Your presets dissapeared? Here is why!
In fact, they did not dissapeared; They just move around your hard drive with different folder names...
Wanting to export a Catalog for my wife to let her choose/pick photos to be printed (with her own computer account), I taught that by including my export presets would save her from configuring them for the job at hand. So, in the Preferences -> Presets Tab, I ticked the "Store Presets with Catalog" box. Back to my own tasks, I discovered that all my presets were gone!
Searching for ".lrtemplate" files on my hard disk and the backups (before they were overwritten), I discovered the following: For each user, the presets can be at one place plus the number of languages supported by Lightroom. Hence, in my case, 2 users X (1 Standard place + 3 Languages) = 8 Preset folders!!! And you can multiply again for each folder you place a catalog in...
I found that because I do not always use the same language for Lightroom. For example, if you want to Export in french (my most used language), you wont see all the options in the width of the export window; There is no horizontal scroll bar and you can't resize it! Switching to English make all options to appear. Also, ticking and unticking the "Store Presets with Catalog" box made me hunting for the dissapeared presets.
Here is how it works for Windows XP (for now as Adobe will have to do something about it!): (Underscores replace spaces)
- By default with the "Store Presets with Catalog" box unchecked and whatever the language setting, you will find your presets at DriveLetter
ocuments_and_SettingsUserNameApplication_DataAdobeLightroom
- If you tick the "Store Presets with Catalog" box they will be stored the following way for English, French and German respectively:
- Xocuments_and_SettingsUserNameYZLightroomLightroom_ Settings
- Xocuments_and_SettingsUserNameYZLightroomParamètres_Lightroom
- Xocuments_and_SettingsUserNameYZLightroomLightroom-Einstellungen
Where x: = Drive letter, Y = Language Version Of Windows For "My Documents" and Z = Language Version Of Windows For "My Pictures". This, assuming that your Catalog is in the ...YZLightroom path! If you put an exported Catalog elsewhere, you ADD TO THE LIST!
Note that the subfolder names under "Lightroom_Settings", "Paramètres_Lightroom" and "Lightroom-Einstellungen" above are all in english! So you can copy your "Original" Presets to any of them with no problem. Hence the question is: What is the point from Adobe to localize only the parent folder or localize it at all???
My suggestion to Adobe would be to change "Store Presets with Catalog" for "Copy Presets with Catalog" and add a place to choose where we want the Presets THE SAME WAY we can change the default Catalog.
