Want to change folder where edited files come back from Photoshop

Hello all. My first post.

I use LR 1.41 and PS CS3 on WinXP. A very powerful combination, and I like it a lot. However (there's always a "however" ), when I edit a file in PS, it comes back into LR with the "-edit" appended to the name (which is great, and very helpful), but shows in the same folder. Which, for me, isn't great.

See, I like all my RAWs (NEFs, in my case) to be in one folder, and I would like my edited version of the NEFs to be in a separate sub-folder "Edited Images". The reason is that I like to use a PS action which will convert a folder of images into captioned JPGs. I then upload these captioned JPGs to my website. (it's an action by Russell Brown).

Right now, I am telling LR to export the edited files (both the files I edited in PS, and any NEFs that look OK by just developing in LR) into a newly created sub-folder, and working that way.

So, my question - can I tell LR to put files returned by PS into a different folder than the NEF it came from? If not, what would be the best way for me to accomplish what I want? i.e., all the edited files (ideally, the PSDs, as well as just the NEFs I have developed in LR, that I haven't needed to edit in PS) in one folder? Exporting?

You can changing the naming scheme in the External Editing tab of Preferences for edited files. Lightroom will place all files in the same folder as the original when using Edit in.. no way to change it.
You could use Export and have CS3 as the post process action. You could then you Sync Folder to bring the saved file in (or saved it to the watched folder).

I like the naming scheme; just hoped for a different location for edited files. Oh, well.

OK .. so I would export oout the NEFs I want to further process, and somehow tell LR to open each NEF in PS CS3 after it copies it to the folder I want?

I'll have to read up on Sync Folder; I've never used that command before.

Yeah, I'd follow Sean's idea on this one.

Export the NEF to the subfolder, and in the post-processing actions at the bottom, put a shortcut to Photoshop CS3. That'll automatically open the exported file into CS3. You probably won't want to use it on toooooo many files in one go, as it'll open all of them, but if you save it as an Export Preset, you can access it through the right-click menu to do one or two at a time. And then Synchronize Folder will look at the folder and import any files that aren't already in your catalog.

It's easier in 2.', or it will be, anyway!
