Would bookmarks be a daft/superfuluous idea?

Often I find I need to navigate away froma folder to search for something else and that may in turn take me well away from where I was before but I would like then to return quickly to exactly where I was ( not just the folder but to the actual image) yet dont want to view it outside of the folder it is currently in nor to have to scroll or hunt for it from the top of the folder when I return

I wonder whether it would be feasible/useful to be able to 'bookmark' an image?

The idea I have is that in say, the bar above the filmstrip, you could right- click to choose an icon from 2' or so icons , this icon would sit in that black space above thefilmstrip along with any others you have set to an image, and then when you needed it, the action of clicking on the icon would return you to exactly the same image in the same folder where it was set

These wouldnt need tobe thumbnails (too complicated???)_ but simpe icons, like a clover leaf, a sword, a tartan, etc. This is obviously a short time solution not suitable beyond where ones own memory stretches but I would find it immensely useful

I got this idea from medical program I use, where one may be searching thousands of books and want to return to a specific page ina specific book, so you ca bookmark the page by setting an icon at the top of the viewing window

Does anyone think it has any merit?

Certainly a bookmark has merit and I can recall it being discussed some time ago. I suggest you place a feature request.

Thanks Geoff, done.

I got this idea from medical program I use, where one may be searching thousands of books and want to return to a specific page ina specific book, for many books, e.g. where you want to compare comments on a particular condition or remedy; so you can bookmark any page in any book by setting an icon at the top of the viewing window. Clicking on an icon returns you immediately to the page which it was set to.

Good idea, I second it (have put a request in) as I use it too; and have another suggestion.

An alternative or additional enhancement that might integrate it better with the current application, is to remember the actual image selection in the existing Recent Sources drop down menu, the arrow next to the image name in the area above the filmstrip. Currently Recent Sources remembers the folder or collection only but not the image that was selected.

Also, when using it to navigate back to a FOLDER, it expands the folder tree to the folder; but when the source is a COLLECTION, it leaves the previous folder tree open but doesn't open or go to the actual Collection (nor does it go to the Folder location of the source images in that Collection, in case you wondered). I work in Solo mode usually, and this can be a bit of a bind.

Back to the bookmark idea; being able to add up to say 5 bookmark stamps that would have an icon for quick snapback, as well as adding them to the Recent Sources drop down would be very handy.

If you are not using color ratings for other purposes, could you not just color the image and have a smart collection automatically gather these images? Assigning a color is quite quick.

Still a bit of clicking/scrolling going on to return to where you want to be - I'd like to be able to flick back to it quickly rather than messing about.

But in the current setup, the Recent Sources is probably the quickest (for me at least) - if only it remembered the image I was on.

Though granted I can use an available label/flag etc and filter on it to find the image, provided it doesn't already have a label/etc, otherwise I'd need to remember the previous setting; or use a different filter to reduce the result.

It is important for me (usually) that I get back to the image in context i.e. I want to see it in the folder it was in.

Most often what happens is I am going through a lot of images, sorting , clearing out dross, labelling, flagging, rating etc and I do something (export or navigate away to another folder , anything..) and I want to get back to exactly where I was, to that very image

Now that might be difficult for all sorts of reasons but the example I had most recently was that I had was tat I had set the filter to exclude i mages with no rating.. but I had forgotten to rate this image while working on it, I had got too absorbed in the process, so I had to rmemeber the folder, rating , filter, image position in the huge folder na dthe module I'm in, etc, all in all it took me ages to get back to it. Now if I could just bookmark the image I am currently working on it would be so much easier

A large part of my problem is that while my brain is in 'editing' mode I find it really hard to keep it in 'sorting' mode, I very quickly forget where I am navigationwise etc - yes thats easy to check but when you then add filtering. module changes and so forth and any one little foible that I might have forgotten that Ive done whilst concentrating on something else and suddenly Im in maze

Some people ( most probably) have brains that fall naturally to navigation protocols but some like me invariable find it more of a maze. Now this isnt just program familiarity, I have been using LR long enough now to more or less know my way around it, and Photoshop and any number of other programs, it's to do with short term memory I think mostly and I for one find that when Im working on a computer my STM is often worse than it is away froma comp and that's saying something as I am the sort of fellow who often find himself ina room wondering 'why did I come in here". I dont think it's age related - I have always been like this! I like to think of it as part of the artistic temerpament but the truth might be more that it was all the LSD I took in the 7''s !

Either way - bookmarks would be an easy solution to some of the sorting/navigation problems I experience;) i.e. a 'snap back'

Added to which it is a protocol/tradition now that is very well established - why not take advantage of it?

I agree with the concept. I use 'Purple' as a 'resume here' notation, when I finish work. Don't use anything while actually working, bouncing back and forth.

That label is my choice too for exactly that purpose:cheesy:

Workaround I use - I hit B to add the photo to the Quick Collection, and I can do that on as many images as I need to bookmark. When I want to return to a bookmark, skip to QC, select the image, right click > Show in Folder in Library takes me straight back there in its normal context.

Yeah, I guess that would take an extra second to go to Show in Collection > Collection Name instead of straight to folder, would it?

Ah, good thinking!

All of that requires numerous mouse clicks & scrolling about, in various combinations - the quickest workaround (as that's as good as we currently get) I have found is the Recent Sources as previously mentioned, as the most recent source is always on top; that's a mouse click, then the scroll through that folder/collection to get to the image (or filter if a label was used).
