Where is the Preview button?

I have been using LR for almost a week now, and I keep wishing there was a Preview button as in PS when doing an adjustment. For example, if you're doing sharpening and have made Amount and Radius changes, then wanted to see what the image looked like w/o sharpening, in PS you could just repeatedly toggle the Preview button to see a before/after. In LR, I have to go to the History panel on the left and click a previous state, then click the current state to do the same thing. Another not-so-good workaround is to press Alt, then Reset Sharpening, then Ctrl-Z / Ctrl-Y to toggle between the states. Is there a shortcut key or button I have overlooked that will do what that Preview button does, or is there a good workaround?

While in Develop, look at the right side of the tool bar, above the filmstrip. If it's not visible press "T". See the Y|Y icon? Click that for a before and after view. Or on the View pulldown menu, select "Before/After", there are several configurations. I believe that you have to be zoomed 1:1 or closer to see the effects of sharpening and noise reduction. That's why the little warning "!" is shown on those panels, if you haven't zoomed enough.

Another interesting gadget, hold down alt/option - while dragging the sharpening sliders, that'll provide a view of the sharpening mask.

I like using the \ button to alternate a before/after view, rather than some of the side-by-side views.

Brad and Vicoria, thanks for the speedy replies.

My Y|Y view, or \ button view shows the Before state as the unedited state with all the other adjustments removed as well. I would just like to quickly and temporarily compare my latest sharpening changes with the image w/o sharpening but with the color/tone curve/exposure adjustments intact, which is exactly what PS's Preview button provides: toggling it off will show the image with only that adjustment removed.

In regards to Brad's Alt/Option tip, I could not get that to work or see the sharpening mask. My PC's Alt key just changes the panel titles to a Reset [panel] button.

Right-click on the "before" state in the History (or make a Snapshot and right-click on that), and save that setting as Before. Then use the backslash key to jump back and forth between the current rendering and the "before" rendering.

Also, on each panel is an on/off switch that you can use to see the image with and without just that panel's changes.

I have done both of those. I have even moved my pre-adjustment state to the Before image so that after I make my adjustment I can compare it to that new "just-before-adjustment" Before state. All these suggestions are valid and workable, but they require several clicks (or they compare a too-old Before image). The compare with the default Before image makes comparison of a single adjustment confusing because the Before image has the other adjustments removed as well.

I still say it would be very nice to have that PS style Preview key--it is quick and is temporary.

As to the alt/option trick in sharpen, it does work, maybe give it another try. As you said, all the reset options are displayed, respectively for each panel, but if you hold down alt/option and grab and drag a sharpen slider, the display pretty intuitively displays what's happening to the sharpen mask. Don't forget you have to be zoomed in to see it

Brad, you're right, I do get them in 1:1 view but not on lesser magnification, sharpen masks for all except the Amount slider. I can see that these could be useful, especially when adjusting the Radius--the mask shows how much of the edges are getting sharpened. The masks remind me of the High Pass filter. Thanks much for the tip.
