Virtual copy from TIFF

Question to gurus.
In Aperture the virtual copy of TIFF file is TIFF file in the library (in case of referencing files in their original locations). How LR creates virtual copy from TIFF? Does it duplicate TIFF within a library or creates referencing structure (in the library, of, course), which will hold all changes made upon the file?

Other than rendered previews it is just a Database copy of the image file, be it Tiff, Jpeg, PSD or Raw.
