I'm thinking ahead here. I've got about 8'' photos I've edited in LR Beta. Theses photos are also in LR 2 some edited some not. I want to keep the beta photos with their edits. When the upgrade comes out, how do I merge the beta photos into the upgrade since they will be duplicates? Could I do it as as a separate catalog?

Import from Catalog *should* allow you to merge the two, resulting in VC's of the different settings. That'll be a try-it-and-see once it's finally available though.

In case there is no "merging" provided, my plan to accomplish the same thing is this:

1. Save all xmp in Lr3 (to save all changes to old files in xmp).
2. Load/Convert old 2.6 catalog (to get all old stuff, including ratings, virtual copies, stacking...)
3. Import 3b2 catalog, not overwriting duplicates (to get new stuff, except changes to old files).
4. Do a metadata sync - to pull new changes made to old files from xmp.

The only thing lost will be changes to old files made in Lr3b2 that are not saved in xmp, like ratings, virtual copies, stacking...
