I think they mean LR is still doing something with the images in that folder. Reading metadata etc etc. I think.

I don't think the computer is still doing something. I have a few in my 'Keyword Tags' bar that have been there a long time. I don't know what they are either.

I think it means the folder contains files with unresolved metadata. Check to see if you can find files in that folder with either the ! or ?

Hi Pindy,

From Martin Evening's book, the plus sign "indicates that some of the images in a folder are for one reason or another, hidden."
He doesn't eleborate as to exactly how an image can be hidden. Guess you'll have to check thru all 129' images and see what is different with one or more.
But, how will ya be able to "see" what is different if it is "hidden"!!!!

Ok, I had a play around with a catalog with a + and found it was quite a process of looking through each folder and finding what was missing or duplicated. Have a good look through your folders and see what is odd. One thing I had was some duplicate imports which I must have done having not checked the don't import duplicates! Took a bit of sorting the correct files and updating the settings I had changed - grrrrrr!! But a lesson learned.

Thus, that plus sign was telling us that we messed up but its up to us to try to figure out just what we did wrong.

But now we know. This is how we learn.

With the duplicates, one would say can't locate original - that of course was the one with the best settings!! Had to sync then delete!!!

Those little plusses and the number/number format

After some experimenting I found the following:

Assume a folder structure with subfolders.
Some of the subfolders have stacked photos.

When I select the top folder and Expand all Stacks, all little plusses disappear and all counts of the form number/number change into a single number.

When I select a subfolder which contains stacks, and perform a "Collapse all Stacks" in that subfolder, one of two things may happen: either a little plus appears behind the number that represents the picture count, or the picture count changes to the numberx/numbery format, where numberx is the count of thumbnails that is visible, and numbery is the count of thumbnails that would be visible if alls stacked photos were expanded or unstacked.

Also, when collapsing stacks in a subfolder, the top folder also gets the little plus sign, or the number/number notation.

My impression is that folders with many photos (>1'''?) get those little plusses, while smaller folders get the number/number notation.

Example for a folder structure with all stacks expanded:

topfolder ... 3133
-- subA ........ 2
-- subB ..... 1771
-- subC ...... 513
-- subD ...... 847

then with all stacks collapsed:

topfolder ... 3126+ (7 stacked fotos)
-- subA ........ 2
-- subB ..... 1767+ (4 stacked photos)
-- subC .. 51'/513 (3 stacked photos)
-- subD ...... 847

I agree with your findings and the impression that 1''' images is the threshold.
Which is a very good indication that 1''' images in any (one)folder is probably not a smart move from the DAM perspective.

Also if one disables "Include Photos from Subitems" under the Library menu all the plusses go away and the count is more reflective of just the images within each folder and sub folder.

Just to append to this thread. If the plus sign is next to a name, it's because the 'Use this as Keyword Shortcut' option has been checked for that keyword. What it does.. I have no clue. But when I disabled that, the plus sign went away...

Have a look at the top of the Metadata menu - you can choose to add a specific keyword by keyboard shortcut, and you're choosing which keyword to add.

And there I thought I was being thick as I couldn't quite work out the true significance of the plus symbol. Tsk, I dunno! :shock:

The + beside the keyword I think is also because it is the current selected/entered keyword in the painter tool (likely the same action as the keyboard shortcut).

I used this recently once, and it's the only keyword with a + beside it, and it's also the keyword still in the context (r/click) and Metadata menu with 'Apply xxx keyword' (can't recall verbatim).
