I just started using Lightroom 2 and I think I made a mistake during the export process. I was adjusting my photo's as a virtual layer and then exported the virtual layer thinking this was an image I could use for printing, I uploaded the image to a lab for printing and they are saying they are just getting a blank file this is because I exported a virtual layer correct? I think it's time to buy a tuturial.

Exporting a virtual copy should result in a real printable file, just like exporting the original. So that's not it -- there's something else causing the "blank file". Does the file look blank to you when you try to view it?

Can you detail your export settings please.

specified folder- put in subfolder checked(not sure what that means yet)untitled export
file naming- custom-original file number
file settings- tiff-uncompressed-adobe(RGB1998)-16 bits

I'm not sure if the problem was the upload- I was using a broadband connection, I tried wireless and plugged in 16 bit tiffs can be sent that way correct.

Robert, a lot of printer won't be able to manage TUFF edit: that was meant to say TIFF !! files.
You would be best to ask them what they want, most want jpegs in sRGB.
Although you TIFF files would have been large and the upload/download may have failed, I think the first option will solve the problem !!

I think the file size(64mb) is to big to upload, the lab requests the largest possible files they even accept RAW, it's a b&w so a 16 bit tiff is the best for printing it is a lab that specializes in b&w. I will probably just burn the images to disk and mail that.

Not all TIFF files are the same. I just posted a problem I've had with a 16 bit TIFF exported from Lightroom

About two years ago I was working on a software program that had to export a TIFF because the network folks had a special program that could take a TIFF and push it through the firewall as a PDF. I discovered that there are a whole slew of special tags in TIFF files and that not all TIFF generators use the tags the same way. I ended up having to go through a dozen different Word to TIFF translators before I found one that their special program wouldn't mangle in the final PDF.

It probably has nothing to do with the method of uploading and everything to do with the tags put in the TIFF file by Lightroom, tags which your printer lab's software is not happy with. Try an 8 bit TIFF. Or talk to them and see what kinds of development to 16 bit TIFF other people are using successfully.

Thanks for the help

It must have been the upload process, all my files are intact and not corrupted. I burned them to disk took the disk to work opened it on 2 other computers with photoshop and everything is good. I'm sure you all will here from me again as I have one foot in digital and another in film, the problem is I'm still carrying both camera's in the field, I need a sherpa for a simple 4 hour day hike.
