I use 2 MacPro's, one at our commercial facility and one at home. I never seem to have the right files at the right place. I considered this setup as a work around. Put all my working files on a WD studio edition 1TB, this includes my LR catalog, and work from that at either computer via firewire. Seems to speedy enough through that. I can then back up using Super Duper to internal drives at each station, after each session. This will give me three copies of everything.

Looks logical to me but am I not seeing something?

As Lynn seems happy, may I ask what the alternatives are (as this is something I've been pondering) in my case it's the Main and Mobile (see sig) setups being used.

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum!

Putting the drive and images on the external drive and plugging into whichever machine is the simplest option. FW8'' isn't back for speed, although it'll never beat internal.

The other main alternative is using Export as Catalog and then Import from Catalog to merge back in. That works quite neatly if you only want to take a portion of the catalog to work on the laptop, or uploading to the laptop and then merging back into the main catalog when you get back.

Thank you Victoria, that's good to hear.

Until now I've rather avoided (like the plague) applications that have a built-in database, as IME they can't cope with my lifestyle ;) especially if they attempt to mask :shock: from you the true filing system view (location, name, etc.) used 'underneath' the application.

LightRoom's catalogues and the import/export of a mere portion of the whole (collection) looks a fine compromise, so for the first time I'm beginning to think I'll stump up the $$ when the trial ends in 27-ish days :cheesy:

Whilst I'm happy to change aspects of my workflow to accommodate the tools used to their best, certain things - like using a mobile laptop with an external drive or two whilst traveling - are unavoidable, and this need to be gracefully integrated into the workflow - am just beginning to see how to use LR2 in this way.

Victoria: by the way, KiwiGeoff ('elsewhere') pointed me at your excellent LR2 shortcuts PDF - thanks for making that invaluable aid available, much appreciated, especially to a LR2 newbie like me.
