What syncs from LrC to Cloud?

I have loaded a bunch of pics into LrC, culled, edited, and put them into a collection. I have ordered the collection... custom order. Then, I synced the collection. When I access the collection (album) on iPad, iPhone, and LR (cloud-based desktop). I can see the album, but my custom order is not preserved. Further, if I re-order it, say on my iPad, the new order doesn't seem to make it to the other platforms. This is unlike Apple iCloud, where changes on one platform make it to other platforms. I am led to think the LR sync just deals with the individual images, not the album. Does this sound right?

I always have to refresh my memory on how best to sort Albums (ie I do it so rarely). It can be approached using different Lr Cloud and Classic tool sets .. and there is more flexibility there than you might think.

Not at all. "Custom Order" is supposed to sync across the complete ecosystem, including LrC. However, can I just check that when you are viewing the album on LrM and LrD that you actually selecting the "Custom Order" sort order.....that has to be selected if you want to see the images in that custom order.

If you are viewing in custom order in the Lightroom apps, then perhaps the custom order that you set in LrC didn't sync correctly to the cloud. To check, open the LrWeb application in a browser window (login with your adobe credentials at lightroom.adobe.com). Once there, select the album and at the bottom of the grid display click on the "share layout" icon (see screenshot), which displays the images in the currently set custom order. If that's not the same as the order you set in LrC then there's a sync issue there.

I remember being disappointed that the sort order I specified for a synched collection in LrC did not result in the correct sort order when viewing the shared album.

As I do not use this often enough I have to research this every time ( because the options to change this at the web view are not always obvious to me).

I may be missing a trick when setting up the collection or some of the synch options.

The way I understand it is that most of the sort orders are shared between Classic and Cloud including custom. However, which sort order used in one app is not automatically used in the other app. The default sort order in Classic may be Added Order. In Lightroom it is Capture Date

Thank you. What I wonder about is what happens if after syncing from LRC, I go to LrM and change the order. Is it supposed to sync the new order to all cloud platforms?

I suspect that it will synch across all cloud platforms.. but I would check the sort order in LrClassic.. There are rules in LrClassic which prevent certain sorting options if sub collections exist in side a collection.

It depends what you mean by "change the order". If you mean change the custom order, then that should indeed sync to the rest of the full ecosystem (provided that "Custom Order" is used as the sort order in the other apps). But if you mean change the "sort order" then no that won't sync to the other apps. Each app can independently choose to display an album/collection in any of the supplied sort orders. "Custom Order" is just another choice for the sort order, but there is only one current custom order (which can be set in any of the apps, then it becomes a case of the last edit to the custom order should be what each app will see when they select "Custom Order" as the active sort order).

Matt, I think you are confusing collections with folders. There are no such thing as "sub-collections", there are only collections but these can be buried under several layers of collection sets. But collection sets cannot contain images, only collections can do that, so yes a custom order applied to an album in a cloud app should always sync to the corresponding synced collection in LrC.

I will check something out later today... when on my main PC. I wish to clarify two points for myself ..1 related to sorting within collection sets and 2) to clarify my own approach to sorting Lr Cloud albums which originated as synched collections.

One thing to note regarding Collection Sets.....you can select a Collection Set and that will display the contents of all the contained collections in the Grid. You can then use any of the standard metadata-based sort criteria to display the grid in that order. However, with a Collection Set selected, you will note that "Custom Order" will NOT be available to choose as the display order, nor can you drag and drop images into a custom order, i.e. "Custom Order" is restricted to individual collections.

The same principle applies to folders, i.e. select a folder which contains sub-folders and "Custom Order" is not available, it is restricted to single folders which do not contain sub-folders (or, if "Show Photos in Sub-folders" is not selected, it is restricted to folders which directly contain images).

Hi Jim... what I meant to say was ... what happens to the custom order if I add a new photo to the album and move it to someplace within the album. And things are working better now. I was having some issue with sync, where the collection in LrC was stuck syncing to the Cloud for several days. Once I cleared that up by removing the photo it was stuck on, things with the collection cleared up. Not sure why one of the photos couldn't sync. If you have any ideas on that, please let me know. Thank you to everyone who has jumped in here!

As Long you stay in the Adobe environment Custom Sort is consistent. Move to another app platform (e.g. Web browser, slide show app) and you are at the mercy of that apps sort order limitations. Usually this is sort on file name and often nothing else.

I think I needed to use either the Adobe Lr Web Interface or the Lr Cloud apps to set the shared Web albums to sort as I wanted. All within the Adobe Lightroom ecosystem.

I was not trying any exotic sort seq.. I found out how to do it.. but , for me, at the time, it was non intuitive. When I get the chance.. I will revisit.
