When does LR save changes?

The curse of 6.5fps and my nephew's T-Ball game last weekend resulted in 61' photos to review today. I had started reviewing and rating and was at 547 when the computer locked up. I restarted and expected reviews to be in at least the 5''+ area but they were way back at 37.

So, my question is, when does Lightroom save the ratings and is there a way to stop and save along the way?

Hi Tom, welcome to the forum!

They're saved in the catalog, although it saves pretty instantly, so it seems a bit odd that they all disappeared.

As far as saving as you go along, you can write to XMP, which is either a sidecar file for raw files or a header section for all other files. To do so, select the files in Grid mode and hit Ctrl-S / Cmd-S. You can also turn on 'automatically write to xmp' in the preferences, but there is a slight speed hit in doing so. If this happens often though, it may well be a good plan!

I exited and restarted LR after rating 1'' or so images the next time I went through them and didn't have a problem but I took a BIG speed hit doing that.

I don't usually deal with 61' photos at a time so maybe that was part of the problem.

Rating, editing, posting to the family WEB site done! Time for a nap.

It is for this reason that I have switched to using DNG's instead of Nikon NEF files.. the time it takes, as well as the clutter in the folders resulting from all the side-car files is a killer on what is, for me, an already slow process.
