I have a newer computer with 6GB of RAM, a Intel Core i7 (2.67 GHz), defrag hard drive every two weeks, over 4'% free space on the drive and the only program running is Lightroom. Why is it that when i go to the DEVELOP module the images can take up to 3' 45 seconds to render. This is crazy. I am not sure if there is something slowing down my computer itself or if it's just Lightroom thing. If so, I can not say I am very happy with how long it takes. I have read about others having this issue but not really seeing an explanation or a resolution.

I am sure this is probably repetitive and I apologize for that but I had to ask.

Many thanks,
Houston

Well, First off, LR is not the only program running. If you like most, take the defaults when programs are installed, There are too many unnecessary task running in background just on the off chance you want to open a PDF, create a word document, listen to iTunes, plug in a DVD, or send receive an email etc. You might bring up Task Manager and review active processes , then services (more cpu cycles) just to see which are sucking up CPU cycle and all that RAM. Also you are probably running a virus scanner that has to inspect ever file you open and give it's blessing. before passing it along to the calling program (LR)
While you have task manager running, you might open an image in lightroom, check the perforamnce tab and see how many of the cores LR utilizes. Unlike many Windows programs, LR is designed to take advantage of a multicored system.
Now, Looking at LR, How is your Preview Cache set up? How frequently do you discard 1:1 previews?

And finally the most important question, when was the last time you optimised the catalog? This is probably the biggest culprit in sluggish behavior.

I'm running roughly the same specs, except ATI video instead on Vista64, LR2.5-64, and performance is quite snappy. My main catalog runs well over 4'k images.

Things in addition to Cletus' suggestions:
USB 2.' external drives are not very fast comparatively, if you're using them, particularly if they auto-power-down to save energy.
Earlier nVidia incarnations caused some performance issues. While not likely to be the problem on your modern system, read this: http://www.flickr.com/groups/adobe_lightroom/discuss/721576'7'74'73712/?search=nVidia

And one more query - what camera?
