Lightroom Classic 14.0, Lightroom Desktop 8.0, and Lightroom Mobile 10.0 have all been released today. As Lightroom is subscription software, this isn’t a “big release” in the conventional sense. Adobe tends to update the main version number annually around the time of Adobe Max, and this year is no exception. Of course, new features have been released every few months, rather than having to wait for a single x.0 release.

In the last year, we’ve had (only main points listed):
Lightroom Classic, Mobile & Desktop:
- 13.1 (December 2023) – Added ITPC fields (Classic) and multiple bug fixes.
- 13.2 (February 2024) – Additional Filter & Sort Options, Flags written to XMP, Nikon Pixel Shift (All Classic).
- 13.3 (May 2024) – Healing became Remove Tools, with AI Remove added. Lens Blur is no longer Early Access. With Classic, a major Sync upgrade (requiring a Catalog Upgrade).
- 13.4 (June 2024) – Bug fixes and new lenses.
- 13.5 (August 2024) – (Classic) Updates to Sync Workflow, HDR support in Library, Edit in Ps Beta support.
- Numerous mobile and Lightroom Cloud-based improvements, as well as smaller features.
As many Develop/Edit features apply to all of the different app versions, we’ve continued to merge all of the updates into a single post, so here’s a quick reminder of what the different app versions are officially called…
New bugs…
Classic – Subject Masks from previous versions are requesting an update (workaround – restart LR)– fixed in 14.0.1 (October 16)Classic – Unable to export some images that have smart proxy available– fixed in 14.0.1 (October 16)Classic – Incorrect shortcuts in Remove tool help for Increase/Decrease Brush Size/Feather– fixed in 14.0.1 (October 16)
Important note for Classic: This release upgrades your catalog format, so just be aware that you can’t easily roll back to 13.x. You may decide to hold off updating to 14.0 until more general feedback is received.
System Requirements
The minimum system requirements for Lightroom Classic 14.0 and Lightroom Desktop 8.0 have been updated:
- Windows 10 v22H2 or later, or Windows 11 v22H2 or later.
- macOS now requires macOS 13.1 (Ventura) or later.
- Lightroom Classic 14.0 and Lightroom Desktop 8.0 are supported on macOS 15 (Sequoia) – but check our blog for further details as there are some macOS Sequoia bugs that affect Lightroom users.
Preview Management (Classic)
Are your Lightroom Previews taking up too much space? While you can discard 1:1 Previews after x days, until now there was no way to limit the Standard Previews. As so many people now have 4k and 5k screens, even Standard Previews can take up enormous amounts of space. Of course, for speed in the Library module it’s ideal to keep as many Standard Previews as possible.
In this release, there is a new option in the Catalog Settings dialog called Limit Preview Cache Size. This is a really helpful development! If you are short on space and can’t move the catalog and all its associated files to another drive (ideally SSD), it allows you to set the maximum amount of space you want to assign to Lightroom’s rendered previews, and Lightroom will do its best to stick to it.
Smart Albums (Desktop)
For some, the biggest news in this release… you can now save searches as Smart Albums on Lightroom desktop! Photos automatically appear in the Smart Album when they meet the criteria you set. For example, if you rate your best ever photos with 5 stars, and create a Smart Album with that criteria, it will automatically update as you rate additional photos with 5 stars. Unlike the Refine Filters and Search fields, you can choose whether to do an AND or an OR search. For example, find all photos that have both Charlie and Khush, or all photos that have either of them.
Edit in Third-Party Apps (Desktop)
As well as Photoshop, Desktop can now open photos in other editing apps.
To open a photo in another editor, go to File menu (or right- click menu) > Edit in > Browse, then navigate to the app’s .exe file (Windows) / application (Mac). The last five apps are remembered, so you can just select them from the list next time.
Quick Actions (mobile & web)
As the name suggests, Quick Actions uses AI to help you quickly enhance subjects, blur backgrounds, retouch portraits, and make other edits based on the content of the selected photo. They’re shortcuts to existing tools to save you hopping around the different panels. It’s currently an Early Access tool on iPhone, Android, and Web, which means it’s a work-in-progress, and Adobe would love to hear what you think.
Presets (Desktop)
There are a few changes to presets on the desktop:
- The panel is now accessible in Grid view, which means you can now apply presets to multiple photos in one go!
- In Detail view, the Preset panel can now show presets as thumbnails.
- You can now mark presets as favorites by clicking the star icon. These presets show in the Favorites folder at the top of the Yours tab. You can’t currently set favorites on mobile or web, but the Favorites folder does sync from the desktop.
Generative Remove (All)
Generative Remove is now out of Early Access, and there have been several improvements to the Remove workflow.
On mobile, the main change is that Detect Objects has been added (previously called Object Aware on Desktop).
On Classic & Desktop, the user interface for the Remove tool has been updated, resulting in a few workflow changes:
- The initial Remove panel view has been simplified in Remove mode and Heal/Clone modes.
- In Remove mode, the look of the Mask Refinement panel has been updated slightly, but the functionality remains the same.
- There’s a new Selected subpanel that allows you to edit or delete the selected repair.
- Object Aware mode has been renamed to Detect Objects. When Detect Objects is checked, you can now draw a rough circle around the object you want to select rather than painting more carefully around the object’s edge.
- Generative AI now automatically generates new variations when using Copy/Paste.
If you’re not getting the results you expect from Generative Remove, check our blog post Why does Lightroom’s Generative AI keep replacing objects instead of removing them?

Denoise Support (Classic & Desktop)
Denoise now supports linear raw file formats, including Apple ProRaw and Samsung ExpertRaw formats, sRAW and other reduced-dimension raw files, and files created by Merge to HDR and Merge to Panorama.
Apple Neural Engine support was added in 13.3, improving Denoise speeds on Silicon Macs. However, it’s been disabled again for now due to bugs in the engine that were causing quality issues.
Content Authenticity (All)
Already available on Lightroom Desktop (now moved from Tech Preview to Early Access), Content Credentials are now available on Classic and Mobile. The Content Authenticity Initiative is a large group of industry leaders working together to fight misinformation by adding verifiable, tamper-evident signatures to images. This allows anyone to trace the history of an image, including how it’s been edited, to help verify its authenticity. You can learn more about it at https://contentauthenticity.org
In Lightroom Classic, to include Content Credentials when exporting, set the file format to JPEG and set the Content Credentials pop-up to something other than Don’t Include.
In Lightroom Ecosystem, set the options in Preferences and then enable Content Credentials when exporting.
Filmstrip Badges (Desktop)
Stars and flags can now be viewed on thumbnails in the filmstrip.
HDR Improvements (All)
In Classic, there’s now a really handy new shortcut (Shift-H) to enable/disable HDR editing mode, and HDR now displays in the secondary window as long as Preferences > Performance tab > Enable HDR in Library is checked. The upcoming ISO 21496-1 standard gain map is now supported when exporting to JPG, JXL, AVIF, or TIFF formats. Gain maps provide information to software (e.g., a web browser) on how to optimally display the image on SDR and HDR screens.
In Desktop, Photos now show as HDR in the Merge to HDR and Merge to HDR/Pano dialogs.
On iOS and Desktop, videos captured in HDR are now played and exported in HDR.
Provide Feedback (Classic)
If you think you’ve found a bug, posting it on the Adobe forum is a good way to get it verified by others and reported to Adobe. We’ve written instructions here: How do I send a bug report or feature request to Adobe?
But if you’re convinced you’ve found a legitimate bug and want to send it to Adobe without any two-way dialog, there’s a new Help menu > Provide Feedback menu command, which sends your comments directly to Adobe.
Catalog Upgrade (Classic)
When you open Lightroom 14.0 for the first time, it automatically finds your default Lightroom catalog and asks for permission to upgrade it.
This release changes the upgrade process.
Previously, it created a copy of the catalog, renamed it using the name you chose in the upgrade dialog, and left the older catalog in the same folder.
From this release onwards, permission is still required to upgrade the catalog, but the following steps are slightly different:
- Lightroom asks for permission to upgrade the catalog, as it did before. If you don’t agree to it, you can’t use version 14, so say yes!
- Lightroom creates a subfolder called Old Lightroom Catalogs and saves a backup of the old catalog in this folder. The backup zip is renamed to add the date and time of creation.
- Lightroom upgrades the main working catalog without renaming it. This should prevent the catalog names from getting longer with each upgrade. (Due to the old renaming, many people currently have catalogs with names like Lightroom Catalog-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-v10-v11-v12- v13-v13-3.lrcat, but see renaming below)
- Lightroom opens the upgraded catalog.
If you need to roll back to the previous Lightroom version because of a workflow-busting bug, the restoration process has also changed slightly. Previously, you’d roll back the software, rename the previews to match the old catalog name, and double-click on the previous version’s catalog. Now you need to:
- Move the current *.lrcat and *.lrcat- data files to another location (perhaps a subfolder).
- Delete the * Helper.lrdata file (this is just a performance cache for the catalog).
- Use the Creative Cloud app to install the previous version (e.g., 13.5), see rolling the version back.
- Find the pre-upgrade catalog in the Old Lightroom Catalogs subfolder and unzip it.
- Move it back into the main catalog folder alongside the existing Previews.lrdata and other related files.
- Double-click to open it.
- Go to Preferences > General > Default Catalog pop-up and ensure it’s set to Most Recent or the specific catalog of your choice.
For more details on catalog upgrades, see our blog post Why is Lightroom asking to upgrade my catalog and what does it do?
Renaming a Catalog (Classic)
Previously, to rename a catalog, you had to find it in Explorer (Windows) / Finder (Mac), quit Lightroom, and rename all of the individual files. As the number of files associated with each catalog has grown, this has become a bigger job, and it’s easy to make mistakes.
Lightroom now has a File menu > Rename Catalog command, where you can simply enter the new catalog name, and Lightroom will rename all of the files for you. If you like the catalog’s parent folder to match the catalog name, Lightroom can rename it at the same time.
It is smart enough to automatically update the default catalog path if Preferences are set to open a named catalog during startup. It also updates the backup path if the Backups folder is in the same location (although Where should I put my backups? shows why you probably want the backups in a different location).
Other New Features
- Classic
- It’s now possible to Delete All Empty Masks from multiple selected photos at once using Grid view > Photo menu > Develop Settings, Develop module > Develop menu > Settings, or via the right-click menu > Settings.
- Performance improvements focused on image-switching speed in the Library module when Preferences > Performance tab > Enable HDR in Library is checked, and image-switching speed in Develop module.
- Desktop
- When adding stars or flags, you can automatically move to the next photo by enabling Photo menu > Auto Advance or turning on the Caps Lock key.
- iOS
- Swiping through photos in the Device Detail view is now the default behavior and no longer requires the Tech Preview.
- Android
- Presets containing AI masks now automatically update when applying. (This was already available on other platforms).

How do I update?
To update on the desktop, go to Help menu > Updates or click the Update button in the CC app. The update servers take a while to push the updates around the world to avoid overloading the servers. You can also open the Creative Cloud app, click the … icon (top right), and select Check for Updates to give it a nudge. To update on mobile, visit the App Store (iOS) / Play Store (Android).
For Lightroom Classic, this release upgrades your catalog format, so just be aware that you can’t easily roll back to 13.5. You may decide to hold off updating to 14.0 until more general feedback is received.
See our instructions above for handling the changed Catalog upgrade.

Hi, I’m a bit confused by one of the links in the Bugs Fixed section above.
‘[Classic] (Windows) Crash ( 8880582 )’ links to:
https://adobe.prf.hn/click/camref:1011lrifT/destination:https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-windows-crash-8880582/idi-p/14158299
But that has a pinned comment dated 4 January 2024 saying:
Original poster reports as fixed.
The Adobe What’s New page – https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/lightroom-classic/kb/fixed-issues.html?sdid=4SC98Y6L&mv=sociall – instead links to the following issue under ‘Windows Crash fixed’
https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-performance-slow-on-large-catalog-540k-images-crash-9690382/idi-p/14868732
Thanks for the heads up. I think the early access list we were given must have included the wrong link. I’ll get that updated.
Are there any issues usingh the latest LR Classic with Mac Sequoia 15.1.1?
Nothing of note.
Overall, the LRC upgrade has been meh. I have folders of images now showing as empty when they were imported and showing my old catalog (thanks to sync issues, it was from v.13.2). When I try to sync the folder and checking “show import dialog”, LRC v14.0 locks up and crashes. I’ve been able to replicate it multiple times to the point I got a screen recording of the process showing the LRC version used, steps taken, etc. Thoughts? I know I’m on the last iMac with Intel (late 2020), but I feel this is a LRC issue since it was working properly in 13.2.
Folders appearing empty sound like an issue with the update of the catalog.
Drop onto our Forums so we can ask questions and investigate further with you.
I’d also wonder if there are videos in the folder. We’ve had a few reports of people on slightly older machines that are having issues importing videos.
Does it seem like the newest version of LR 14 is OK to now?
Looking pretty solid to me. The notable bugs were fixed with 14.0.1.
Big Time Security Issue on LrC 14.x ?
I run Little Snitch on my Mac (outgoing app Firewall so I get notified by the Firewall when any app tries to access any internet domain it does not have permission for.
On updating to LrC 14.0.1 (having skipped 14.0.0) it seems LrC was scanning my e-mail and trying to access every domain I have e-mails from (in the built-in Apple Mail).
Why was it scanning my e-mail folders as LrC has nothing to do withn email?
(I have some screenshots of a sample of the firewall “Is trying to access … Deny/Allow” but can’t see any way to upload to this section).
Odd. I’d report that to Adobe so they can look into it. I’d guess that their first question might be whether you have LR’s Email set up to use Apple Mail, as that would give them somewhere to start looking. Here’s instructions on how to report it to Adobe: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/send-bug-report-feature-request-adobe/
I wasn’t even aware you could set Lightroom to use Apple Mail (or any mail client).
Reported but moderator immediately SPAM’d it then moved it to discussions so it’s ignored by Adobe!
Don’t worry, that’s their normal process. Issues go into discussions until they’ve been reproduced and verified, but a staff member reads everything. You could report it through the new Help menu > Send Feedback as well, to ensure a second person reads it.

Hi, there is a bug in LrC 14.0.1 with a crop tool (MacOs 14.5, M2Max, 64 RAM). If I use crop tool on one photo and move to another photo and again use the crop tool – in that moment the previous photo “blink” on the screen for a sec. After that the crop is ready to be used for the correct photo. It is just annoying. 🙁
I’ve seen that in the past. Do you see the same if you turn GPU off in Preferences? (Not suggesting that you should leave it off, but it gives a clue as to the cause).
Hi Victoria. You are right – if I turn off GPU in Pref, it is ok. But for me it is not the way how I would like to deal with that problem. A have Apple M2Max specially for Lightroom everyday heavy use, not to have M2Max off. And the GPU was working smoothly in LrC 13.x.x. So for me it is just a LrC bug, not an acceptable solution.
Victoria didn’t intend for it to be a permanent solution, just to identify where the likely issue is.
Here’s instructions on how to report it to Adobe: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/send-bug-report-feature-request-adobe/
I’m experiencing the same issue after upgrading to the latest build earlier this week. It is very distracting and annoying. Did you report it?
I have seen a report on that yes.
In Photoshop I did a remove distractions on auto, it left a hand behind and I tried to remove it using the remove tool, photoshop said an error had occueed then the computer blue screened and restarted.
A blue screen is generally triggered by a hardware or low-level driver issue, so my best guess is that Photoshop’s triggering a bug in the graphics driver. I’d check the manufacturer’s website for an updated driver, and if you then see it again, report it to Adobe.
Finally Nikon tether on Apple Silicon!! Made my day 😀
Reports from Nikon users are very favorable, too!
The “limit preview cache size” is a great feature as I currently have just 1TB main SSD and Lightroom currently uses around 450GB if it. I therefore set a way smaller value like 120GB with should free a considerable amount of space on my main SSD.
However it’s absolutely not clear for me how this really works as I set that limit and confirmed the message that Previews will soon be deleted as my limit is smaller than the current size of previews.
What does this mean in reality? When will LR do it’s job as for now nothing happened and not a single GB has been deleted.
Also the additional information provided by Adobe does not really contains clear facts. Will this deletion happen while LR is running (or while LR is not running?). For now I tried to start LR and just keep it open as I think that this would be the mode for the deletion to be triggered (but so far nothing happened)
It should plod away as a background process when Lightroom is open. That said, I suspect there might be a bug or two…
I just updated Lightroom for the first time today to version 14, so I received the 14.0.1 release. Nonetheless, I’m still seeing a masking red dot on some images. However, going through the individual masks doesn’t show any masks that need an update. So maybe this issue isn’t completely fixed yet? Or possibly I’m missing something?
I posted this comment in the Adobe forum also.
What happens if you do Update AI Settings without manually checking the masks?
I didn’t see a way to globally update the AI masks. It was necessary to update each generated mask (subject, object, and so on) individually. The mask and mask settings seem to be intact. I’m just updating as I come across them. From one of the responses in the Adobe Community, it appears that this is normal behavior if there is a new AI Model/Version in LrC. Thank you for the response.
Should you need to do so again, Settings menu > Update AI Settings should let you do all the masks in one go, and if you trigger it from the Grid view > right click menu, you can do multiple photos at once. That said, you shouldn’t need to do that.
I wasn’t aware of that setting but found it in Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings. Thank you again.
Updated to LrC 14.0 (Help-About- shows V.14). Upgraded also catalog V 13.3.
After the update of the catalog the names of the catalog and other files are still “LightRoom_Catalog-v13-3.lrcat” . A subfolder with a backup of the catalog is made.
But I can open this catalog with LrC 14.0… no problem so far
On top-left of the screen LrC shows also Lightroom _13.3 etc.
Strange or… how fo fix this
See the notes above in the blog. The catalog name no longer changes, so what you see is just as expected. But note the way to rename the catalog (that has changed).
Thanks,
I completely overlooked it…
Henri
We did write a long post!!!
I never had any issues with getting rid of an old catalogue and components after an upgrade. I always kept the old catalogue and especially the components around in on file on the desktop for several days to be sure. It is nice very nice LrC packs it away for you. I like the renaming feature as well.
Compliments to Victoria and all who help post this Blog note. It is really super to have such a quality and well presented update.
Thank you Matt
LR 13.5.1 classic user.
Creative Cloud is telling me that LR14 is not compatible with my Mac. If there has been no new major upgrades, why is the minimum requirement OS Ventura?
Yes, I am on an old Mac, running OS Monterey and can’t upgrade.
Each additional operating system version increases the testing costs, so Adobe’s general policy is to support three major versions of each operating system. Apple just introduced Sequoia, so the 4-year-old Monterey drops off the supported list, I’m afraid.
As a classic user that moved to cloud, I was happy to finally see smart albums on the cloud side. But alas, it doesn’t seem to be fully functional yet. Adobe’s release notes clearly show the ability to make more complex searches, but all I can actually create are collections of “[field] includes [value]” pairs where they all have to be true. Adobe’s screen shots imply that there’s supposed to be a drop-down for the “includes” part in the middle, but it’s not showing up for me. 🙁
Good spot. I’ve alerted Adobe as I suspect the screenshot was taken from an experimental build. There is a pop-up for the Capture Date one, but not some of the others shown there.
It would have been nice to have something like Jeffrey Friedl’s “Folder Publisher” built in. It gives others a chance to see your finished photos without having to go through lightroom.
There are some good addtions in this release, removing cables and people is great.
That must be a big debate when the product managers are choosing their priorities… if there’s already a plug-in that does the job, should they spend the engineering time to build it in, or should they spend it on other features that plug-in developers can’t control?
It does the job but to be honest it is a bit of a faf, you have to run it and it takes ages, hours in my case, it would be ideal if each time you stopped changing a photo it updated, but it has to be started manually.
I haven’t tested that one in a few years, but if I remember rightly, it uses Publish Services. That means it should only need to publish files that have changed (which would be in the Files to Republish section), so I wouldn’t expect it to take hours on subsequent runs. It might be worth a forum thread to see if others can reproduce the issues you’re seeing.
Thanks I will try that.
The catalog backups that occur when exiting LrC fail unless I give “everyone” R&W permission.
In the Adobe forums, it seems that just closing and reopening LrC fixes the issue.
Thank you! This comment saved me a lot of time and frustration!
Thanks for sharing Greg.
My edited images suddenly have completely different colors, much softer, less contrast, saturation, etc. compared to the images from version 13.5. Is anyone else experiencing this?
That sounds very odd Thomas. We’d be happy to help you troubleshoot on our forum, or you could post it on Adobe’s forum.
Thank you very much, Victoria. 🙂 I will do that.
Apparently, many masks require manual updating after the upgrade. It’s a major error in the release.
Thanks for the heads up, I’ve added it to the bugs note. There seems to be a simple workaround – just restart LR after the upgrade process completes.
An uninspiring release. I’m not chafing at the bit to upgrade. There are far more practical usability improvements that could be made to this application which Adobe has been aware of for ages and does nothing about. Several that come immediately to mind: (1) Detachable menus for both sides of the interface, allowing one to configure the workspace the way one wants – like Capture One allows. We now have to scroll up and down – a complete frustrating waste of time. (2) A more distinct grid for placing photos in the custom layout preview of the Print module. The lines are too feint and the shading difference between inch and quarter inch line units is too weak. (3) The Book module should allow for vertical type in order to create different kinds of cover layouts; in general the placement and sizing of type in the Book module is dreadful, especially when settings don’t stick. (4) The file dimension limit is too small for making large panoramas – should be increased. (5) The panorama stitching algorithms need work because they mess with exposure and sometimes with alignment and perspective for no obvious reason. (6) Luminance range masking too easily creates banding/discontinuity, to the point that it’s of very limited usefulness. One could go on. Any or all of the above to my mind are more important than any of the new upgraded features, nor is awareness of any of it new to Adobe.
I agree 1000%. We need usability improvements in the Library, Slideshow, Print modules. Please devote 5 or 10% of next release budget finishing these key modules . Also, when can we create our own custom menus or panel of frequently used commands, as icons, so we do not have to take our hands away from the mouse when we need 2 hands for so many shortcuts. I also could list lots of other stuff.
As a LRC main user (since beta) I am fairly depressed regarding this release. I feel the items referenced are deserving of a point release…. not a major release. Also, for the first time since the launch of the Lr subscription model… I feel trapped. !!! Maybe I will find some gems in the detail …
Major releases don’t generally tie up with x.0 version numbers anymore. Things are shipped as soon as they’re ready enough, so May was the big release this year. If you take a peak at the Camera Raw release’s Tech Previews, you’ll get a clue of what’s coming down the pipeline… there’s some exciting stuff in the works.
I see so many places where the user experience can be improved… but constantly disappointed these small but important items do not get attention. I will look at the Camera Raw Tech Previews…. but it is in the Library, Slide Show and Print modules I wish to see improvements, especially as most of this stuff does not exist in LrCloud/Web based apps.
I recall not getting major updates with x.0 versions in the past. On other forums it gave the people the didn’t like Adobe ammo. Adobe Denoise AI (v12.3) and Generative AI (v13.3) were mid year releases. With perpetual licence apps you have to wait until the fall upgrade cycle and pay to get updates if you want them.
Everyone (including me) hopes they get improvements in areas that are important to them. Won’t happen every time.
The removal of Neural Engine support for Denoise is very disappointing. I hope that Apple can figure this out.
Upgraded to LrC 14. I have not noticed any issues. PS 26 as well but I don’t use it much.
I can’t believe Adobe missed this opportunity to release a Windows ARM compatible version of LrC! Even if it has to run through the Prism emulator. It really is very frustrating.
That one’s frustrating us, too, Richard! That said, that kind of thing doesn’t have to be tied to an x.0 release anymore, so it could come in any dot release.
To make it more frustrating . In North America, LrC is available for installation via emulation but not for the rest of the world.
There are non userfriendly workarounds. But my suggestion is to go upvote “Need Native Support for WOS/CoPilot/ARM Devices” on adobe community forums.
You’re correct, Dave, and it’s frustrating for non-NA Residents not to be able to install LrC on Windows running on ARM (Emulation, as you mention)
