What Happened to the "GPS" Line in Metadata?

I have been beating my head against the wall with the entire geotagging process, but I've made pretty good progress getting all my hardware and software working together properly, and have been able to geotag some images and, presumably, import the gps metadata back into my library (I'm using HoudahGeo). Now that I'm ready to test in LR2, though, I see that the GPS line in the metadata panel that existed in prior versions of LR right under "Artist" (I see it in the much-cited Lightroom Journal article on geotagging) is not showing up for me. I have "All" checked for my metadata categories. Has it been eliminated (I can't imagine why)? Have I inadvertently hidden it somehow? It was a cool thing, even had a right arrow that you could click and presumably get kicked out to Google Earth or something similar to check it.

Help please!!!

It only displays if Lightroom finds the GPS data. Try downloading the image here and importing it into Lightroom. It still has the GPS data embedded in it. Do you see that in the Metadata panel?

It's not letting me download your image, and I was afraid that the answer would come back along the lines that the GPS data only shows up in the panel if it's in the EXIF. Afraid why? Because I know it is there!!! Here's what I did: Import into HoudahGeo right from my photos library, associate photos with GPS data and tag, then save both to original and to XMP. Back into LR, "Save Metadata to File" then "Read Metadata from File" -- per the Lightroom Journal recipe. I know the EXIF data has been written because when I re-import the same image back to HG, the GPS data is already there.

So if LR needs to "see" the GPS data in order to display the GPS line in the panel, then I guess the question becomes, what's wrong in the above sequence that is leaving the new data "unseeable" by LR?

Rob -- I haven't seen many attachments to posts here, but FWIW I am attaching an image that should have the GPS in the EXIF data. I had to dumb down the image considerably but the EXIF will presumably follow anyway.View attachment 244

hmm ... odd that you couldn't download it.

I'm just curious to determine if it your photo or Lightroom. Could you make one of your GPS embedded files available?

My guess is that it got wiped when you had Lightroom write to XMP.

Now that you've had Lightroom write to XMP add the GPS again for just one photo then have Lightroom read from XMP.

OK, I'll try that and re-post the same image. After I figure this out, my next challenge will be to try to master EXIFtool! BRB.

I Think I May Have It!!!

I was going to try one more time to repeat the tagging/saving process for the purpose of re-posting here; but for the first time, I ONLY saved to the original file and NOT to XMP as well. And lo and behold, there's my GPS line back in LR. And an Altitude line as a bonus!!! I'm going to try doing this on a batch basis now, and can't begin to fathom why this is making a difference, but if that's the solution, I don't care!

I will report back, hopefully with closure!

Eureka, sort of . . .

It had to do with saving to both XMP and originals, and while I will never understand why, I've managed to get a sufficient number of images tagged, accurately I might add, that I'm satisfied. Tons of variables left as to why the remainder of the images won't tag, but I'm over the hump and have enough points tagged along the way that I can interpolate as required.
