If there is a thread about this please let me know... The rendering of the CR2 files from the new 5D2 is painfully slow. I am using lightroom 2.3 ( heard 2.4 is buggy) on a Dual 2.7 Power PC with 4 gigs of ram. Vid card is ATI Radeon X 8''XT It does not seem to make a difference if other apps are on. I am a fashion photographer so I need to see the expressions on the faces of my photos so I can rate them in choosing photos.. I have to wait a good 1' seconds for each photo to render before I can see if the focus is on and it makes edit selections near impossible.. Thanks in advance !

Rich, welcome to the forums....

Well, first off, you heard wrong. 2.3 is buggy. Current version is 2.5 with very few problem reports.

I'm not Mac, so I can't comment on your hardware's capability. Others report sluggishness with 5D2 full raws on higher end platforms.
Workarounds:
a) do a batch rendering of the images, during otherwise down time. As Victoria says, start the process and go get a cup of tea. This will improve the response in the Library Module, where the workflow tools are. It won't help with Develop processes.
b) If it fits your workflow, shoot CR2+JPG. Cull/rate using the JPGs, process with the full raws.

2.3 was ok, 2.2 was buggy. Well, every piece of software out there is buggy, but 2.5's pretty good as they go.

The combination of the 5dMk2 files and a PPC processor is probably your biggest issue. Software's optimized for Intel processors these days, so a new Mac Pro would be a vast improvement. Maybe something for your wish list.

There's a list of speed tips on my blog: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/blog/2''9/'5/'2/hurry-up-lightroom-the-best-speed-tips/

If you're culling, cull in Library module rather than Develop module, and make sure you've pre-rendered the previews, so then they'll be ready for you to flick through. That should make it much more bearable.

Thanks for the info.. Well I don't know what culling is and I don't know how to do a batch rendering but it sounds like these things will help... I know my processor is a big problem but it will have to do for now... I will read the blog and enjoy learning some new stuff !

thanks for the welcome...

Ah, sorry, culling = sorting, removing the duds, rating, choosing, that kind of thing.

If you check the blog post I linked to, it'll tell you how to render the previews (basically select all in Grid view > Library menu > Previews > Render 1:1 Previews and wait for it to finish).

Thanks for the correction, Vic. I thought I was remembering a very quick release of 2.3.1, as a bug fix, but I didn't actually verify that. Nor did I think to ask the OP which sub-version s/he was using.

LOL I realise it's very sad that I remember version numbers.... ;) I'm weird like that! :D
