I have just discovered this evening that I can no longer open PSD files from LR in CS4, I get the following error...

not a valid Photoshop document.

I have tried opening the document directly and via LR but I can't. I have tried a dozen PSD files and all have the same issue. Any ideas as to what may have caused this ? The last thing I did was install the ACR 5.7 Beta plug-in a few days ago but that shouldn't have impact on PSD files. I may try reverting back to ACR 5.6 just in case.

Re: PSD not a valid Photoshop document

Update... reverting to ACR 5.6 didn't help. LR can see the images fine by the way....

I can open PSD files that have not been touched by LR, so it must have done something to them at some point.

If export the PSD as a TIFF from LR it's fine.....

Re: PSD not a valid Photoshop document

Same result here - seems lika a corrupt file. Cannot open in PSCS4.

I imported your file into LR 2.6. Opens fine. Then I re-exported as a jpg as a tif and as a psd - all open fine.

Your file psd-is 6,3MB. Mine is 16,7MB

Can´t help you with why - sorry.

Re: PSD not a valid Photoshop document

Thanks for testing... I have also noticed jpegs have the same issue. I'm a little worried it could be LR3 Beta thats causing the problem.

I can see the jpeg fine in LR but photoshop and preview refuse to open them.

Re: LR Corrupting non RAW file

I have tried opening the jpg files in PS CS4 and it opens them in ACR so its treating them like a raw file for some reason. When I try to open the jpg with Preview I get the error... The file "test.jpg" could not be opened. Preview currently does not support this raw file format.

When I open the tiff files with Preview I only see the embedded jpeg not the full size file. Its as if the files are now being treated like raw files by other applications. If I export my tiffs and then import them back in they are fine.

Something very odd going on here, I have created a jpeg file and tried to re-create the issue but have managed to do it so far.

Re: LR Corrupting non RAW files ?

How was that file created?

If change the extension to .jpg, it opens in CS4 into ACR, and if it's changed to .tiff it'll open into Preview too.

Re: LR Corrupting non RAW files ?

I created a test jpeg file in PS CS4 and can't reproduce the issue so far. However all my PSD, TIFFs & jpegs will not open correctly in Preview and try to open ACR when I use PS CS4 (except PSDs which just refuse to open at all). I have exported the images from LR selecting the original format (not original version) and re-imported them and now they are ok.

As far as I can tell so far LR has modified the files and now all apps think they are some sort of raw file. LR is the only app that has touched these files. I only noticed today so it's hard to tell when this happened. I made a copy of my masters to import into Aperture and had some strange issues with Tiffs and PSD's, first I thought it was just Aperture being buggy but then after some detective work realised it was actually the original files that had issues.

I have been playing with Camera Calibration Profiles in LR for a while now and I have probably tried to apply profiles to non raw files when doing bulk updates with a presets but in the past this has never been an issue as LR just ignores the non raw formats when applying a camera profile. I'm wondering if this has had some sort of effect in LR3 Beta though, maybe it has updated the non raw files somehow. I have write xmp set to auto too.

Re: LR Corrupting non RAW files ?

In the ACR preferences, there's a checkbox to decide whether to open JPEG/TIFF/PSD files into ACR or PS - you might want to uncheck that so it doesn't open them into ACR. All that's happening there is it's seeing your Develop settings embedded in the metadata (from writing to XMP) and wondering whether you want those applied or not.

That doesn't explain your PSD not wanting to open, but it does solve the opening in ACR.

Re: LR Corrupting non RAW files ?

Preview should also be able to see the tiffs & jpegs but it doesn't. jpegs don't display at all and tiffs show up as small thumbnails.

Re: LR Corrupting non RAW files ?

After exporting my jpegs and Tiffs and then re-importing them I had this problem fixed. I went to look at jpeg today and found that it had been corrupted again. I checked other jpegs and tiffs and they too have been corrupted. Lightroom is the only thing that has touched these files. I am now convinced it has corrupted them.

I will have to do some testing to try and find out what the issue is. Lightroom can still open the files which makes even more suspicious.

Re: LR Corrupting non RAW files ?

I have managed to reproduce the problem but only once. I selected some dng images and a couple of jpeg images and then selected update DNG Preview & Metadata from the top menu. It broke the jpegs. I tried to reproduce it again a few times but it seems ok now. I ran an update DNG Preview & Metadata command across my library last week and I'm betting that this is what caused my jpegs and tiffs to be corrupted in the first place.

Re: LR Corrupting non RAW files ?

Finally !!! managed to reproduce this issue.

1) Select some dng images and some jpeg / tiff images in the grid view.
2) update the metadata of all selected images by adding a keyword.
3) Command+S to write out the metadata to all images
4) Run update DNG Preview & Metadata

This breaks the tiffs and jpegs. I have tested this with the 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files' checked and unchecked it always corrupts the files.

Step 3 may not be required but I have run out of time to keep testing this....

I have sent in a bug report to Adobe.

The worrying issue with this is because LR can still access the files ok, you won't know that the files are broken until you try and access them with some other application.

I have backups so could restore my files but it takes a long time as they are in different folders throughout my catalogue. I don't have many jpegs or tiffs so I'm quite lucky in that respect.

Hang on, are we talking LR3 beta? If so, I've logged that one. It's the Update DNG Preview & Metadata that's broken in the beta - it's turning them into DNG files but not changing the extension. If you change the extension to DNG, they should open ok. The same happens if you use in on any files other than DNG in the beta.

It should just write to xmp for non-DNG files, so yes, it's a bug.
