I'm just now tinkering around with the gallery generate/upload feature of LR. It's kinda neat, but it doesn't seem very useful right now. Reason being, it seems to take ages just to generate and upload a 7 image, Quality 7', 45'px LR HTML gallery.

I was going to possibly start using this as a quick and easy way to share images, but it doesn't look like it's all that feasible...lacking the quick part. I can't imagine trying to generate and upload a more extensive gallery...of say 1'' pics.

I don't know if it's my DSL, my server or LR though. I'm not sure how I'd even determine that.

Anyone have any thoughts on it?

I use it all the time, sure - it's not very quick, but it is easy. I did an event last weekend and uploaded 13'ish pictures with the LRG paypal template and it took around 1'-12 minutes with NO interaction. That's perfectly fine to me. If I'm doing big galleries then I would leave it running when I went to bed.

How long does it take to create the gallery on a local disk? It took less than 3 minutes to create and upload a 28 image gallery over my cable connection. DSL is slower than cable, but it shouldn't take all that much longer. I would guess that it's a server issue.

That would be nice but mine was lagging into hours for just 7 images. Seems like it's my FTP timing out though. Galleries generate on-disk fast(ish) but even those aren't impressive.

The FTP facilities are more of a convenient add-on than a major feature - if you're having trouble, I'd just export to disc and then use dedicated FTP software to upload.

Thanks. I don't figure on using it much anyway. I already have a batch upload via ftp & .txt file for proofing. It's just cool if everything works well for those few times it'd be handy...like sharing a quick gallery with friends or fam. I don't need to break speed records...but timing out isn't fun. I could walk away from it and/or multitask if it weren't for that.

I seem to be having better success with it now. I have another question though...

Are the FTP'd galleries stored in a temporary, or permanent, cache anywhere on my hard disk or are they sent straight to FTP without being placed anywhere on my disk? If they are indeed stored on disk, where are they?

I believe, just temp storage, but if you want access to them. Export them to the HD, instead of straight FTP, or do both. I export to the Apache Server Folder of my Laptop and use My own FTP to upload.

I don't necessarily want access. Just curious if it's filling my hard drive for no real valid reason...I'd purge it.

In that case it should be just a temp and get auto purged after a short while, with FTP Upload, as apposed to Export.

AFAIK,

Don

Or perhaps it doesn't even store anything temporarily. It may be like exporting (ie converting) and instead of somewhere on the hard drive, everything goes straight to the server.

BUT if I don't shoot anything for awhile and my hard drive suddenly shows as full, I'll know better. :p
