When I am scrolling through the library , at the start its fine, but I I scroll back through the library, it often just put up grey rectangles and can take several minutes before they become 'pictures'

When I do eventually find what I want the pictures will then open in 'Develop' fine so they're not corrupted.
It's just happening today, about 50% into Library (based on scroll bar) and slowed down badly.
It's not PC processing ...that is only at 2.0%, memory less than 20%, GPU 1%
So there isa HUGE amount of horse power available, its just not using it

Screen shot attached .... been like that for over 5 minutes ....... and is very unresponsice, its not crashe, but dreadfully slow.

Is there a 'rebuild' or similar I can do
to library to speed things up.
Catalog is 12,300 files and 5.1GB

You can rebuild your previews any time you want.. either for your entire library or for selected images or folders or collections.

I use a preview size of approx 2400 pixels (which suits the display area available in the centre column of library or develop modules).. so I am not creating preview sizes so big that they are not used.

The option to rebuild previews is available via the menu.. I will post a screen grab when I get back to my office.

I only keep previews for the last 12 months.

Initially, the thumbnails that you see are the embedded JPEGs from the original file Lightroom builds it own thumbnails form the RAW data. It is this interval that you could see the gray place holder. The time it takes between JPEG thumbnails and Preview thumbnails should be brief and momentary. If this is noticeable, then I would look at the free space available for temporary files on C:. It should be a minimum of 100GB for temporary files. Other areas that could slow down the Preview building process is inadequate RAM and VRAM, Previews are built in parallel and this could be impeded if you don't have very many CPU & GPU core processors.
