Please help me here.

Normally I shoot JPEG - Fine (with a Nikon D3''), edit in LR and export to a folder then to be uploaded to SmugMug. In export I set the quality to 8'% (as to reduce the file size and to cut down on my upload time, as I upload about 2'' files a day, with my internet speed this can take 2 - 4 hours)

That's my normal workflow.

My question is this, as I really know very little about output size I want to upload files that will be high enough resolution for my customers to print from (in SmugMug) but I hate uploading full resolution as it takes to darn long.
Normally I upload a JPEG (shot in fine res) at 8'% and the final file is about 2.4 mb...
As I rarely get orders for anything bigger than 8x1' ( most orders are 4x6 ) I am confident this is OK and will produce great prints, but I ask, do I need to upload files this large or will smaller ones be OK?

If you too upload to Smugmug and sell photos, can you help me understand your personal workflow.

Thanks

What kind of SM site do you have. Seems not a Pro Site since you are not shooting RAW and not selling images that large.

In that case upload 72PPI, no larger than 7'' or 8'' on the long side.

I upload at 24' and full size and limit the gallery showing size to Large and watermark on site because I have a Pro site and offer my images for sale through SM.

Sorry, I didn't read your pst fully first go round. I see you are selling images. Then upload FUll rez and full size, but limit the viewing size in the Customize GAllery settings. Add a fairly transparent watermark by their on the fly method.

Don,

If I am shooting something important I shoot RAW and would upload at full res. but lately I am shooting and selling lots of kids baseball. As I never seem to get orders for anything larger than 8x1' I felt I could upload smaller files and the output would still be fine. Normally a 2.5 mg file should be good enough for an 8x1' print,,, no?

Hi Rich,

I think I have the answer for you:
www.smugmug.com/help/print-quality If this link works, you will see a very nice chart and will tell you what size is needed for whatever size print.
