Catalogs XMP box unticked - can I delete XMP files

I used to run LR with the Automatically write changes into XMP box ticked. I don't any longer. Can I destroy residual XMP files? I know, I could try and find out the hard/easy way...!

Yes, that should not give any problems. But why don't you try it with just a few files?

XMP Files created by Adobe are never required by LR. You can safely delete them, just as you could have safely NOT created them. All of the information in the XMP is always contained in the LR catalog file. There are certain processes invoked in LR (HDR? Pano?) where LR will automatically create an XMP file associated with the original RAW. These are only required during the process and can be deleted without concern after the process requiring them is complete

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure that the logical response to the question was the right response ! And yes I'll make doubly sure by just moving some XMP files away somewhere else first.
