What an interesting colorspace finding....

Greetings all:

I noticed a very interesting finding while working on my raw files. To start: I'm working in Prophoto in both LR and CS3, all settings synchronized. After finalizing the exposure/HSL markers in LR, I finished the image (as a PSD) in CS3, applying some noise reduction and a little unsharp mask. And that's it; no further color changes. After reimporting back to LR (as a PSD), there was a noticeable color change between the pre and post CS3 images. "Oh, great", I thought..."what have I missed?"

Well, here's the interesting finding....if I view the two pictures instead in the Library module (vs Develop module), the color differences disappear and the two images are indistinguishable (other than the noise reduction applied). If I go back and review the pre/post images in the Develop module, the subtle color changes reappear.

Anyone else notice this? Or have I gone crazy after countless hours in front of the computer and not with my wife??

Couple of things

1. Did you re-import the image from CS3 or did you save it from CS3 into LR?

2. The library and develop modes have had a slight color difference since 1.' release, although much better now, and it has something to do with the way LR renders an image differently between the 2 modules. Although, i'll leave that one to the experts...Don?

I will say that, 1.3.1 has improved in these differences.

I am unclear on your procedure as well.
What I do is edit in PS a PSD with LR adjustments. This creates the PSD file and opens it in PS. When finished in PS, I close the image window and save upon request. A short time later the file refreshes in LR with the changes and no apparent colour change.
Please explain your actions in some more detail - we are simple folks here!!:lol::lol:;);)

Great thoughts from both of you.

Brad: I use Edit a copy with LR adjustments in CS3. Upon completing in CS3, I simply save the image (now xxx-edit.psd). I quit CS3 and go back to LR, and there is the edit.psd image. Your response makes sense to me; I was unaware of that bug. I've rechecked since posting the thread initially; it's only in the develop module that I can tell the difference (which really is pretty slight).

Geoff: I think I go through the same workflow as you, though I save then close, rather than close and have the 'save on request' dialog, prior to moving back to LR. I imagine this is the same thing? If it is, then maybe there's another difference between our two workflows, but if I understand your description, I'm hard pressed to imagine what it might be. By the way, watching a reunited Crowded House on TV right now. Neil Finn rocks. So does New Zealand - can't wait to go back and campervan again.

I appreciate your thoughts, even halfway around the world!

Manny, try and render a 1:1 preview of the images and then see if there is any difference. Previews have different colour spaces dependent on size and that could bring a subtle difference in appearance.
I know also that when printing the prints come out much sharper and cleaner than on the screen.

Split Enz are doing a brief reunion tour here at the moment !!

Not quite right -- rendered previews are in the same color space regardless of size. It's just that High quality previews are in ProPhoto RGB (same as Develop), while Low and Medium quality previews are in Adobe RGB.

Can you point me at this documentation? I find that a little ridiculous to use different color spaces for different magnifications. I don't doubt you for a second. I'm just interested in knowing the "why" behind that.

Jon, I said it doesn't use different color spaces for different magnifications. They're all the same color space. The only thing that affects color space is your preview quality setting in the preferences.
