Lightroom CC 2015.6 and Lightroom 6.6 have been released today, and the team have added a few new gems for CC subscribers, as well as the normal camera/lens support and bug fixes for everyone. (For the update links, skip to the end of the post.)
So what’s new?
- CC only – There’s a new Guided Upright tool, which allows you to correct perspective by drawing lines on the image.
- To use:
- Apply Lens Profile in Lens Corrections tab.
- Click the Guided button in the Transform panel.
- Click and drag 2-4 lines on the photo, along lines that should be vertical/horizontal.
- Fine tune the results using the manual Transform sliders if needed, including shifting it left/right/up/down the canvas using the new X/Y Offset sliders.
- The Lens Corrections panel has been split into a simpler Lens Corrections panel and a new Transform panel for all users (but it’ll be missing the Guided button in the perpetual license version).
- Performance Improvements in Develop
- In CC 2015.6 / 6.6, Lightroom has become smarter about anticipating which photos you’ll edit next. When you’re working in the Develop module, it preloads the two photos either side of your current photo, so when you move on, it loads much quicker. This only applies when you’re working with originals, as smart previews are already quick to load.
- Merge panoramas using smart previews when the originals are offline.
- Until now, you could only do a panorama merge when the originals were available, but now it’ll work if you’re using smart previews too. A smart preview panorama is smaller than one created from originals, but it’s still useful when the originals aren’t available, if only for testing whether a merge will work well.
- A Keyword Count is now available for stock photographers who need to apply a minimum number of keywords to each photo. To view the count, hover over the Keywords field in the Keywording panel when it’s set to Enter Keywords, and the count appears in the tooltip.
- CC only – There’s a new Pending Sync Activity section in Preferences > Lightroom mobile tab, which documents sync activity to help track down any sync errors.
- CC only – Deleting synced data is now done from the web interface to avoid accidental deletion.
Updated instructions for these changes are already waiting in the Members Area for owners of my Lightroom CC/6 book.

Bug fixes:
There are loads of bug fixes. These are the main ones:
- Fixed – Unable to see the New Folder preview inside the Destination panel within the Import Dialog.
- Fixed – Lightroom would crash when using tethered shooting with certain Canon camera models.
- Fixed – Tethered shooting with Canon 5D did not work on MacOS 10.11 El Capitan.
- Importing Fuji files should display the thumbnails significantly faster.
- Photoshop Elements catalog import now works even if the photos are on a NAS.
Library
Map
- Lightroom no longer fills in the Sublocation field when reverse geocoding.
- Due to a change in Google’s Terms & Conditions, the Map module now works in Turkey.
Develop
- Fixed – Unable to export user-created / custom Develop presets (Mac only).
- Fixed – The “As Shot” White Balance showed different values when using the Adobe Standard color profile and other camera matching color profiles. (Affected specific cameras only: Canon EOS IDx MKII, Canon EOS 80D, Canon EOS Rebel T6).
Photo Merge
- Fixed – Unable to merge images after using the Recover Edges plugin for older cameras with incamera crop applied.
- Fixed – Unable to create panoramas or HDR images when merging from a collapsed stack of original files.
Export
- Fixed – Removing face tags causes photos to get stuck in “To Be Republished” state when using Publish Service Plugins such as Smugmug.
- Performance improvements in Export mean bulk exports should now be faster.
- Fixed – “Print to File” feature does not work if the default filename was changed by the customer. (Mac OSX 10.11.3 only)
Slideshow
Book
- Fixed – Scrollbars missing from book module. (Windows only)
Other
- Fixed – Inconsistent dialog behavior when using fullscreen mode in Mac OSX 10.11.

How do I update?
To update, go to Help menu > Updates or click the Update button in the CC app. The update servers take a while to push the updates around the world, to avoid crashing the servers, but if you’re in a hurry to update, here are the direct links to the patches: Windows – Mac
Always the best info from The LR Queen 🙂
Have any Windows 10 users attempted to download/upgrade to v2015.6? How successful was it?
Went fine for me. Win10 64, LR 6.
It’s proving to be a wonderfully quiet release. No new issues reported!
“Update All” Lr Ps Br- Went very smooth, no problems. (Win 10)
Thanks Victoria
Thanks all for the response 😉
LR CC, Photoshop CC and Bridge all updated swiftly on my Win 10 machine and I have a very slow connection speed.
The guided upright tool seems to work well and I have no new performance problems
Allan – excellent 😉 Thanks/Dennis
it’s now looking about time to upgrade from Lr5.7 (??)
Looking that way Ian! It’s by far the most stable LR6 release to date. The CC subscription and perpetual upgrade purchase links are on this page:
SO what are the benefits for those of us who aren’t CC users?
Can you not read? It is VERY clearly laid out up above John!
Anything that doesn’t say CC only next to it (which is only 3 of them). The Develop performance improvements are the big one for me.
This is the 2. update, where ALL my already synced LR-mobile photos will be synced again!
Am i the only person having this trouble???
I’ve only heard one other report. Sorry Markus! Make sure you report it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family so the engineers are aware.
Hmmm I’m having the same thing happen as well (already synced photos are syncing again) and it seems like the Camera Profile might changed, which triggers the re-sync.
I can’t remember for 100 % sure if I really have been having a different Camera Profile for the couple of photos I looked at but it does look suspicious as with one of my Nikons (D300) my import preset include changing to Camera Profile to Camera Standard v4 and it’s been changed to Camera Standard (the one without v4 suffix).
If this is true (updating to LR 2016.6 will change Camera Profiles on photos) it’s alarming as Camera Profiles can change the look of the photo dramatically. It basically means all photos should be reprocessed to check the Camera Profile setting.
Will leave a post on Photoshop Family forum.
…and it looks like after updating the metadata on those synced files they now get resynced because of new rendering (because of the new Camera Profiles changing the look of the photos).
I was watching the “Syncing xxx photos” go down to 34 (from total of 7125 synced photos) and Pending Sync Activity said it was metadata being uploaded but now after 40 minutes it’s “Syncing 6 345 photos” and Pending Sync Activity show “rendering” as well as “metadata”.
OS X 10.11.5 Activity Monitor says Lightroom taking up all between 200 % – 600 % of processor load and now taking 8–10 GB of memory on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro with quadcore i7 2.3 GHz and 16 GB memory.
I have to stop working and let it upload those already synced photos, again, as this happened with previous Lightroom update as well.
Now to report on Photoshop Family forum.
The Photoshop Family is the best bet. I’ve also flagged it up with a member of the Lightroom team.
Updated to LR 2015.6 last night. Contrary to what others are reporting this version brought back some of the major problems I was experiencing prior to LR 2015.5. It slowed down shot-to-shot browsing in the Library module. In the Develop module I was experiencing freeze ups after zooming into images while editing. This update brought back some of the frustrating problems I have experienced with LR 6 since it was released. I reinstalled LR and went back to 2015.5. By the way, I’m running Windows 10, run my LR catalog on a Samsung SSD.
Turn off graphics acceleration… problem solved.
For some hardware configurations, that helps. But not all. If only things were so simple, but it never is for software titles on virtually infinitely many possible hardware and operating system configurations.
Wish it was that simple. Graphics acceleration has been off for a long time. No, this update was not good for me.
That’s an odd one Dan. I haven’t heard any other reports, so please make sure you report it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family and also double check that your graphics driver is up to date from the manufacturer or GPU is unchecked in preference.
This is very frustrating to me. I have wanted this “guided upright” feature for a long time, and suggested it on their site many years ago. (Other products, such as AutoPano Pro, have had this for as long as I’ve used them.)
Now they release it but make it only available to CC users. The CC license is frustrating to say the least. I do have my own CC license, but 95% of my LR work is done at work, for a large corporation, where they opted for standard licensing instead of CC. And I straighten nearly EVERY SINGLE IMAGE I SHOOT. The auto/full/vertical options have been a huge timesaver, but they still miss at least 40% of the time for the images I do. This guided upright function would be fantastically helpful. But I don’t get to use it because of the purchasing decision of a corporate IT director and this tremendously frustrating choice Adobe has made to not make it available to users of perpetual licenses.
I have been using LR since the first public beta. I have been a loyal user for over a decade now. But issues like this make me wish for viable competition.
That is frustrating Jon! New features can only be added to the perpetual license in main paid releases due to legal/accounting complications, which has always been the case. I don’t suppose work would let you sign in with your CC license rather than their own?
That is demonstrably false. New features have been added to minor releases all along.
My license is already in use on two computers. And, no, my employer will not benefit from my personal license for which they did not pay. If they want to pay me to do things slowly then so be it.
Are there particular new features you can think of? They’ve added new features in x.1 releases as long as they fell in the same accounting quarter in the past, and they’ve managed to get in minor tweaks to existing features, but no new notable new features that I can remember.
Here’s more information on the accounting legalities: http://prodesigntools.com/why-creative-cloud-gets-exclusive-features.html
The most recent example I can think of, which happens to be remarkably similar in scope and function, is Boundary Warp. Lightroom 6.4, released in January 2016. Obviously not an x.1 release, nor the same quarter as April, 2015.
Note the similar scope of the function, wherein it adds functionality to an existing feature, improving the quality and usefulness of the image. It even very specifically deals with how a perspective-manipulated image is rendered. Clearly Guided Upright could have been a minor update to the perpetual license just as Boundary Warp was.
Boundary Warp was CC only: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/whats-new-in-lightroom-cc-2015-4-and-lightroom-6-4/ (so if you’re seeing it in the perpetual version, that’s a bug!)
Interesting. I have only used it at home. I checked the Wikipedia article to confirm my memory of the event and it agreed that it was a feature of 6.4.
Apparently Wikipedia can be wrong. Someone should publicize this finding! 😉
That said, I do remember receiving many updates with new, never-before-used features before the CC product split. I remember thinking how great it was to get new features without needing to buy an upgrade. Multiple times. It was one of the reasons I told people to use LR instead of Aperture and other options. It was kind of a big deal to some of us.
LOL Wikipedia… yup! You’re welcome to run back through the “what’s new” section of the blog to see if you can find the new features you’re thinking of. There definitely have been new features in x.1 releases in the past, so perhaps those are the ones you’re thinking of.
I have read that this update does away with the destination folder when importing. Is that true?
Thank you,
No, nothing’s changed in Import Jim.
Anyone else having issues with “Don’t Import Suspected Duplicates” and the Destination Folder not working in Lightroom CC 2015.6?
Even when selected in the import settings, the “Don’t Import Suspected Duplicates” no longer works after upgrading to the newest CC 2015.6 version. Restarting Lightroom and the computer don’t solve the issue. With this setting checked, Lightroom now ignores images which have been previously imported and imports them anyways with a -2 suffix, [e.g. IMG_8315-2] I’ve tried this on two different computers, one of them not mine, and it is happening with that instance of Lightroom as well. Is anyone else else having these issues?
Another thing that happens, at least on both Macs I tested is that when you import images, and choose a folder to import to, the next time you go to import images, it no longer remembers the last folder you used to import. For me this folder is the top of my archive so that I can make subfolders under that main folder, etc.
Is anyone else else having either of these issues?
I’ve been able to reproduce the destination folder. It’s still remembering the previous folder – it shows in the top right hand corner – but the Destination panel isn’t opening up to show it selected.
I’ll try to duplicate the duplicates issue.
Hi Victoria,
If I just upgraded to 6.6, and wanted to go back to, say, 6.4, could I use the link you posted back then revert?
You want the instructions in this post: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-roll-back-to-lightroom-2015-1-1-or-lightroom-6-1-1/ (although obviously you can go to 6.4 rather than 6.1.1)
Had something really bizarre happen with latest update, not ready to state that it happened because of update. I was working on a virtual copy, and LR was running slow. All of a sudden the virtual copy disappeared, no dialog box wanting to know if I wanted to delete the virtual copy. Tried to “undo”, no go. Tried doing a search for the virtual copy by file name, keyword, etc. Anyone ever encounter this issue?
YES! Maybe twice? So weird. Just gone. Never seen or heard from again. I’ve seen it over multiple updates, but not enough to be able to report it in any way that could be understood or duplicated.
I had 2 virtual copies of that image, it was the VC-1 that self destructed. So I just went in and created another virtual copy, it labeled it as VC -2, even though there was already a VC-2. Did it twice, same result. Weird.
Bizarre indeed! If you ever manage to figure out what triggers it (or if it happens more often), make sure you report it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family
Anybody install with El Cap? How’d it go?
I’ve been running it on El Capitan on 2 machines – all fine here.
Thanks Victoria. Installing machine #1 this weekend — will report how it goes.
Lightroom 6.6 is painfully slow on my 27″ 2015 iMac. It takes 10-15 seconds to move from one photo to the next in the Develop module with frequent freezing. Turning video acceleration on and off did not make a difference! Searching the web showed many people reporting the very same issue with Lightroom 6.6. Please stop promoting this update as stable. I wouldn’t have installed it if it wasn’t for your recommendation. I will be rolling back to the previous release.
I’ve been running it on a 27″ iMac for weeks with no issues and I haven’t seen any of these issues reported. Please report it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family so the engineers can figure out what’s happening on your machine, and also include the links to the other people having the same problem, as they may offer vital clues. I’d have expected to hear a lot of complaints by now if it was a widespread problem, but I know that’s no consolation when you’re affected.
Oh, and what are you googling to find these reports?
I googled “Lightroom 6.6 slow” and changed the search parameters in google to only show results from last week. Here is one of the links: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2165067
Thanks. Ok, I’ve found 2 people on that thread with a performance problem new to 6.6, and I’ve found 2 other people in a couple of other Adobe forum threads. I’m not turning up much else. From that point of view, I’m reassured, because widespread problems are usually every other thread on the Adobe forums.
But that still doesn’t help you! Please do report it on the bug report forum so we can figure out what’s going on. Also, when it’s running slow, keep an eye on Activity Monitor. I did see an extremely high memory usage on a couple of occasions, which seemed to be related to sync, but we’re still investigating the cause. That did slow things down considerably until restarting, but I only saw it twice. We need to figure out what’s happening on your machine, that wasn’t happening in 6.5.
Is it me, or have Adobe considerably improved the long standing issue with Fuji X Trans sensor rendering? I’m not on my main computer at the moment, but even on my laptop, my Fuji X100t images are looking better!
They have continued to make tweaks over the past few versions, although I’m not sure there were any in this release.
Hi, I experience two problems since I updated to version 2015.6 of Lightroom CC.
1. Every photo that is synchronized to Lightroom mobile – reuploaded.
2. I take photos with a Sony A55V that has no official camera profiles support in Lightroom I use “Maurizio Piraccini Photography” camera profiles. That worked fine for about 1 year so far – but after updating to 2015.6 Lightroom doesnt let me select camera calibration profiles anymore. The camera profiles are still in the same Folder (C:\Users\Christopher\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles). But I can´t choose them in Lightroom. If I select on of the “Maurizio Piraccini Photography” camera profiles – lightroom automatically chooses the “Adobe Standard” camera profile.
Maybe the two problems are linked and Lightroom updates all the camera calibration profiles to “Adobe Standard” since it can´t find the originally selected camera calibration profile.
Anyone else experiencing similar problems? Or do you have suggenstions how to solve especially the #2?
Cheers, Chris
I’ve seen a couple of reports of synced photos reuploading, although it only seems to be affecting a few people, which is odd.
I’ve also heard a couple of reports of missing profiles – can I get you to report it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family please, so the engineers can figure out what’s wrong.
Thanks for this post. Its always daunting deciding to whether or not to buy new versions of programs and posts like this really help. Cheers.
I’ve a few issues with the new release.
I edit using smart previews only and find that after a while I need to restart Lightroom as there is a terrific lag between adjustments and the preview on screen.
The adjustment brush has a bug where if I copy and adjustment to another image and then reposition it is can and often does bomb out meaning I need to restart.
Exporting Raw files is now much quicker and my cpu gets used a lot more. I wish I could have several installs of lightroom CC. Like pushing on a string one update fixes some things and breaks others.
I still use Lightroom 5 standalone for exporting tiffs to Jpeg and once I create more than one thread LR5 is still so much quicker at doing so.
Some people are reporting very high memory usage… I’ve only seen it twice, but that could be the issue that’s affecting you too. Keep an eye on Task Manager/Activity Monitor to see how much RAM is in use when it’s going slowly.
Does LR6.6 offer a full screen when working with Smart Previews when using the F-key.
Very important because I work with a 27″ late 2015 iMac 5K.
Yes, I also have a 27″ iMac, and I just double checked the smart previews do work.
“Yes, I also have a 27? iMac, and I just double checked the smart previews do work.”
No, I have just installed LR 6.6 and for me it is not possible to see full screen after pushing the F-key.
I really need a full screen when using Smart Previews.
The reason is that the images have too few pixels for covering a high 5K resolution of the iMac.
I have tried several adjustments, but did not succeed. I hoped Adobe would tackle this in 6.6
Please give a solution what to do.
Perhaps we’re talking about different things. Which module are you in? What resolution photos are you using? Take me through your exact steps.
Yes you are talking about doing Smart Reviews in General, that’s work.
But I am talking about getting full screen WITH Smart Reviews in the Develop module. That does not work. Small image. Independent of the ratio’s: Fit, Fill or 1:1.
On the “old” Macs it worked but because of the 5K resolutions iMacs, not.
Right, now I’m with you. Yes, that’s quite specific. Make sure you report it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family
I have been thinking a lot about upgrading to CC and have searched ages for an overview like yours. Thanks so much!
I should have come here straight away, as your last months post about using lightroom catalogs on various computers had already allowed me to work way more efficient than before…
Thanks again and keep the good work up!!
You’re welcome. Check out the rest of the ‘what’s new’ section to see what else has been added along the way: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/lightroom/whatsnew/
Mac OSX full Screen issue – iMac (OS X 10.11.5) is Lightroom CC 2015.5.1 and OS X full screen works as expected, I upgraded the Macbook (OS X 10.11.5) to Lightroom 2015.6 and OS X full screen doesn’t work any more. Anyone else see this ? Is there a ‘simple’ explanation of the adobe full screen vs OS X Full Screen. Thanks
I’ve seen a bug report on that: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom-2015-6-broke-fullscreen-mode-on-mac
Thanks,,, I sure hope they bring back OS X Full Screen!!
I’m running 10.11.5 and 6.6 on a 2009 MBP 17. If you mean the “f” key for full screen, mine seems to work ok. Am I missing your point?
That one works ok. It’s the OS version of full screen that’s gone walkabout – the one you get when you press the green button in the top left corner.
If you mean the little “+” button (mine isn’t green) in the upper left corner of the LR window, clicking that expands the entire LR window to full screen on my machine, then back if I click it again. The “f” key expands just the image part of the LR window to full screen. Isn’t that the way they’re supposed to work?
This one Mike, which puts the LR window in its own ‘space’.
Yes…except mine are not colored (hmmm — mine are not colored, but have “x”, “-“, and “+” on them). But, clicking it expands the LR window to full screen — panels and all, whereas the “f” key expands just the photo to full screen. Now I wonder why I don’t have colored buttons.
They only color when I float near them. Other than that, no idea!!
Victoria,
I am using LR 6.6 CC 6 and after downloading Win 10 (free) ,if I click on Develop Module it gives me a banner which says “File not found”. If I go back to Library module everything seems fine, back to Develop error appears again. Any ideas on how to fix or where the Develop module went? -Ed
Try this Ed: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/lightroom-photos-missing-fix/
I have updated Lightroom via Adobe CC app. All went well except now I cannot access my Nik plugins. I tried to reinstall them but still no luck. Any suggestions. (Win7)
Victoria
A heads up for folk who are using Lightroom for a lot of printing. 2015.6 broke something. There’s a long discussion about this on the Adobe forum.
I just printed a test image to my Epson P800 (Mac OS10.11.5) using
LR 2016.6
LR2015.5.1
Affinity Pro 1.4.2 and
Roy Harrington’s QTR PtintTool
all through the same custom ICC profile onto Ilford Gallerie Smooth Pearl paper.
All prints are identical except that from LR 2015.6 where there is banding on smooth colour gradients and a muted appearance in highly saturated areas.
Hoping they’ll fix this. I like the upright tools!
Cheers
Tim
Sounds like you’re referring to the updated Mac OS Print API’s, which require updated printer drivers. There’s a tech note here: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/unexpected-colors-when-printing-mac.html
Hi Victoria
I saw Adobe’s note. But that’s not it.
I have the latest drivers.
The key is that with everything else the same, 3 apps, including LR 2015.5.1, work fine, but 2015.6 doesn’t. Something isn’t right.
Cheers
Tim
Make sure you report it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family, if you haven’t already, just to be sure the engineers are aware then. The old deprecated APIs were removed in 2015.6, which is likely the cause of the issue, but it’s certainly possible there’s another related issue.
Hi Victoria
You’ll have seen, I guess, that Rikk Flohr’s reponse was to reprise the same “fix that doesn’t”.
You’ve probably also seen by now too that a lot of other users are reporting the same bug in both Lr 2015.6 and PS 2015.5, with different brands and models of printers, and same no-fix by updating drivers.
Clearly there is either a bug in the new Apple APIs or in the way the new versions of LR and PS are colour-managing image data before handing off to the API, or both. Either way, it is a shame because LR is the go-to application for a lot of print workers. If, as Rikk suggests, the old, correctly working, APIs are going to be deprecated by Apple shortly, I assume R 2015.5.1 will no longer print. Where would that leave us? Having to export .tiffs to print from a well-behaved third party app is going to be a right pita.
Sigh…

Yep, I saw, but now it’s on that forum, the engineers will track it. I agree it sounds like there’s a bug somewhere, and since the suggested solution isn’t working for everyone, they’ll investigate further. Adobe have been closed this week, so I think the standard reprise was probably a “we think this should fix it” kind of solution that they didn’t have enough time to test fully, but they’ll be back in the office investigating further now.
They found the error in the printing routine’s and are expecting to release a fix next month. Yay!
I heard they’ve been able to arrange a solution with their partners! Great news Tim!
Even better. I got sent a pre-release version to test and it’s fixed. Another Yay!
It’s great to have some real world confirmation. I’ve heard back from a couple of others who have also confirmed it’s fixed too, so we can all breathe a sigh of relief.
Has the new release broken something in the auto-upright settings? I have an import preset that used to apply an auto-upright correction to each image as it was importing but now I keep having to hit the ‘update’ button for each image as I work through them in the develop module. I’ve tried updating one image and then syncing the change to others to try & force it to update all my images but it doesn’t seem to work?? Is this a new ‘feature’ or am I missing a way of getting LR to automatically update images?
Nothing that I know of, but report it at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family so it can be tested on a wider range of systems.
