Virtual Copies: Can they be added or deleted from Smart Collections

I'm trying to drag a virtual copy to a collection or smart collection, but the option is grayed out. This seems to defeat the whole purpose of re-purposing VCs.

Am I missing something?

When you say "the option is grayed out", what option do you mean? I can drag VCs from the grid to a collection (like other drags, you need to grab the photo itself, not the gray border around it).

You can't drag into a smart collection, though. Membership is defined by the smart collection rules; you can't arbitrarily add or remove photos from a smart collection.

so even if the VC is from a photo in the smart collection?

If the Virtual Copy meets the Smart Collection inclusion criteria, it will be included, otherwise, not. But dragging won't work.

e.g. SC = all photos containing containing keyword 'Elizabeth'. Does the VC contain keyword 'Elizabeth'? Probably, if you duplicated it from the SC. Who knows if you duplicated it from elsewhere? I presume your SC selection criteria are more complex than this, but that's where you have to look.

You might want to add "Copy Name doesn' contain Copy" to the rules in your smart collection. This will exclude all virtual copies from it.

Many of my Copy Names don't include Copy. That is the default initial name, but I change them right after I create them most of the time.

Well, then exclude those names if possible with the naming schema chosen

Another option would be to combine the smart collection with an Attribute Filter, where you can select Master Photos only.
