure?
(Note I have never purchased any version of LR other than through the Photography Plan.)
Les
Victoria Bampton says
No, I understand your concern Les. If you upgrade to LR CC and later cancel the subscription, you’ll be able to continue using that same LR6 build but Develop, Map and Sync will be disabled. You won’t need to revert to LR5. I’ve emailed Sharad to get confirmation (and so he can correct customer services), but I’m 99.99999% certain.
Victoria Bampton says
Good news… Sharad’s just confirmed that customer services were wrong. He’s going to update that blog post to clarify it.
gnohz says
Thanks so much Victoria! That clears up a number of things 🙂
As of now, I still see the standalone as the most viable option for me, at least until the syncing speed between desktop and mobile devices improves.
Once again, you have been a great help, and I look forward to your new book 😀
Victoria Bampton says
You’re welcome. Helps to be able to make an informed decision.
Gautam Biswas says
Thanks Victoria for this excellent summary.
I tried installing Lightroom CC from my Creative Cloud account but the installed app just keeps crashing whenever I launch it. Previously I was running LR5.7 standalone version. My computer is a Mac Pro running 10.10.3. Any suggestions?
Victoria Bampton says
When you say it crashes, you mean it shows the splash screen for a mo and then disappears. If so, sign out of the CC app (in the CC app preferences) and sign back in. That should do the trick. Here are instructions with pictures: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/sign-in-out-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html)

Adobe just wasn’t ready this morning when I called to give them my $79 to upgrade to LR6. However, I worked my way through it and they eventually sent me an e-mail with instructions anyway.
Thanks, Victoria, for the help on how to do this. Would that I had waited for it!

You’re welcome Adrian.

Thanks for the sign-in/sign-out trick- got me going with the new install in CC 🙂
But I still have “5.7 64-bit” installed- is it OK to uninstall it? And do I need to keep anything?
(Also- I have the Photographer bundle and Windows is showing me multiple versions of Ps- “CC”, “CC 2014” and “CC (64-bit)” how do I know which is the newest one I should keep???)
Thanks for being here to help us all negotiate this- can’t wait for the new book!
Victoria Bampton says
Excellent. Yes, you’re fine to uninstall 5.7.
You can uninstall PS CC and I think CC 64bit too. CC 2014 is the current one.

I purchased the upgrade for standalone LR5 to LR6 and when installed it does not show LR6 only LRCC

Hi Victoria , many thanks for the prompt reply.
Got it! BTW, you have to select ‘Edit’ before the pop up gives you the option of selecting ‘Upgrade’ (in case there are other numpties like me out there 🙂 ).
Thanks also for the comprehensive preview of new features.

Great, thanks for the update. It seems everyone gets to see a different version of that page!
Megan says
Soft proofing in CMYK …..can you only print to your own printer? Can’t you export a CMYK file to take to a printing business ?
Victoria Bampton says
It always outputs RGB data – even local inkjet printers expect RGB data. But no, you need Photoshop to actually convert to CMYK. The soft-proofing in Lightroom’s still useful while you’re editing though.

Thanks for your answer Victoria, much appreciated ????.

I have very recently recommended Lightroom 5 to 3 fellow students whom have purchased standalone in the last few weeks – since the NEC show. I am probably going to get strung up by the extremities when they find 6 just came out. Is there any kind of free auto update for new [student] users in this sort of case. I mean its only a few weeks since the UK’s major show and Adobe where there why not announce then
ProDesignTools says
Yes John, check out this page from Adobe and hopefully you’ll qualify:

Can anyone advise what the UK upgrade to Lightroom 6 would be, and where to get it? When I click on the links Victoria has posted, I’m only offered the ‘full’ software option for £103.88 – can’t see an upgrade option anywhere 🙁 BTW, I have Lightroom 4 – assuming an upgrade option exists (!), will it ‘upgrade’ from LR4?
Thanks
Neil
Victoria Bampton says
You have to follow all of the instructions Neil – click that link, then click Buy, then change the pop-up from Full to Upgrade. Upgrading from LR4’s fine. It’s £59.09 including VAT.

Great new report – well done – you are always on the ball!! Best wishes from Tim at http://www.photo-keywords.com

Thanks Tim!
Karl says
Just want to say thanks for your report on LR6. You did a great job of determining just what LR users want to know and then conveyed it concisely. Seeing how well you did this, I’ll be buying the new version of your book when it’s available.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks Karl, much appreciated!
Peter Emery says
I must admit that I am disappointed with Adobe over hiding links to the trial of Lightroom 6. I would like to purchase software properly rather than, effectively, renting it. There are a number of people I know who, like me, work on contract work. Where we could be working for a number of months on a contract, until it’s completed, then can spend a few months unemployed. In these cases rentals (or subscription packages) can be of little interest to us.
Thank you for your great article.
I will try your links tomorrow.
Victoria Bampton says
You’re not the only one Peter. Since the CEO is very keen on the subscription-only, I’m pretty grateful they’re still doing a perpetual license version at all. :-S If you install the trial before purchasing, it’ll say it’s a CC trial, but don’t worry, you’ll be able to enter your perpetual license serial number when the trial expires and carry on as normal.
Chris Wesselman says
Is there a way for facial recognition to be available on a second machine (say, work & home)? It would be cool if that sync’d through CC. It probably takes a while to set this up…
Victoria Bampton says
All the data’s stored in your catalog, so if you’re carrying your catalog back and forth (or on an external drive you plug in), the face recognition data will go too.
Chris Wesselman says
I couldn’t get CC to work either. Quitting it & re-opening didn’t help. Restarted my Mac and it showed up right away. Thanks for this good info page, too!
Victoria Bampton says
Excellent, glad to hear you’re up and running Chris!
Sam Pringle says
Just to add that I needed to log out of creative cloud and log back in to make LightroomCC open for me too. Windows 8.1. I had Lightroom 5 boxed installed (although I have a CC subscription). Manually uninstalled this and rebooted. Installed LightroomCC but afterwards it would not launch. It did nothing when clicked from the link the .exe or the Cloud app. However, logging out of creative cloud and logging back in did the trick and it launched OK. Strange!
Victoria Bampton says
They’ve had a few glitches with the CC installation this evening. First time with a brand new installer and an awful lot of people trying to download at once, so I’m not overly surprised there have been hiccups. Thankfully they’ve all been fairly easy to fix with the sign out sign in procedure.
Francois Morin says
Hi,
Just upgraded lightroom to CC and the it doesn’t launch. The new Lightroom splash screen is quickly displayed and then nothing. Tried rebooting, un-installing, still the same behaviour. I’ve got an iMac 27 (Mid 2011) with 16 GB or RAM.
Any clues why Lightroom won’t launch?
Thanks,
Victoria Bampton says
Try signing out of the CC app (under the CC app’s preferences) and then sign back in. That’s doing the trick in most cases.
Francois Morin says
Right on! It worked. Thanks Victoria.

Best review/summary I’ve seen so far. Well done Victoria.

Thanks David!
Matt O'Brien says
Complements on a job well done. Your list is superb (as usual).
I am happy to see performance improvements, the panorama merge will probably be useful, but really really disappointed the Book Module is still (from my perspective) unloved and missing fundamental features, such as placing a picture or text where I like on a page and not to be constrained by a poorly designed template model.
I will explore LR6 in more detail in a few days time when the initial pressure on downloads, etc has normalised and feedback from early adaptors can be assessed in terms of basic application stability.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks Matt. It takes days to compile, so I’m glad people are finding it useful. Yes, you’re not the only one disappointed about the lack of movement in the Book module. I’m guessing their stats show not too many people use it… keep making noise on the FR forum.
Liz Finnie says
That’s ironic. I, and many others, don’t use it because it isn’t flexible. No wonder the stats are down. Thanks for a great repot.
Victoria Bampton says
I know! They don’t believe me, so I need you guys all putting in requests and making some noise at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family) if it’s going to get some traction.
Al Guden says
if you’re having issues seeing the update, reboot. I did and it came right up. Installed with no issues.
Josef Kissinger says
Thank you so much for your wonderful blog!I was wondering, since you are much higher up in the food chain than I am, if you could relay a few feature suggestions to Adobe for me. The photo merge and hdr features are magnificent. However, I would like to be able to do an HDR pano automatically without having to individually merge each bracket and then merge the brackets to the pano. It wouldn’t be hard for Lightroom to do this all at once.
The other feature I would like is to be able to independently change the white balance instead of one global change. In a mixed lighting scenario i would like to independently control the warm tones to make them cooler and vice versa with cool tones. The same would apply to the tint. Instead of globally applying a magenta cast to the whole scene which would only correct the overall white balance, I would like to be able to target the green cast coming form the florescent lighting and slide it towards magenta without effecting the white balance of the entire image.
Another example, since i edit a lot of real estate shots, would be to cool down the incandescent lights without affecting the white balance of the ambient light coming in through the windows.
I know you have some influence, or at least you have some friends that do. If you like my ideas, please pass them along to the appropriate people. Thank you!!
Victoria Bampton says
Make sure you post the requests at the Feature Request site too Josef http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family)

do you know what the differences are between CC and 6. If i remember CC and 5 have a few differences like cloud and a couple other features. i guess they were not that important because i can’t remember them lol.
Victoria Bampton says
At the moment, LR6 users just don’t have access to mobile sync (LR mobile and LR web). That gap could widen in future, as they can add new features to the CC version but they can’t add them to LR6 outside of the current financial quarter. So 6 months or a year down the road, there could be more features in CC. We don’t know yet (and I’m not convinced they know yet either!!!)
Robert Wilson says
Ok, found the LR6 standalone download. After going on Chat with Adobe, they suggested I use another browser (I was using Chrome, but they didn’t know that), and low and behold the option that was not there in Chrome, appeared in IE. So, in Canada-English this location worked for me in IE (not Chrome). http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom.html)
Victoria Bampton says
Ah, yes, Adobe’s website is notoriously fussy about which browser you use. Well done!
Joseph Scopino says
Excellent detailed listing of LR6 features, as usual – Thanks ! Aside from conversion to 64-bit which for Macs is becoming the norm these days, I don’t see what the big fuss is over things like facial recognition, and photo merge – really ?? The fact Abode decided to blow-off making any effort to improve the Book module ( yes, the page layout customization ) is very disappointing … “better luck next time I guess”.
Victoria Bampton says
Different features for different people. Talking really generally, the 3 headline features target different users – face recognition will be popular with family photographers (and was the most requested feature by far), photo merge will be more popular with enthusiasts and the GPU performance will be popular with pros. Sometimes all it takes is one of the minor features to make an upgrade worthwhile.
chandler says
What do you loose if you buy the perpetual license vs Creative Cloud license? thanks

Thanks for these detailed notes! I have existing keywords for people, and your section on converting them to new People Keywords addressed a lot of my concerns. I do have a followup question: After you convert an ordinary keyword to a People Keyword, can you still apply that keyword to an image in the “ordinary” ways, without using face detection or drawing a face box? Sometimes I take a picture of someone’s shoes or hands, and want it to be keyworded with their name, but their face is not visible.
Victoria Bampton says
Excellent question – and yes you can.
mph says
Wonderful, thanks!
President Arthur says
Will echo other sentiments and thank you for the best description of new LR features around. Particularly on facial recognition and keyword/metatagging. Thanks so much. Nobody else breaks this all down better for experienced LR users who want to know nitty-gritty.
From what you write, it seems that, if one has already been inserting people’s names as keywords, the recommended “procedure” would be to:
1) Convert all regular keywords that are for identifying people into “People Keywords.”
2) Then let LR build the index of faces.
Then, is it true that:
A) The original keywords remain in the metadata and can still be used to sort in Library? Even after conversion to become a People Keyword? That is: is the conversion either/or, or both/and?
B) One will still need to use the new process to assign People Keywords to faces in photos?
C) If one tagged a photo for, say, “John Doe” because he appears in a photo, but his face is not recognized as a face by LR, LR will still prompt the user to find John Doe’s face in the photo, “knowing” that he appears in it because there is a “John Doe” People Keyword that was converted over from a regular keyword? (Hope this makes sense. I’m wondering if one has to be diligent about making sure all originally keyworded photos are being “caught” by the facial indexing process.)
Just trying to plot out the best way to switch over to facial recognition and People Keywords after years of “manually” adding keywords for all individuals appearing in all pictures. It’s been a maniacal (and kind of Quixotic and/or Sisyphean) effort and I’m terrified of either ruining countless hours of anal-retentive work, or not fully taking advantage of the fact that I’ve spent countless hours doing anal-retentive work.
Please, Victoria, you’re my only hope…
Victoria Bampton says
Hi President Arthur. Steps 1 and 2 can be either way round, but yes.
And in answer to your other queries:
A – yes – people keywords are just a special kind of keyword that can be used for face recognition or normal keywording or both.
B – Correct. Try filtering by an existing name keyword and then switching to People view. It won’t ONLY show that person (because there might be other people in the photo too) but it’ll narrow it down nicely.
C – If LR doesn’t find a face, he’ll just remain tagged with his normal keyword, but without a face region defined. A photo including the back of his head would be a good example.
In short, you’re not likely to ruin anything without actually deleting the keyword from the keyword list, but you can use your existing keyword to speed the process of identifying the face regions. Does that make sense? It’s been a really long week, so please say if not! LOL
President Arthur says
Victoria,
Just wanted to come back and thank you for your reply and additional explanation. It’s much appreciated. FWIW, whenever you come out with a “Missing FAQ” for this version, it’s going to be an automatic purchase for me.
It ended up taking some 4 days or so of indexing for LR to scan all photos in my catalog. Some 100,000+ photos and just about as many recognized faces (LR is either bad or very conservative about determining different faces are the same person)
I just want to confirm that, in my opinion, your instructions are correct: convert all the normal keywords one used to “identify” people in photos to People Keywords, then do facial indexing, then start the long project of tagging faces.
Will echo that the conversion of people keywords to People Keywords is mostly about preserving the nomenclature one has been using, by making sure that’s what pops up in Autocomplete when tagging faces, while retaining the ability to filter by keywords just as one had done before.
It won’t help, significantly, in the project of tagging faces. Only in the sense that one can filter by keyword while in People mode, so if one tends to have pictures of people by themselves (i.e. “formal” portraits), then it can actually speed up face tagging tremendously.
If your photos are mostly “documentary” photos of friends and family…it will increase “signal to noise ratio” but there’ll still be a cacophony of faces to tag. Nonetheless, it’s still good practice, for the reasons listed above.
President Arthur says
Also, in case it’s not apparent, when I say “your instructions are correct,” I don’t mean to imply as if my confirmation has any particular value. It’s now very obvious to me that your analysis and recommendations were considered and highly informed and while I didn’t think they wouldn’t be, I needed to work through the process to truly appreciate it. And until I realized I could just revert to a Catalog backup if things went wrong, I was super-anxious about losing man-hours of work that, over the years, amount to man-days, possibly man-weeks.
Thanks again!
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks Arthur.
Yes, it’s pretty conservative, at least in People view. It gets more relaxed in the Single Person view. In theory it gets better over time, although it still insists I’m Winnie the Pooh.
You’re absolutely right about the signal to noise ratio – filtering by keyword helps, but it’s not a cure-all.
And FWIW, I appreciate your confirmation that it’s working the same way for you. This is one of those features that needs lots of eyes on it to work out the best way! We’ve been discussing it internally for months, but the real world always turns up extra details we haven’t spotted.
President Arthur says
Last time I’ll chime in on the topic. A few final notes…the first being a tip that might be obvious, but in case it isn’t:
When assigning People Keywords to faces, filter. Don’t view all faces in all photos unfiltered. If you keyworded for people, filter by a person’s keyword. Or, at least, filter by folder or something else. LR recognized some ~100,000 faces in my photos and highlighting faces and dragging them up to “Named People” is almost too slow to be used, when viewing faces from All Photos. Working from a smaller set makes LR much more responsive.
It also limits the number of Named People to choose from, when dragging and dropping faces to assign People Keywords to them. That’s something I’m going to anticipate is going to get to be a very “noisy” window when I have all People Keywords entered…for me, this numbers in the hundreds.
A big problem I see is that one can use Ctrl and Shift to select multiple faces, as one would expect and that’s good, but when one has multiple faces selected and types in a People Keyword, I *think* it only labels the one “active” selected face, not all the highlighted faces. Which is a problem because lots of Named People will mean dragging-and-dropping — the most natural way to tag multiple faces — will not be an ideal way to do it.
Serban says
Victoria,
I was unsuccessful in trying to convert an ordinary keyword to a People Keyword. How can I do that?
Thanks
Victoria Bampton says
If you right-click on the Keyword in the Keyword List panel, you should be able to select Convert Keywords to Person Keywords. If it’s not available, it’s because you’ve already done it. It won’t look like it’s changed anything, but when you start typing under a person’s face, it’ll be available in the autocomplete pop-up.
Serban says
You are right, they already were converted. Clever!

When will the magic book be ready? Going on vacation May 9th, would love to it then…Thanks for all you do!!
Victoria Bampton says
I’m plowing through the design, so the PDF should be available within the next 2 weeks, and I’m hoping to get the ePub/Kindle done by then too. The paperback’s likely to be 2-3 weeks after that. So you should have eBooks in time for your vacation.
Robert says
Does anyone know exactly where the face recognition metadata is stored? Is it the standard iptc “PersonInImage” or is it an Adobe specific field?
Victoria Bampton says
In the database, you mean? Or in the exported photos?
Robert says
In the actual photo metadata. In other words, if I export the file as a tiff or jpg, and include metadata, is the Face recognition stuff present and if so, where. Hope that makes sense.
Victoria Bampton says
It’s stored in the keywords plus the Person Shown IPTC Extension field.
Robert says
Thanks for the prompt reply Victoria. This is potentially very good news for me. Can’t wait to get my hands dirty. I’ve just discovered your site and I like what I see.
Victoria Bampton says
You’re welcome Robert! Nice to meet you!
ProDesignTools says
Really great stuff Victoria, thank you! Can’t wait for those book updates and hope that Clone tool can perform miracles soon. 🙂
BTW, here are the Lightroom 6/CC direct download links for whoever would like to access the software installers directly (either subscription or perpetual) on either Windows or Mac OS.
Victoria Bampton says
Thanks ProDesignTools!
ProDesignTools says
Sure, glad to help!
A lot of folks are reporting they aren’t seeing the update/upgrade show up in their Creative Cloud Desktop App, so with that page you can also download and install the new LR release without using that.
Victoria Bampton says
Absolutely! The other trick is to sign in and out of the CC app – there were server problems which have now been fixed but it’ll take a while to trickle through properly.
Ernesto says
For certain strange reason installing from my Creative Cloud app wasn’t working, I tried twice, all the files installed in program files and so on, but when lauching Lightroom.exe or the shorcut… nothing happens.
Installed the trial, gave my Adobe ID, and everything seems to be working.
Victoria Bampton says
Ah, the mysteries of computers. Well done for getting it working!
Ernesto says
That’s what I haven’t read yet that the other option was to sign out sign from the Adobe app
Amit says
I had the issue with LR CC not starting after install and after a little googling, I found that signing out and then back into the Creative cloud fixed the issue for me.
Raeburn says
I had the same problem and found the answer on the Creative Cloud Blog. I had to sign out of Creative Cloud and the sign back in. Presto it was all good!
Brian Wilson says
Yes! Very Many Thanks Again, Victoria. The link worked. Looking forward to the book.
Rob says
Thx for the UK link, that worked! 😀
I’m happy again. Hope LR7 will also be available as stand alone.
Victoria Bampton says
I hope so too Rob! They’ll base that decision on user feedback.
Ian says
Base their decision on user feedback – really? That is good. How do I actually go about giving them that feed back?
I really would like to tell them what I think. The trouble is the signals are all not good: it is hard to actually buy the upgrade and they do not even make it clear that the perpetual license option is even still available. I fear that by not giving people a fair choice their sales numbers will skew towards CC even more so and they will take that as “feedback”.
Victoria Bampton says
Making some noise on the the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family) would be a good place to start. You’ll even find the CEO’s email address if you google it.
Brian Wilson says
I couldn’t get the link to the Perpetual Upgrade to work. When I tried to pay, it said that I was not registered for that country (US). It suggested that I sign out and sign into an account in that country (US). Do I need to re-register in US to purcahe the upgrade?
Victoria Bampton says
Bottom left, change your country to wherever you are. Here’s a direct UK one: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(https://www.adobe.com/uk/products/catalog/software._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software_sl_photoshopcollection.html)
Fernando says
There is no mention of added flexibility to the book module.
I would have liked to see the option of defining custom page sizes and layouts as one can do in the print module.
Victoria Bampton says
No changes there, sorry Fernando. I’d like to have seen that too.
Robert Wilson says
>>>Perpetual licenses ARE still available but they’re hard to find on Adobe’s website! It’s $149 for new licenses and $79 for upgrades.
Hard to find? I can’t find the Lightroom 6 upgrade or new download for the perpetual licence. Can anyone help?
Victoria Bampton says
Did those direct links not work at the top of the post Robert? The trial is marked as CC but it’ll convert to a perpetual one when you enter the serial you buy.
James Burkstrand says
Just a super summary. Thanks.
Now I have to wait for CC to catch up.
Patience, Jim
And add my name to the new book list.
Victoria Bampton says
Will do Jim!
jack macdonald says
Worked for me! Thanks for finding that link
Victoria Bampton says
Excellent, thank for the update Jack.
Rob says
The direct link Victory provided works, I logged in, tried to purchase the upgrade but it won’t allow me because Im not based in USA but NL. Even spoke via the chat but same checkout error …. why oh why are adobe forcing LR CC on me. Not happy atm.
Victoria Bampton says
I’ve just updated the post – click the link, then change country in the bottom left corner, then it should work.
Lance Moody says
No GPU acceleration on Mac. Thanks Lightroom Team! It’s great to be second class!
Victoria Bampton says
Yes there is! Which Mac?
Lance Moody says
Ah, I see my own error…. sorry.
Victoria Bampton says
Phew! Was it something in my post that wasn’t clear? If so, let me know which bit tripped you up and I’ll change it.
Lance Moody says
Victoria–you did a wonderful job…my own limitations tripped me up!
Ian says
Er… nothing in the CC app on my Mac at the moment. I see LR 5 and it shows as installed and up to date, but no LR CC anywhere in the app list and no option to update/upgrade to LR CC.
Victoria Bampton says
It’s taking a while to push around the world. There are hundreds of thousands of people trying to update at once!
Ian says
Ok. Off to help a client and then I’ll check again when I get back.
Fernando says
Personally, in my own workflow, I will be delaying my upgrade to Lightroom CC/6. The reason being that I purchased a 10” Windows 8.1 Tablet in December in order to use Lightroom in the field, especially when I want to do tethering. However, most Windows tablets only support 32-bit OS, so the new version of Lightroom will not work on them. Since the two catalogue formats are not compatible, I cannot even switch between versions. The only thing I would be able to do is go from the Tablet to the PC but not back again.
Victoria Bampton says
I didn’t know that!!! Thanks for sharing Fernando!
VirtualMirage says
What tablet do you have? Many of the newer tablets from the past few years that are not Windows RT are 64-bit, or at the very least, 64-bit capable. The 64-bit capable ones that are running a 32-bit may only require a reinstall of the OS, choosing the 64-bit build.
If you haven’t done so already, I would recommend double checking your tablet to verify it isn’t already running a 64-bit OS. One quick giveaway without even looking is if it has more than 4GB of RAM, then it is running 64-bit. 32-bit only support up to 4GB of RAM unless you force it to use PAE, which is usually reserved only for professional server environments.
Fernando says
Not quite true or that easy to resolve.
Although many sport a 64-bit CPU and architecture, the BIOS however only support 32-bit OS. That however is not really the main problem, as there are ways to get around that. The main problem is that most suppliers don’t have 64-bit versions of the drivers for such devices based on the Intel Reference Design. Maybe with Windows 10 on the horizon, that can be resolved, but as of now, many of these tablets don’t offer support for a 64-bit OS. Please note that I am not talking about Microsoft Surface or the like.
VirtualMirage says
That’s why I was curious as to what tablet you are referring to. Outside of Microsoft’s Surface, I’m seeing quite a few Toshibas, HPs, Asus’, and Dell’s that are all 64-bit (and come with Windows 8.1 64-bit installed), which is why I was mentioning that 64-bit tablets are quite commonplace and just wanted to make sure you have checked all avenues when it comes to your tablet that it is indeed not 64-bit capable.
But I was incorrect to refer to 64-bit tablets being out for a few years. There were some out around 2 years ago or so, but they really didn’t become more common place until around spring 2014. Some of the earlier tablets, and even now, run off of an Intel Atom and they were handicapped to 32-bit. Due to size and power limitations, many of the earlier tablets ran on hardware such as this while there were a few amongst them that had beefier hardware in a tablet package, at a premium of course. Power and size limitations are not as much of a limiting factor now, so they are able to pack more capable hardware in a tighter package and still maintain battery life and heat requirements, on top of becoming cheaper. There are Atom 64 machines out now but I believe some of them are still being limited to 32-bit outfits.
Gianni Costanzi says
Hi Victoria, I’ve just upgraded to LR6 and started tagging people! It will be a huge time-saver for me once I’ve finished the initial tag, since I usually spend a lot of time painting people names keywords on the photos 🙂
Victoria Bampton says
Glad to hear it Gianni!
Paul Franklin says
Yeah, well who buys windows tablets?
