Where do photos go when loading direct from camera

Asking this for my wife, who uses Lightroom to edit her photos. Lightroom is the program that opens when camera is connected to PC. According to her, she works on the photos, then exports them to the external Hardrive (j). Just recently she worked on one photo in Adobe Photoshop E6, but couldn't find it. It was in the external hardrive along with all the photos, but NOT the ones she edited in Lightroom.

I suspect what I just said is not very clear, but what I want to know is, when photos are imported to Lightroom are they automatically stored on hard drive (my documents) and/or is there a way to specifiy where they are sent?

In the import dialog, you are given a choice of:

1) importing the images where they are currently located, not wise, if they're in the camera, or on a removable card.
2) importing the images, while copying them to a specified location. If you choose this option, further options are enabled, and you can choose any accessible harddrive location, including My Documents, etc.

I've attached a screen shot of the choices.

And you can always check where a file is by right-clicking and choosing Show in Explorer/Finder.
