Where did the file go?

Hi

I'm new to lightroom but use Photoshop and Bridge.

I have a local disk 'Dec 3, 2''8' in my Library.
Inside I have various folders.
A folder 'students' contains students.

When I open one picture in Develop and make changes the original picture is replaced. I can create a lot of modified pictures but the original is always gone.

I can get it back if I go to the 'Dec 3, 2''8' folder.
I thought that Lightroom left the originals intact.

Do you mean that when you look in the Library Module (either Grid or Loupe) the original is gone? That's to be expected, although I wouldn't phrase it as "gone". The edited image is displayed, the unedited original image is not displayed, but remains unchanged. (To see the original and edited, go into Develop module and toggle back and forth with the backslash key)

Or do you mean something else?

When you look at an image in lightroom, you see the original image PLUS the filters that you chose to apply yo theimage in Lightroom. Outside of Lightroom, you only see the original image.

In Lightroom, the flow is like this:
{Original Image} ==> {Lightroom Instructions} =={new view of Image}

If you want to see that {new view of Image} outside of Lightroom, you need to export it as a new modified image and it becomes a separate file from the original.
