Why is LR 2.4 so slow???

Hello all. I am new to this forum but not new to LR. I have been using LR 1.4 for sometime and recently upgraded to 2.4 and soon 2.5. My issue is that the new version is so much slower than 1.4 taking up to 2' or 3' seconds to populate each file, and making adjustments, forget it. Is it a settng I have wrong? Is it my computer? What are the system requirements for version 2? Anyone else notice this? Any help in this matter would be greatful. Thanks

Hi Ben, welcome to the forum!

Tell us a bit more.... where exactly are you seeing the slowness? What camera are the files from? And what are your computer system specs?

The slowmness is pretty much all the time. I have a canon 5'D. My computer is is not a great one, but I have never had this with problem with LR 1.4. I have a dual core processor, 1'24 MB of ram and 32' GB of memory. My photos are all stored on an external hard drive with is also 3'' GB.

Ok, so I guess my major problem is going from picture to pictures. Major wait times there. Although the slowness is throughout the program. Just thought it was weird because I never had the problem with 1.4

Ben, please fill in your information in your profile so we can see it all of the time - thanks.
Now with only 1GB of ram you are at the bottom end of what is usable in LR. Certainly adding more ram will help.

Where were the files stored when it was moving from image to image ok in 1.4? My first thought, if it's image to image speed in Develop, would be the speed of the connection to the external drive. Perhaps transfer some images to your internal hard drive and see if that helps?

I am having the same issues as Ben. LR is terribly, painfully slow in the develop module. Initially I had my photos on an external USB drive. Then I added an extra internal drive to the PC and put the photos there. There was no difference in speed.
I can't compare with LR 1 as I only started with LR 2.x

It looks like with your amount of RAM, you shouldn't be experiencing too many problems in Develop (unless you're trying to edit huge files from something like the 5D MKII).

Are the slowdowns all the time, or just when you zoom in (and a full-res preview is run)?

It does appear that you have an nVidia card. If you haven't already done so, you might consider reading up on some of the following threads to tweak your settings there:

Slowdowns are all the time. It seems to get slower with each image.
Actually, I was incorrect with stating it was an nVidia card in the PC (that's what is says on the front of the case). It actually has an ASUS EAH485' with 1Gb video RAM installed

Are you optimizing the catalog on a regular basis? That can often help with speed, especially as it grows (Edit > Catalog Settings > Relaunch and Optimize).

What's your processor like?

I have optimized it recently. It's 57Mb in size

Processor is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core processor 44''+ 2.3'GHz w/ 4Gb RAM

Or, in my case LR2.5?
A few months ago I upgraded my Dell XPS M153' with a 3.''GB Duo core T81'' @2.1'ghz. 32bit.
With 2.4 Lightroom was fast enough - though not mind bogglingly so, and image rendering very annoyingly took several seconds. Now it can be VERY slow - everywhere - from boot up onwards. Just now it took 8 seconds to respond to the R for Crop shortcut. Deleting files takes longer; moving between modules takes forever; using the adjustment brush is practically impossible.
I optimise regularly, have 6'gb free disk space, and only have 6''' images referenced in the catalog. I do write all files automatically to XMP, because I often pop back and forth from CS4.
I have just implemented the suggestion of tweaking the Nvidia controls for Lightroom.exe, and it hasn't made any difference at all. I love Lightroom, but HELP!

Thanks for the reply Victoria - yes I did try that, but it wasn't the cause! What I have now realised is that my laptop had set itself to a power saving option (presumably because my battery was wearing out) and that since the battery has been replaced and the power set back to high performance, things have speeded up a fair bit.
Still slower than I'd like though.....
