Windows 10 has been available for a few weeks now, but the more cautious among us like to wait to see which bugs are likely to cause trouble. As a Mac user, I haven’t been watching the wider picture too carefully, but I can give you an update on the known issues that could affect your Lightroom use.
Officially, “the latest versions of all Creative Cloud applications are compatible with Windows 10” and they have “found no significant issues with running Creative Cloud products with Windows 10.” (This includes the perpetual license for Lightroom 6 too.)
Good news! But that doesn’t mean the upgrade will be completely smooth sailing, as there are interactions with drivers and changes in file permissions that can still cause a few hiccups. The main Lightroom-related issues are:
Graphics drivers – buggy video drivers are causing all sorts of problems including crashes, hangs and sluggish behavior. The AMD/ATI 15.2 driver (which is included in AMD Catalyst™ 15.7.1) is the biggest culprit at this point in time, and will require the manufacturer to issue an updated driver. (Update September 2015 – AMD now have a beta driver available which fixes this issue.)
In many cases, going to Lightroom’s Preferences > Performance tab and unchecking Enable Graphics Processor solves the problem, however if it’s crashing on startup, you won’t be able to access the Preferences dialog. In this case, you can edit the preferences manually, using these instructions.
Some people have reported that going to the AMD Catalyst Control center > Gaming > 3D Application Settings tab > Frame Rate Control and changing a couple of the settings solves the problem, even with the checkbox enabled in Lightroom. To test the theory yourself, change Wait For Vertical Refresh to Always On, and change OpenGL Triple Buffering to On.
File permissions – when you try to open Lightroom after upgrading, it may say “Unexpected error opening catalog. The catalog could not be opened due to an unexpected error”. Don’t panic! There’s an official Adobe tech note with a solution here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/error—unexpected-error-opening-catalog–occurs-in-lightroom-af.html
Incorrect colors – in many cases, the upgrade appears to be selecting the wrong monitor profile, which can result in Lightroom displaying the photos incorrectly. To fix it, recalibrate your monitor.
MSVCR110.dll – if Lightroom complains that MSVCR110.dll is missing, try the instructions in this tech note: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/error-opening-applications-in-windows-10.html
Older versions of Lightroom are not officially tested, but I haven’t seen any additional reports of problems, other than the issues listed above.
If you run into any other problems, report them at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum
I was having the issue with the AMD 15.2 update. I was most frustrated, since I wasn’t able to turn off the graphics acceleration before it would crash. I was able to solve this problem, by immediately switching to the Library module when it came up on the Develop module. I then closed LR and when I restarted in the Library module, I was able to disable graphics acceleration. Apparently when I opened LR while in the Develop module, it wouldn’t allow a change. This is a lot easier to do than changing some of the other recommendations I had read about.
Great tip, thanks for sharing that Mike!
Software “paper jam” from LR Print?
After my W10 upgrade, all seemed fine until I tried to print some images. The printer kept reporting “paper jam” with no obvious physical cause other than it stopping. On a whim I tried printing from irfranview and voila! no problem.
Has anyone else had this problem I wonder?
I tried to uload a newer printer driver and HP dumped the full software load which crashed on install and then removed itself (and all my personalised print presets).
Second time round I manually downloaded the printer software and it installed Ok and I can print out from LR again.
So this is just to ask if anyone else has seen a software “paper jam” from LR Print module?
LR6.1, (about to update with newer download)
W10 64bit
Printer HP Photosmart C7280
I haven’t seen it myself, but I have seen another report http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/printing-problems-after-installing-windows-10
My software induced virtual printer jam problem returned. I was tempted to throw my printer in the bin, but have recently replaced most of the cartridges!
However the problem appears to have bee caused by still having the old printer driver listed, and LR using that one instead of the new one. Hopefully fixed, now that I have deleted the old entry.
Richard
Thanks for the update Richard!
Hi Richard
I’ve only just upgraded to Windows 10 and now find I have the same HP C7280/Lightroom 5.7 issues, as you described last September.
I’ve downloaded latest software, but problem persists.
I’d be very grateful if you could provide further details on how and where you installed/deleted printer drivers.
Many thanks
Really sorry I missed your query Graham, and thanks Victoria for contacting me to let me know.
Graham. I think this was what I did:
I unistalled my printer software.
I downloaded and installed the latest version and rebooted.
The problem recurred.
I discovered that there was a second entry for the printer in my list of printers, so I did the following:
Settings
Devices & printers
Under Printers I found that I had two entries for my HP 7200 printer (ignoring the Fax version and other various devices).
Rt Click then “Remove Device”
Not sure if I rebooted, but all was fine since then.
Good Luck, (I know how much hair I have torn out over my printer so I sympathise!)
Richard
I did not have time to stuff around wit the AMD drives so went out and bought a second hand GeForce GTX 760 which does have Win 10 drivers and is great for Lightroom and Photoshop…
That’s a good workaround. Is that one working ok? No driver issues?
This is a great post, one that I can only wish I had found a few days ago…before installing Win 10, and getting those LR errors. After spending an accumulated 8 hours trying to get some help from Adobe, being redirected, lost, put aside, and even told that I should uninstall Win 10 because it wasn’t compatible with LR6….I resorted to venting on social media. Twitter finally got me a real person…who promised to get a tech to help me, but did nothing in the end.
I’m sad to say that the customer support at Adobe is terrible, maybe they should have read your post first, and then had a bit of training on this new OS. After all, it’s not as if it was sprung on them unaware…they did have time to prepare. But telling customers who have just spent all that money purchasing a upgrade that LR won’t work after all, and that there is nothing they can do for them, just isn’t good customer service.
Eventually I stumbled upon the solution, which was to run LR as a admin by myself. But to no avail, because now we have a critical error from Win10 and the PC is unusable.
If I didn’t love LR as much as I do…I would have walked away from any Adobe products that day, the lack of training in their staff is appalling…and resulted in them repeatedly asking me if I had actually downloaded the file before spending hours on their support lines. It wasn’t the answer to my question, but seemed to be as much as they could help me with.
Jen
Oh dear, sorry you had such trouble getting support. If you ever get stuck on a ‘new’ problem, the best place is the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family as the engineers hang out on there.
I have just moved over to Windows 10 and have not had any of these LR issues (so far…). I have noticed one oddity however which may be due to Windows 10 or may be that latest release of LR CC.
I edit a photo in Silver Efex Pro2 from LR (using Photo -> Edit in -> Silver Efex Pro 2 -> Edit a copy with LR adjustments) , save the file, and return to LR. At his point LR should have 2 copies of the photo – one DNG in colour and one TIFF in B&W.
What happens now is that sometimes the TIFF image from SEP2 is in B&W but more often than not the TIFF image is in colour. I notice that for these images that do not show in LR as B&W there is an IMGPxxxx.tif_tmp file in the folder as well.
I wondered if anyone else has noticed this? The difficulty is tracking down whether the problem is SEP2 interacting with Windows 10 or the latest LR CC update!
It sounds like SEP2 is having trouble saving the file. It’d be worth emailing Google about that.
I contacted Google – quite impressed by the speed of their response. Their compatibility list does not list Windows 10 yet but they say that they have not heard of many issues.
They suggested that it might be a GPU processing issue (like with LR) so recommend the usual steps of ensuring the very latest display driver from the manufacturer and disabling GPU processing in SEP2. This second step appears to have fixed the problem but I’ll keep monitoring it.
Good to know. There have been quite a lot of GPU issues, so it’s a logical place to look.
Thanks for this article, Victoria. I am running Lightroom CC on a laptop with Windows 10, and am trying to set up my catalogue on Onedrive to sync with my work pc.
When I go to my Lightroom.exe file and click on Properties/Compatability, there is no option to “Enable this program to work with OneDrive files”.
Can you suggest why this is happening?
Thanks
I wish I knew Peter! I’m not a Windows user myself, so I’ve never used OneDrive, and when I just tested it, it worked correctly for me from the outset. You could try contacting Microsoft, as it sounds like a permissions issue of some description. Please let me know when you find the solution!
I could open LR5 normally but the photos are not displayings properly. I can see the photos in folders and even able to edit each them. However, the photos are just greyed out like lightroom cant read the files so i have no idea what Im editing. Just a bunch of greyed boxes. Any suggestion ?
That’s the same as the corrupted monitor profile issue I mentioned above. Recalibrate your monitor, or at least to get you going in the meantime, follow these instructions https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-change-my-monitor-profile-to-check-whether-its-corrupted/
I have LR 5.7 with Windows 10 and a Nikon D750 camera. Before upgrading to W10, I just clicked on the icon in the taskbar and LR would start with immediate functionality.
Since upgrading to W10, LR will not download files from the camera unless I run the program in Administrator mode. This means going to the icon on the Desktop, right-clicking and choosing to open in Admin mode. Then LR will work ‘normally’ and download files.
Is there any way to set LR to permanently open with Admin mode by simply clicking the taskbar icon?
Hope you can help.
Tony
That’s a good question, but I’ve been away from Windows too long to give a confident answer. If you right-click > Properties, isn’t there a Run As Administrator checkbox in that dialog? I have vague recollections….
I’m running a dual monitor setup which I calibrate using an X-rite spectrometer. I’m using the subscription version of LR which I keep up to date.
I was using Win 7 and decided to accept the free upgrade to Win 10. Why I would do this, when things were working (“if it aint broke, don’t fix it”) I don’t know, as I have lowered cognitive function due to radiotherapy and if anything went wrong, I was unlikely to be able to remedy it myself.
Loved the interface, then things started to go wrong (some of which have been mentioned above).
Reverted to Windows 7, which went surprisingly smoothly, BUT, took the new problems (permissions etc) back with it. Before brain tumour, I could have fixed it myself. Now I’m going to have to pay somebody to do it out of my pension.
All the above guff = IF YOU DON’T NEED TO UPGRADE, DON’T.
Let MS get the bugs out first.
So sorry to hear of the problems you’ve had Trevor. You’re not the first person I’ve spoken to, who has had to revert to Windows 7 and are still having trouble.
Hallow Victoria: Thank you, for this article.
However I downloaded M.S. Visual C++2012, one week ago and installed it with no success.
Each time it ask delete or repair.
This time I deleted and reinstalled it and it now works.
The previous version of C++2012 is a smaller file.
Regards Wolfgang
Good to know, thanks Wolfgang.
Victoria, did the shortcut for emailing on Export changed on Win? “Shift+Ctrl+M” now opens “Merge to Panorama” instead, is this the right behavior? If yes, is there a new shortcut for emailing?
Yes it changed with LRCC/6’s release (on Windows only) and no there isn’t a replacement, sorry.
I have just upgrade to window 10 and I am using lightroom cc subscription, what I have noticed is that some of the menu items are missing on the import, I can no longer find the duplicates tick box and the import to and from seems to be a cut down version, also when I click import it doesnt see my portable hard drives I have to search for them, I am only an ameture user and I am still learning lightroom but it now seems much harde to follow along with the tutorial videos I subscribe to.
Mick Birmingham UK.
Hi Mick. Have a read of this post to see what’s been going on this week: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/lightroom-updates-what-a-week/
And then you might want to follow these instructions https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-roll-back-to-lightroom-2015-1-1-or-lightroom-6-1-1/ to roll back to the previous update. That’ll bring back the dialog you see in most of the tutorial videos.
Lightroom CC is also misbehaving after I upgraded to Windows 10 a couple of days ago. LR doesn’t crash but repeatedly hangs and says Not Responsive. After about a minute of this it will come good and work normally for a short time and then go Not Responsive again. Basically it has become unusable. Even after trying to preview a couple of jpg’s, or opening dialog boxes LR becomes unresponsive. I have a high spec PC with 24 GB of RAM so memory is not the issue.
I have an AMD Radeon 6900 and have tried the uncheck Use Graphics Processor preference which makes no difference. I have uninstalled the Catalyst software, run the DDU Uninstaller in safe mode and reinstalled the latest Beta driver (15.10) and have the same issue.
Does anyone else have the same issue? Is there a way to prove conclusively that the AMD card is the problem before I replace it with something else? Can you tell me where would be best to get some Adobe support. I’ve never had much luck with their support in the past….
The best spot for Adobe support is the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family as the engineers tend to hang out there, but even then, it’s not guaranteed they’ll reply.
Are you running the latest CC update? If so, rolling back to 2015.1.1 might help. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-roll-back-to-lightroom-2015-1-1-or-lightroom-6-1-1/
Thanks Victoria!
I will try the roll back and see what happens.
Thanks for the great site!
Hi Victoria, I have rolled back to 6.1.1 and it seems to have fixed the problem. It is even running well with the Graphics Processor option enabled.
Thanks again!
I’ve checked the procedure to roll back. So preferences / presets / plugins won’t be lost?
No, they should be fine, but it’s always sensible to take backups to be on the safe side.
Im having a couple of problems with performance in preview rendering. My brand new Dell XPS15 isnt working that fast. While its the fastest laptop for the moment.
Which version are you using? There are some known issues with 6.2.1 / 2015.2.1 but you can roll back here: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-roll-back-to-lightroom-2015-1-1-or-lightroom-6-1-1/
I am still using Lightroom 3.6 (I’m out of the wedding business but still shoot pictures for work). If I upgrade to Windows 10, will I have any problems? I have been using Win7 Professional 64 bit for several years. I do not want to lose LR.
I haven’t heard of any issues, but LR3 hasn’t been tested on Windows 10 as it’s fairly old now. Worst case scenario, if you ran into a problem, you could upgrade LR.
I have Lightroom 4.64 installed on my Vaio (Windows 7) and have been offered Windows 10 free. I enjoy using Lightroom very much and fear that because I am not very confident/knowledgable with my computer, if I have problems after updating I won’t be able to solve these. I’d be interested to know whether Dick was successful in downloading the Windows upgrade. Are there now any known problems with LR 4 and Windows 10?
In similar vein to Dick’s question, I am running LR5 (most up to date patch) that I only bought last year… are you aware of any issues with LR5 and Windows 10?
Nothing specific Patrick, and I’d have thought we’d have heard loud complaints by now.
Paper jam issues with Lightroom CC Windows 10 to a HP Photosmart D7260.
I have unistalled drivers/app for the HP printer and then reinstalled them. LR print module send to print. Paper loads (4×6 or 8×10 no difference). Paper seems to be at the print heads the o/s reports paper jam. To me look like the file to be printed gets lost, if that is possible.
Same image loaded in photoshop cc prints fine, photo exported as jpg, prints fine from windows app.
Any idea what to do here? Needless to say all this worked before upgrading to windows 10. But to me it seems adobe (from LR) is not sending the file to the printer.

After several attempts to resolve the Lightroom/HP Photosmart Printer ‘Paper Jam’ issue, by uninstalling/reinstalling HP Printer drivers (all to no avail), I have now recently found a different solution.
I have done this by the ‘Add a printer’ route, so that I now have two sets of preferences for my one printer.
The steps required are as follows:
‘Add a printer’
‘The printer that I want isn’t listed’
‘Find a printer by other options’
Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings’
‘Choose a printer port’
‘Use an existing port’
‘USB001 (Virtual Printer Port for USB)’
‘Select Manufacturer’
‘Select Printer’
This process has worked for me with Lightroom 5.7.1 with an HP Photosmart C7280 Printer.
I think this way I’m probably using a Windows 10 driver to run the printer, rather than an HP one.
So now I select from ‘HP Photosmart 7200 Series’ for printing from all other Apps or ‘HP Photosmart 7200 Series (LR)’ for printing from Lightroom.
Success, did not think of trying that, learn something everyday.
Thank-you very much,
Alexander
Having sorted the paper jam problem, I was then able to delete the earlier printer driver and just use the newest one with all my programs

Richard
Has worked a treat for me too ending months of frustration with my B9180.
I deleted anything I could find associated with HP as well as removing the printer and deleting the driver. Then followed the above procedure.
Works great and no annoying HP pop-ups!
Thank you.
Glad you were able to fix the problem.
I don’t know if anyone else has had this issue but I just bought a camera with GPS support so when I opened the map module to see if the embedded coordinates in the image file worked all I got was a white screen and no map. I unchecked the graphics accelerator tick box, re-started Lightroom and the map now functions normally. So I guess other modules react to graphics acceleration in some fashion, as well.
Thanks for sharing Larry. It would be worth reporting at the Official Feature Request/Bug Report Forum at http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family as the checkbox isn’t meant to affect anything else.
Am having trouble connecting my folders in lr version 5.7 to the photo files on an external hard drive. This is after migrating LR from a desktop to a laptop running Windows 10. When I click on Find Missing Files the folder is not loaded with photos. The former location of the external hard drive on the desktop was “E” and now that its plugged in to the laptop its “D”. Would this be part of the problem or am I experiencing a W10 issue? Thanks.
You’ll have to explain “When I click on Find Missing Files the folder is not loaded with photos”. Yes, if the drive letter’s changed, you’d need to navigate to their new location. Read through these instruction on how you should have moved to the new computer https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-move-lightroom-to-new-computer/ and follow the steps to find the missing photos.
Have you heard any feedback on installing Lightroom 6 on a PC that already has Windows 10 installed? Currently upgrading to a new computer and to new LR software at the same time. Hoping to stay away from LR CC for the time being since photography is just a side gig.
Should be fine. Just update to 6.7, which is the latest version.
