White labels

I've noticed that a large number of images in my catalog have white labels - at least, the little label icon in grid view is white (not empty and not one of the standard colors). FWIW, the catalog dates back to the earliest version of Lightroom and has been subsequently used in all versions including 2.'. Nothing seems to be wrong with the images, so this is merely a curiosity.

A white label, I believe refers to a custom label. So at some point, you must have played around with color label sets, creating a new set of label names.

In Library go to Menu > Metadata > Color Label Set > ; and see if there are multiple label sets available in drop down checklist. If there are others beside 'Default' click thru them, and see if some of your 'White Label' images don't change colors.

This happens because you can apply colors from different sets, but not simultaneously to the same image. It never made a bit of sense to me to begin with, but I'm not all that swift, :) maybe somebody can make good use of it.

So, your answer led me to exploring a bit more and I realized there were label names displayed in the Label metadata set of the Custom Filter that were no longer associated with any Color Label Sets. I probably had deleted a set somewhere along the way. The metadata retains the label name, but not the label color association.

I agree with you - this behavior is probably useful - but I don't see how it is.

I use label Text, without colors, to label images for smart collections representing my SmugMug Galleries.

Yup. The screen shot may give you some idea. You can check it against my Gallery listings at the sight listed in my Sig.

The second shows how I set up the Smart Collection.

For me it separates what is a 'keyword' form what i merely the title of a gallery. That way I can keyword an image Rust, even when that image will not be appearing in the 'Rust' Gallery.

Hmmmm. Let's review. Label sets are limited to five entries right? You clearly use more than 5 lablels. So, as you said, you have multiple label sets. That implies that Smart Collections can use labels from an 'inactive' set? I.e, you have an Architecture label set and a Music label set, and the Smart Collections work, even if you've chosen the 'Default' label set as active?

Label text seems to be, in many ways, independent of Label Sets and Colors. I ignore, in my use, Label Sets. I do use Collection Sets! And I don't use the default Label Text/Color Set of Red/Green/Yellow/Purple/Blue/White in this context.

Like I indicated, this lets me keep Keywords independent of this 'Gallery Label' usage.

Well, that's just too weird. I've just played with it. I thought that the content of the Label metadata field was dependent upon the color applied, and therefore, the color set currently in use. Looks like applying colors will auto-assign a label, but it's not limited to that, and you can more or less type in whatever you want. And then it shows up in the Label filter too. Cool.

I have to cogitate on that a while. I'm sure I can put it to good use.

Hello All,

I know this is my first post but I've been using Lightroom from day one and have been loving every minute of it.

I've recently reformatted my PC and am using LR 2.'. I've noticed that every time I import photos from disk or device that all my photos are labeled with a white box in the thumbnails.

I've never used the labels schemes for I only use keywording.

I've looked into the above suggestions and there isn't anything for me to change. Everything is still set to default.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Aside from Mark's suggestion to upgrade to LR 2.3, which you should do, anyhow, what, if anything is showing in the Label text box of any of these images Metadata? It is right after Rating with the Default metadata listing.

You might also try applying a Color Label to a Selection of images via a number, as in '9' (which is blue) and then hitting '9' again to clear that label to see if that 'fixes' the problem!

Thanks everyone for such quick responses.

Yes Don, there is text in the label box in the metadata. Is this why there is a white label assigned to my images?

Also, there is really no problem with clearing the label. I can either hit '9' like you said or right click/select color label/none. It's just that the whole point of using LR and the reason I love using it is for the workflow. Having to clear the labels everytime I import is just one extra step added to the awesome, seamless, fast workflow that makes LR so good. And having that extra step is well, you know, not good.

Thanks again all, I shall upgrade to 2.3 and see if that helps.

Ok! It's fixed!! I went back and read your earlier post Don. I missunderstood it the first time. If there is any text in the label field during import, all photos will be labeled white for some reason.
I went back and imported some more photos without labeling them and wolla, no white labels!
