Workflow Suggestions? Dual Backups in different locations

Hey all --

I was wondering if anyone had and suggestions for my workflow.

Here's what I have (simply put):
Laptop Harddrive
Hard drive 1 (HD1) - at office
Hard drive 2 (HD2) - at home

When it comes time to pull images out of my camera, I download them to LR. My LR catalog is on my Laptop and backed up on HD1. All my images go to HD1 by default.

To "Back up" my images - I physically carry HD1 home with me where I copy the images and the LR catalog to HD2 (just for safety).

Is there a better way to do this so I don't have to physically move HD1, but still can b/u my images to HD2 at least once a week?

Any thoughts?

How many images at a time do you import into LR? If its a large number, than using your "sneaker net" is probably best, and perhaps you should find a convenient drive like a WD Passport if your drive is too big (physically). If its a small number, you could sync through the "cloud", but that can be slow and/or expensive.

I'd suggest never taking HD1 home. Back up at work and back up at home and your catalogs will be pretty close in sync. On the rare chance your house burns when you have HD2, you could loose everything.

Since your laptop is portable, it's easy not to have all your drives in one place. I have a similar system, expect my main computer is a desktop, so I have to bring my offsite back up a couple times a month. As a rule, I just make sure that I don't take it home on a Friday so I don't have it for more than one night and increase my risk.

I use Syncback, there is a free version, and I've been really happy with it.
