Viewing jpg and nef

when I import new pictures in jpg and nef (Nikon) in LR, the jpg looks as I expect but the nef are much too bright. what could be the cause?

I'm pretty sure that this is normal. The jpg has the in-camera color space and gamma applied before you see it rendered. The nef file is rendered exactly as shot without any in-camera processing. The nef will look particularly bright if you have "exposed to the right" on your camera histogram.

After some image manipulation in Lightroom's Develop module the nef file should look more as you are expecting. See if this helps.

But the short story is: the JPG was processed from a NEF into a JPG by the camera's DSP (using whatever settings you set in picture control), the NEF is a dump of what the sensor actually saw, unmolested by the DSP. The camera (imho) does a pretty good job of rendering a JPG, but it throws a bunch of information away when it does so.

Active D lighting plays a big part in the exposure. If you use Lightroom and shoot RAW then turn Active D lighting off in the camera. Nikon's Capture NX can use the Active D lighting tags in the file to process it correctly but LR cannot.
