What should my next computer be?

I've got a six year old computer which is running windows XP, and I'm getting a little tired of waiting for it to catch up to the changes I make.

If you had to buy a computer tomorrow to use with Lightroom, would it be a Mac? Which one? And if you had to buy a PC, how much RAM etc. would you think necessary. (Think in terms of Lighroom 3!)

Thanks!

For the ability to use LR, I wouldn't say either platform is better than the other. If it's your money, then it's your choice. I prefer home built. I don't get a new computer often and have little confidence in my digital dexterity so I hire a friend who makes computers for a living to help me. I pick the parts and he helps me build it.

A dual-core processor is fine right now but quad-core might be better for the future. I have dual-core. A minimum of 4Gb of RAM. I went from 4Gb to 8Gb and can't say I see much difference but the memory was not expensive. I have two hard drives plus an external hard drive. My photos are stored on one hard drive and I back up to the external hard drive. I use a somewhat old graphics card but I've been reading that the new on-board graphics are adquate for photo editing. I do like having dual monitors so a graphics card is a must for me. I've been using Windows7 beta X64 and plan on sticking with that when the program is marketed.

That's it. Now, if you're concerned about being cool, you can have a metal label made for your computer that says, "Custom Engineered for Terriblino."

Okay, good advice

I'm happy you didn't say 'Mac or nothing', because that makes things cheaper. 4GB of Ram, maybe 8. (I've got 1GB at the moment.) I've got one of those friends too. Problem is, he's trying to make me go Ubuntu. It's almost cultlike. I wish Lightroom were Linux friendly! It's the only program I really need that doesn't work with Linux.

Well, I guess I'll have to weigh in with the Mac vote! LOL

I was PC for years and finally tried out a Mac. I still use both platforms but definitely prefer Mac. You need to feel comfortable with your tools so you'll need to take a look for yourself.

But as patrickt implied either platform will run LR equally well.

I'm probably going to build a PC this summer specifically for Lightroom. I was going to go with a quad core processor, but the new i7 processors are supposed to be pretty incredible. I"m not one to normally go bleeding edge, but I guess I'll go b.e. in this case.

Just to give you an idea, my proposed build.
-Asus motherboard
-at least 6, maybe 12 G's of DDR3 RAM
-i7 92' processor
-2 internal 1 tb hd's in RAID 1
-2 external 1tb hd's in RAID 1
Lots of little bits and pieces...:cheesy:

I agree. I went from a 5 year old XP to my cuurent iMac, and I'm not going back to windows again. I really enjoy the Mac way.

Windows ±= MacOS: Exception for the fact that there is a limit to the number of images you can export at once on Windows and a limit on the keyword listing. Those are Windows limitations not Lightroom. That would be interesting to know if those limitations are still there with Windows7...

EDIT: Just found that "PSD files are NOT supported in Windows as a source for Identity Plates"...
