Where did the original filename go in LR 2?

In Lighroom 1.x, I imported my files and renamed them at the same time. This always created an original filename field in the metadata, which I could access by viewing the "location" section of the metadata for that picture in Library mode. But since Oct 14, when I upgraded to LR 2, the filename is no longer there. I am still importing with renaming at that time, so it should be stored somewhere - but where? I can find nothing on this in posts in Adobe, and got no response there to my question after a week, so I'm trying here. Any help would be most appreciated.

In addition if you rename again (as in renaming on export) you have use of the original name.

Thanks, guys! It's great to get an answer so promptly. I will check out Jeffrey's preset builder. I don't normally want to export with a different name, I am keeping a flow with the name I gave it. But it's good to know about the export giving me access to it, in case I need that.

That's incorrect, Mark. It is in Location and also in All metadata view - if you've renamed the file.

I am disappointed to report that the Original File Name assigned by the camera is apparently not available via LR when the file is renamed at import when using the LR import utility, even in LR 2.3. Should one want to rename a file with its original name as assigned by the camera, it is not possible.

However, if a file is imported with its camera assigned name and then renamed, the Original Filename in the Metadata will be the original camera assigned name. I can then change the filename multiple times and the "Original Filename" in the Metadata is still the camera assigned name. This seems to be the only way to retain access to the camera assigned name in the Metadata.

This creates an extra and aggravating step of work for those of us who want to create new file names but have access to the camera assigned name. Photo Downloader via Bridge gives the option to "Preserve the Current Filename in XMP" and the camera assigned filename will show up in the Bridge Metadata as "Preserved Filename". But if the file is imported into LR, the name is not available in the LR Metadata.

My goal is to retain access to the camera's assigned filename at all times so that if I successively rename a given file for various uses or clients, I can always get back to the original file when I need it.

So, here is my question. Do I just need to do the rename after import and come to terms with the inconvenience or is there a better way I am overlooking? Would Jeffrey's preset address my needs?

I'm amazed to see that you're exactly right. This was definitely not always so; I would definitely consider it a bug (which I just filed).

Jeffrey's tool won't help here; it just affects which fields are shown, but not which are retained. For now I think you need to adapt, but hopefully the bug will be fixed in a future release.

Even though I filed this bug, you should too. The more people who ask about it, the higher the priority will be for the Lightroom team.

Interesting! I put it in as a feature request in June, but I didn't remember that it had worked that way in the past. Nice find, thanks Mark.
