This is about tools like crop, brush, etc.

They have a default. So for example, right now, the brush defaults to a +4EV adjustment, which I like -- I paint with that, then pull it down. I set it to that.

I have no idea how.

Sometimes I can get the crop to stay at "locked/original", sometimes it defaults to something else. It's not the last value set.

How does one control this? Where is the default value saved?

Crop should always be on Original unless you've changed it.

Brush - set it before you start painting a stroke, and that'll become your new default.

Bingo. It's the "before" I was missing, thank you.

Crop/original -should have asked about the locked aspect of that. and that works the same way -- that was the mystery, set it FIRST and not even use the tool, and it remembers. Thanks.

Brilliant, well done Linwood!
