AI Mask refinement (Classic & Desktop)
There are new Feather and Edge sliders to refine AI-generated masks, creating smoother transitions and precise edge adjustments.

Generative Expand (Desktop, iPhone & Android)
Generative Expand has arrived on Lightroom Desktop (not Classic) and iPhone/Android! It uses AI to extend an image beyond its original boundaries by creating realistic content to fill the expanded area. This allows you to change the composition after the photo has been taken, whether you need to adapt it to a different aspect ratio, add breathing room around the subject, or fill transparent areas created by Geometry adjustments.

Flatten AI Edits (Classic & Desktop)
The Update AI dialog now includes a new Flattened AI Edits section after using Generative Expand. But why?
For most AI edits, if a later edit invalidates an earlier one, you can simply click Update to regenerate the AI. Generative Expand works a little differently. Before it creates the new pixels, Lightroom flattens any existing AI edits into the image and uses that as the starting point for the expansion.
The advantage is that Lightroom doesn’t have to regenerate all of the AI content every time you tweak an earlier edit, helping to conserve your Generative Credits. The trade-off is that those earlier AI edits can no longer be edited individually. If you need to change one, you’ll either need to return to an earlier Version or Snapshot and redo the expansion, or remove the flattened AI edits and start again. It’s a small departure from Lightroom’s usual non-destructive workflow, but a practical compromise.

Render to DNG (Classic & Desktop)
If you right-click on a photo, there’s a new Render to DNG option. This creates a new file with all of your current edits baked in and places it alongside the original photo. Beware! Despite the DNG extension, the new file is not a raw file. It’s a TIFF in a DNG wrapper. The main advantage is that it’s considerably smaller than an equivalent TIFF, but it has the same limitations as any other rendered file. For example, you can no longer recover additional highlight or shadow detail from the original raw data.
It’s primarily designed for features like Generative Expand. For example, if you’ve cropped away distracting objects around the edge of a photo, you can choose Render to DNG and then use Generative Expand to extend the newly cropped composition.
Crop Improvements (Classic)
There are some useful little changes in the Crop tool. Rotate and Flip are now recorded in the History panel. You may ask, “surely the correct orientation is obvious?”, and for a normal subject, that’s true. But if you’re photographing the night sky, you try to figure out which way is up!
Two new menu commands have appeared in the Photo menu, with very self-explanatory names: Reset to Camera Orientation and Restore Orientation from Metadata.
While in the Crop tool, you can also now right-click and under Crop Mask, select 100%, 80%, 50%, 20%, or Off. No more having to go into Lights Out mode to hide distractions!
Crop Panel Updates (Desktop, iPhone & Android)
With the introduction of Generative Expand, the Crop panel has been renamed to Crop & Expand, and the Constrain Crop for Transparency button has moved from the Geometry panel to the top of the Crop panel.

In-App lrcat-data Recovery (Classic)
The *.lrcat-data folder/file next to your catalog’s *.lrcat is an essential part of your catalog. It contains a variety of pixel-based data, including AI masks, Generative Remove repairs, and Denoise/Super Resolution data. If that data is deleted, Lightroom must regenerate it, and the results can be quite different, especially for Generative AI.
This data store can become corrupted, just like the catalog itself. Usually, this is due to storing the catalog in a cloud sync folder (such as OneDrive, iCloud, or Dropbox), but it can also be caused by third-party plug-ins that update its contents or by an abnormal program exit (e.g., if you force-quit).
Lightroom now checks the lrcat-data content on startup and, if any corruption is found, offers to attempt repair. During the repair, it takes a backup of the existing lrcat-data and then offers to delete it once recovery completes successfully.

Photo to Video (iOS & Android)
To add some movement to a photo, there’s a new Animate tool that creates a short video clip, a little like a Live Photo (iOS) / Motion Photo (Android). Like many third-party AI models, Animate costs Generative Credits, with the number required shown beneath the button. The results can be surprisingly interesting. In my tests, it added movement to the water in the foreground of one photo, slowly zoomed in on a panoramic image, and made the clouds drift across the sky in another.

Denoise (iPad)
Denoise is now available on the iPad! You’ll need an iPad Pro or iPad Air with an M1 chip or later. The standard iPad and iPad mini won’t work, as they use Apple’s A-series chips. You’ll find the switch in the Detail panel, just like it is on the desktop, although it will obviously be a bit slower.

How do I update?
To update on the desktop, go to Help menu > Updates or click the Update button in the CC app. The update servers take a while to push the updates around the world to avoid overloading the servers. You can also open the Creative Cloud app, click the … icon (top right), and select Check for Updates to give it a nudge. To update on mobile, visit the App Store (iOS) / Play Store (Android).
Are the books updated?

Are the books updated?
Has anyone dared trying MacOS 27.0 and Lightroom yet? If so, any odd behaviours noticed?
That’s a great question. Paul usually does a blog post about that, but he’s on holiday this week, and I totally forgot! I haven’t seen any issues, but it won’t be officially supported at least until the next release. In most cases, it’s driver incompatibilities that cause trouble, rather than Lightroom itself.
Here we are!

I’ve been waiting for fixes for what feels like ages as I read somewhere that 15.5.1 only fixed bugs discovered by Adobe and none of the ones reported by users so have been holding off on updating to 15.5.x. Is it possible that I was wrong and that (any of) the bugs listed here were fixed in 15.5.1?
You read correctly… 15.5.1 was mainly to comply with the Content Creditials related legislation. Most of the bugs listed above are intermittent and difficult to replicate so probably won’t affect you, but the skipping exports one is probably irritating enough to hold off a bit longer. It was a small release so you’re not missing out on massive game changer features. With the release of new iPhones this week, I would be surprised if there wasn’t a release in the next few weeks.
Thank you, Victoria. I realize that it was perhaps unclear that I’m still on 15.4.1 (and would like to take part of the mask refinements in 15.5, that seem quite useful), but have waited to get the wrinkles straightened out. My patience has been thinning slowly though, so knowing that there’s a good chance that I won’t be affected by the bugs listed above will likely push me to take on the update. 🙂
Ah, that makes more sense. The nice thing is, because it doesn’t need a catalog upgrade, you can easily go back to 15.4.1 if one of the bugs does turn out to mess up your workflow. Hopefully they won’t!
Thank you, Victoria! 😊
I am still holding off moving to LrC 15.5 as I don’t really want to encounter some of the reported bugs. It will soon be 6 weeks with no 15.5.1 version – do those with ears closer to the ground (or to Adobe) than me have any information about how much longer the next release might be please? Many thanks, Paul
There is a 15.5.1; go to your CC App to look for it. It was primarily bug fixes.
Many thanks Paul. Not sure how I missed that: I must pay more attention in class. I must pay more attention in class. etc…!
It’s easily done Paul! We don’t usually worry about a blog post for a double-dot as they don’t have any new features, but we do try to update the main blog post when one is released, just in case someone has auto updates disabled.
Since my last update to LrC, Everything as Frozen the page shows, i Cant upload any Images, ?
Hi Graham
We need a bit more information to try to help. I’d suggest dropping onto our Forums and posting this, with more details on what you’re actually seeing and when.
Finally mask feather and edge!!! Updating my lightroom in 3..2…1….
I dunno if it’s just me but the stability/performance since upgrading has been destructive to my experience.
I cant think of anything else that could be affecting it.
It seems to be when I get into pasting edits number of times in.
I also see this full (where the image is loading) yellow fill that happens occasionally when cycling images.
this is on a MacBook Pro M2 Pro 16Gig 1TB with the catalog and source files on a 1000/1000mbs SSD with 200+ gig free.
It’s not something we’re hearing lots about; to test if it’s 15.5 causing, try rolling back to 15.4:

June’s masking update in LrC was a game changer. The refinement tools sweetened it.
No bi-directional graduated masks yet … or what is it called in ACR ?
Often, new features are incorporated in ACR in advance of making it to the Lightroom family (hence the more frequent releases of ACR). Most come to Lightroom, so it’s a case of waiting at the moment.
I’m confused. You say, “ Flatten AI Edits (Classic & Desktop) The Update AI dialog now includes a new Flattened AI Edits section after using Generative Expand. “. However, right above it, you say ‘Generative Expand’ is not in Classic?….and why is it not in Classic?
Flatten AI Edits is in Classic in order to support Generative Expand edits, as you might have used it in Camera Raw or Lightroom Desktop/iPhone. Generative Expand hasn’t made it into Classic yet, but will hopefully arrive at some point. Each team has its own priorities, so sometimes features don’t make it into all versions at the same time.
I noticed that as well but scrolled down and sure enough there was an answer. I expect Generative Expand may be more complex due to the catalogue, but I’m just guessing.
