Why didn't 64 bit LR install?

I recently put together a machine (specs in sig) using Vista Ultimate 64 bit. After reading some thread here about the 64 bit version of LR, I checked out the LR Readme, where it states:

Windows: The Lightroom installer contains both a 32-bit and 64-bit version of the application. By default, the 64-bit version will be installed only on Windows Vista 64-bit operating systems. All other operating systems will install the 32-bit version by default

However, as you can see from the LR System Info excerpt below, LR seems to have installed at 32 bit. Presumably, this is also why it only recognizes 4GB of my 8GB of RAM (as a note, CS3 also only sees 4 GB):

The Readme is a bit ambiguous as to whether it installs 64 bit to 64 bit OS's by default, or whether by default, 64 bit will only install to 64 bit OS's (but 32 bit can be installed if 64 bit is not chosen). I don't recall having the choice.

I don't recall having the choice to install one or the other, and had I been presented with one (that I was aware of...), I would have chosen 64 bit.

I install all my apps (incl. LR) to a separate app partition, not Program files or Program files (x86).

Any ideas as to why this is so?

Also, I haven't installed 2.1 as of yet as I had trouble with 2.1 on a previous machine. I'll get to it eventually .

It installed properly for me on a system with similar specs to yours except I installed it in the "Program Files" folder. Perhaps you may be able to click on the 64 bit setup file created when the installer unzipped the files and then choose a custom location for installation.

It's probably too late. I guess I could uninstall LR2 and then re-install, looking for a 64 bit installer, but I'll probably be installing Windows 7 soon, so I guess I'll wait until then.

Do you notice any real world performace gains from 64 bit LR? I have a fiarly small catalog (around 45'' images). I'm happy with the existing performance. It's just disappointing to discover that one of the few 64 bit apps didn't install as 32 bit.

MSA, LR really is trivial to uninstall/reinstall. The process doesn't touch any settings, preferences, presets or any other user data.

Just use the Windows uninstaller to remove the 32 bit install.

Look around for an 'Adobe' folder on your desktop, inside it should be the 'uncompressed' install files. Find 'setup64.exe' and run it.

Hi Brad. Thanks for your comments. The fact is that I installed LR about 3 weeks ago, so the installation files are long gone. I suppose I could just run it again, but are there benefits in the 64 bit install that would justify the 'effort' (minimal though it may be)?

Most say yes, some say no.

I think some folks also recommend using some of your 8GB of RAM to create a 'ramdisk' for the ACR cache. Which also may be more complication than you're willing to invest in.

If you have much RAM, you will notice. But be warned that you may have printing problems in 64 bits unless you have 64 bits print drivers!

I do and I do. However, 32 bit LR runs ok, so I'll probably just wait until I install w7.

I just ordered a new machine with 64 bit Vista. I will have 8 gig of ram also. Do I just plug in my CD of 2.' and install it, then go to Adobe and get 2.1? Is there a check place to choose 64 bit when I go through the installation process? I don't have/use the catalog features so I don't worry about that. I don't print, at least so far, from LR either. But one of the reasons I went for a new machine now was for better performance in develop module with a quad core and lots of memory. I do want to be able to use that memory when needed. Any certain procedures I should do to get it all installed correctly?
Boy, I'm looking forward to the new souped up machine, but I dread changing out all the programs, drivers, etc. I'm not good at that.

The installer should automatically install the 64 bit version of LR 2 on your Vista 64 bit if you follow the standard installation procedures. I think the OP's problem was that he customized the installation to a separate partition and somehow ended up installing the 32 bit version.

Ernie, if you have your serial # available, just download the latest 2.1 and enter the serial #. If you upgraded from 1.x, it's possible you'll need both the old and new serial numbers. The installer should automatically install the 64 bit version of Lr. It's twice as large as the Mac version, because it takes 2 separate programs, and they're both included in the download. Let us know how it goes, or if you have problems or ?'s.

OK, thanks. It should be here about the end of next week. Then I can start the job of transferring everything over. I wish I remembered what all I did 6 years ago when I got this machine. Oh well, I'll get it sooner or later.

Look at it as an opportunity to clean out all the old programs you don't use. If you haven't used it in a couple of months, don't move it. (Some exceptions, of course)
