Although I shoot RAW I set the camera image to Black and white as I find it helps me with composition if I need to check it, i.e. I prefer the LCD screen to display B+W

I would like the option to keep this view until I have finished with it in LR bt it gives colour thumbs etc usually before I have finished reviewing the pics ( i.e. I prefer to evaluate the composition of the images in B+W first before assessing colour)

Is there a way that I can set LR to leave the pics as B+W previews until I want to see the colour versions? ( without having to set a desaturate preset to the lot?)

No, LR ignores all camera settings except WB and Exposure. And a Grayscale preset wouldn't necessarily help because the other camera settings that aaffect that initial out of camera B&W preview wnt be their either.

r apply a B+W preset on import.

One advises a preset won't work but the other advises it will?

I am confused ( I presume I have misunderstood?)

Why don't you set the LR default to B+W

I couldn't find that in the prefs......?

Try a B&W preset. I am just saying it may not work for you beause it is an LR conversion not in Camera conversion and will likely look different than the one you arae hoping to conserve. Easy enough to test by doing.

Though, as with Color presets, maybe you can develop your own B&W covrsion that is close to the Camera's, not just convert to Grayscale.
