Yesterday Apple released OS 10.9 Mavericks at a great price – it’s free! But is it compatible with Lightroom? Yes!
Lightroom 5.2 has already been tested and updated for Mavericks, although it’s always possible that additional bugs will be found once more people are using it.
Earlier versions should work, although there are a couple of known issues:
The sliders look wrong!
In earlier versions of Lightroom, the sliders render slightly different and the colored white balance sliders don’t show their colors correctly (shown in the first screenshot). That’s fixed in Lightroom 5.2 (second screenshot) and doesn’t affect usability in earlier versions.
“Lightroom can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”
If you’ve used 10.7 or later, you may have seen this unidentified developer error message before. New software should be signed by the developer, but you can still install older software by right-clicking (Ctrl-clicking) on the application and selecting Open from the menu. That shows the same dialog, but this time with Open and Cancel buttons. The Open button bypasses the checks and runs the installer.
Update 5 November 2013 – Missing Metadata Filter Counts
One new bug that’s been found in 5.2 on Mavericks – the image counts in the Metadata Filters are currently missing. Adobe are aware of it, so hopefully it’ll be fixed in 5.3.
Other Adobe Software
If you run Creative Cloud, you may receive an “Incompatible Software” error message when upgrading to Mavericks, quitting the Creative Cloud app and restarting from the Applications folder or Launchpad should solve it. There’s an official technote on the subject.
Flash Player may need you to remove the sandbox limitations, using the instructions in this technote.
After Effects needs an update in order to run, and the CS6 and CC links are on this blog post.
And finally, Safari may block the first attempt to open PDFs using Adobe Reader, and again, there’s an official technote.
That’s it for now! Everything’s looking pretty stable, although I’ll leave my production machine for a couple of weeks to be on the safe side. The ePub versions of my books look great in iBooks too – love that Seravek font!
Have you installed it yet or are you waiting?
Fox says
With the new Ios I cant export any photo’s from LR4, does any one have a solution exept upgrading to LR5? Thanks
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Fox. Do you mean OS X Yosemite? (iOS is for iPhones and iPads). LR4’s exports are still working in Yosemite. What kind of error message are you getting?
Fox says
Thank you for your reply Victoria. The problem seems that the update on my IMac blocks my HDD from subscribing
Victoria Bampton says
Blocks your hard drive from subscribing to what?
Jane says
Hi, I have a new Mac with OS X 10.9 and LR5 installed . When importing images it crashes and the rainbow wheel appears and the Mac becomes unresponsive. Or it just crashes full stop. It’s like a bad marriage.
Anyone got a solution?
Victoria Bampton says
Is it importing from a specific location? Does it get as far as showing the import dialog?
My initial thought, if it’s causing crashes and hangs, is there could be a hardware problem. Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test? You hold down the D key while rebooting.
Kim says
Hi, I’ve just upgraded my 5 yr old macbook pro to a 2013 macbook pro with OS X Mavericks. I reinstalled Lightroom 5.3 and on import it is saying that the files cannot be read and therefore not able to download. There is all of 12 CR2 files. Nothing major! I tried to import on my old laptop which currently has LR 5.2 and it imported no problem at all. Any ideas? I checked on the Adobe info and they say nothing about my camera (Canon 6D) having any issues. Thanks!
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Kim, check the folder permissions for the destination folder/drive. That “can’t be read” error more often means can’t be written. Often happens just after an OS upgrade, for some unknown reason.
Alex says
Is there already an solution for the import problem in LR 5 in combination with OSX Mavericks? The program work very well except the import function. I don’t have connected a second screen, iPhone or whatsoever. Thanks in advance
Victoria Bampton says
What kind of problem are you having with import Alex?
Alex says
LR5 hangs when you try to import something. Regardless of the type of file or the number of them.
Victoria Bampton says
Check you don’t have phones or other similar devices attached. That’s the usual cause of import issues.
Alex says
My magic mouse was connected so I disconnected the magic mouse and my wifi connection, guess what, the import function works again. Strange but effective.
Alex says
Disconnecting from the internet is important! I am using the macbook air 2013.
Alex says
With very large numbers (1000 images or so) LR5 hangs again.
Victoria Bampton says
Odd, I can’t reproduce it. Is this importing from a card reader, camera cable or hard drive?
Victoria Bampton says
Very odd! But great news! Perhaps there was a network drive or internet drive like JungleDisk mounted?
Paul says
Did you ever get an answer? I have the same problem. No phones or similar devices are connected. It just hangs after I click import, beachball for a while and then “lightroom has quit unexpectedly”. I am importing some photos and some videos from my 5D mark2. To check that is wasnt the card reader, i copied the folder to my desktop, but it doesn’t help; same problem still.
Victoria Bampton says
I’ve heard a few reports relating to videos being imported at the same time – what happens if you exclude the videos?
steve says
I’m having a weird issue with my StylusPro 4900 + Mavericks/Lightroom
My prints keep coming out 1/3rd their normal size.
I spent the day troubleshooting and no luck
Using LR4 ad now CC LR + Installed all the updates.
Uninstalled old the old drivers and reinstalled new.
Restarted several times.
Cleaned up the OSX stuff and more .
I have been using Epson’s for over 10 years but have never run into an issue like this.
I’d appreciate any ideas or help!
Nick Miners says
On LR5.2, with a MacBook Pro connected to a Thunderbolt display, the ‘secondary display’ in LR used (pre-Mavericks) to appear on my laptop screen, now it appears as an overlay on my main monitor, meaning I can no longer use both displays in LR. Has this been raised as an issue that you know of?
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Nick. I haven’t heard any reports like that. Is the secondary display set to full screen mode? It defaults to the ‘second monitor’ so where’s your menubar? Or do you have Sys Prefs > Mission Control > Displays have separate spaces checked? Perhaps Lightroom no longer knows which is the second monitor.
Nick Miners says
Thanks Victoria – I wasn’t aware of that setting! I’ve unchecked it and it now seems to be working again.
Victoria Bampton says
Excellent, thanks for the update. It might be worth adding to this bug report as it sounds like it’s related: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/l_button_lr5_mavericks)
Maren says
Does anyone else have problems entering keywords since the Mavericks upgrade?
I upgraded my LR5 to 5.2 which fortunately fixed the bug with the decoloured sliders.
But what really annoys me is that when I want to enter a keyword in the keywording panel it “freezes” for a second befor the autocomplete starts.
Victoria Bampton says
I’m running 5.3 RC and it’s instant here Maren, so that would be worth a shot.
Rob O says
LR5.2 on Mavericks (2012 27″ iMac) … Metadata filters no longer work. Metadata for individual images exists, as displayed in the side panel when in Library module, but when wanting to filter — say, for only Portrait orientation images — none of the attributes display. Instead it shows “All (0 [whatever attribute])”. This is for any metadata, be it Camera, Lens, Orientation, Aperture, etc. The only thing that works is Keyword (based on keywords I’ve entered). Sucks because my export workflow depends on filtering by orientation (for sizing during Export function).
Rob O says
Sorry … “Orientation” = Aspect Ratio in LR jargon.
Also, meant to mention my workaround which is to Sort by Aspect Ratio then shift-click selections before exporting. Clunkier, but better than wading through images when you have hundreds in a collection.
Victoria Bampton says
It’s been reported and verified, and hopefully should be fixed in the next release.
Olaf says
Thanks for all the information on Lightroom 5.2, but I’m completely stymied here. I can’t imagine what I’ve done wrong, but with a brand new iMac, Mavericks installed, and Lightroom 5.2, I cannot import anything–not a jpeg, not a .dng file, not a .cr2, nothing. Location doesn’t matter–it will not import any image from anywhere into the catalog. Am I the only one who cannot import images into this new version?
Victoria Bampton says
Does it give you an error message Olaf? What does it say – perhaps something like file can’t be read? If so, it’s likely a folder permissions problem. Tell me a bit more, including where you’re importing the photos to (i.e. which drive) and we’ll figure it out.
fuf says
I am having the same problem as Olaf. I can’t import anything.
No error messages, it just hangs. When I cancel, it says “nothing found.”
I have even tried to import images to a new empty catalog. Same problem.
any ideas?
Victoria Bampton says
What else is connected to the computer? Phone? Tablet? Card reader? Printer? External hard drives? Network storage?
bob says
I have the same problem. No error message. Just hangs. Sometimes the first 2 photos will be imported, other times none.
Sometimes the previews of images to upload will be blank.
Victoria Bampton says
So you get as far as the import dialog, but it hangs when you press the Import button to actually import them? Or it hangs at any earlier stage?
Felicia Magee says
Since the upgrade to OSX Mavericks I can no longer delete from disk through LR5. Any idea why or what I can do to fix?
Victoria Bampton says
Hi Felicia, does it give an error message? We see a lot of folder permissions issues around upgrade time, so if you tell me exactly what happens, hopefully we can find a fix for you.
Felicia Magee says
After selecting Remove Photo>> Delete from Disk>>
It prompts “The file name “__” could not be moved to the trash folder.”
Victoria Bampton says
Using Finder, create an empty folder on that drive and then trash it. Then try deleting from Lightroom. That sometimes does the trick.
Felicia Magee says
Just tried that and unfortunately it didn’t work. Still come up with the same problem.
Victoria Bampton says
Are the photos on an internal drive, or external, or NAS? Does it get deleted but not moved to the trash, or doesn’t it go anywhere?
Felicia Magee says
The photos are on my internal drive. When trying to delete out of LR they don’t go anywhere. It won’t allow the files to move to the trash, but I can remove from LR then delete them directly from the finder. It’s just a much more time consuming process.
Victoria Bampton says
You could give the suggestions in this thread a go: http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://forums.adobe.com/thread/881730)
Steve Murez says
Hi Victoria,
I’m having a different, and more bothersome, problem with LR 5.2 since Mavericks. I only see the small screen, of the two I’m running, but not the main screen. So no matter what I type or click, it seems to be responding, but I just don’t see the main LR screen at all! So I can’t use the program, obviously. What do you suggest?
thanks,
Steve Murez
Victoria Bampton says
Any chance you had another screen attached, which is now disconnected? Or the main window might be in another space?
Martha Flores Al-Beitawi says
you need this update to fix this problem
http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(265883)a(2791170)g(22913796)url(http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5647)
Joe Meirose says
That is the currency version of 5. People are wanting a fix without upgrading, which won’t happen.
annoyed lightroom user says
infuriating. I want my damn colors back
Victoria Bampton says
It’s a change in the operating system, so Adobe don’t have any control over that, sorry. All they can do is update their shipping software to work around the issue. Other than upgrading Lightroom, the alternative is to go back to an older operating system that was supported by your old Lightroom version.
Lu Padula says
hi
what about LR 4 the sliders are going to be black and white
scp says
Does Maverick allow tethering with canon 5d MK3?
Victoria Bampton says
I haven’t heard anything to the contrary scp, but I don’t have one here to test myself.
dominique says
Hi. I did upgrade yesterday… I may have found a bug: whenever I sort my library with attributes or metadata, Lightroom doesn’t display anymore the count of the images. very anoying! anyone else has the same issue?
Victoria Bampton says
I can’t reproduce it so far. Tell me exactly what you’re doing and where you’re looking?
Joe Meirose says
I spent the last 2 days on the phone w/ Adobe tech support concerning the loss of colors in the sliders in LR 4.4. The reps (I spoke w/ 3) had me do all sorts of trouble shooting to resolve the issue. Today they ‘escalated my case’ and are suppose to be calling me back at some point. They, nor I, thought it had anything to do w/ the new OS. Apparently I wasted the last two days. Hope they (Adobe and/or Apple fix this little glitch. While the sliders all still function perfectly, I now find myself stumbling without the visual guide a bit. It’s a little annoying and slows me down a touch.
Victoria Bampton says
Oh dear Joe, sorry to hear that. There is an official technote on the subject, so the tech’s should have been aware of it. It’s unlikely to be fixed in LR4 as it’s no longer shipping, but LR5’s a pretty solid upgrade.
Joe Meirose says
Thanks. Perhaps the tech support people in India didn’t get that memo. I should have looked myself. I have been stalling on the upgrade to CC, but this will push me forward rather quickly. 😉 Funny how the little things throw me off. haha Glad I found your blog/web site. I’ll be following w/ interest. Cheers.
Joe Meirose says
Just upgraded to LR5. Sliders have color again. lol All is well now. 😉
Lu Padula says
is LR5 a paid upgrade?
Joe Meirose says
yep
Lu Padula says
Thanks a lot
For the info
How much for LR 5 $$$$
Victoria Bampton says
$79
Lu Padula says
hi
so no luck for me using LR 4?
on the b&w sliders?
Joe Meirose says
Nope
Lu Padula says
please let me know on LR4
what to do with black/white sliders
Joe Meirose says
Upgrade to LR5. Only solution.
Davide Anastasia says
That’s not a solution, that’s money given to Adobe.
Victoria Bampton says
There are 3 options:
1. Roll back to an older operating system that supports your older software.
2. Upgrade Lightroom to match your newer operating system.
3. Ignore it.
It’s a change in the operating system, and Adobe, like most developers, only update their shipping software.
Zeven says
4. Ask adobe / apple directly, and post to forums like this until they respond and fix it..
Gianni Costanzi says
Thank you very much Victoria! I’ll update next weekend to OSX Mavericks! 🙂
