What Does This Mean?

I have this on a few images, and I can't figure out what it means. Clicking it doesn't produce any action, and there is nothing obviously wrong with the images. I haven't been able to find it using any terms that I can think of.

It can have one of two meanings, normally. The usual one is that the image is either off-line or otherwise missing and LR does not know where it is because it either does not have access to the image or it is missing.

The second way you can get this ? is when you delete an xmp side car that LR was tracking and no sees is not there with the image.

With either you usually will get a pertinent dialog to either locate the image or in the other case, regenerate a sidecar, tell LR to ignore that it is now missing.

Have you tried restarting LR or putting aside the Pref file to see if then a dialog will show?

I guess that I knew that was the missing file icon. It just didn't occur to me because the files aren't missing, and I know that if they were a dialog would pop up asking if I wanted to find them. Trashing the prefs and optimizing the catalog didn't clear it up. The files that I see that on are TIFFs and PSDs. I can't remember if it has shown up on raw files or not. I recently tried storing my files on a networked drive. I don't know if that might have something to do with it or not.

Do you save XMP to the TIFFs and PSDs, either with Cmd-s or auto?

Yes. I save it manually.

If the file is there, my next thought would be a missing sidecar. Is there a sidecar file noted in the Metadata panel?

No. There's no sidecar. Does LR ever save xmp data in sidecar files for TIFFs or PSDs?

Not into sidecars - XMP is a header section of Tiff/PSD.

Lightroom can pick up other jpegs or other files with the same name, and record those as sidecars though.

Removing the files from the catalog and syncing the folder to bring them back in clears things up. I guess that it's just a catalog glitch that seemed to show up when I was using a networked drive. I had other problems with that setup, so I quit using it. Hopefully it won't show up again.
