Video on how to use Adjustment Brush?

Is there one out there?

I tried to use it yesterday and I saw 2 options. To increase Exposure or to increase Brightness. A picture I took yesterday of a Netball game had a girl with her hands over her forehead because it was a sunny day. Her face was a bit under the shadow as expected. I tried filled light but results was not too good. I thought I could use the adjustment brush to lighten up the shadowed bit but I could not work out to use Exposure or Brightness. On top of that, I selected the brust and clicked the face and a round circled appeared on her face. I tried moving the Exposure or Brightness slider but nothing worked. Am I missing a step somewhere?

In general, I tend to like Exposure over Brightness.

I don't think you're missing a step - it just takes practice. Simply selecting the brush and clicking can produce odd results. In this case, you'd probably want a smaller brush, set with some feathering and a little less density (painting it on in a less intense way). Then, you'll want to click, drag and paint around a bit. With enough feathering and practice, it can provide smoother results. (As with anything, practice is the key.)

I can confirm this. I expected shadows and highlights to become greys, but that isn't what happens. It's like the brush exposure/brightness only works on mid-tones, and hardly does anything to the extremes.

You expect the highlights to come down in value to grey? Or just the shadows to come up?

Technically, Brightness affects only the midtones (as you mentioned). But, Exposure is intended to move the entire tonal range up or down. If you're looking to make a deep shadow completely light, however, that might not always work. Especially if it's pure black.

I did try this prior to my post but the Fill Light lights up the entire subject.

Thanks for the tip.

A noobie question though..when I use Fill Light, the correct step is to reduce/increase expousre to mix and match to makethe picture look good again but do I need to fiddle with the Black again? I noticed that if I use fill light to compensate for some light shaddows in the face, the pictures gets rather washed and then when I incress black or re-adjust exposure, the picture goes back to pre-adjustment stage where the lightly shadowed face is dark again.

Patrick, you will need to use the other sliders after fill in my experience along with brightness and contrast.If you want you can send me a copy of the file and I'll have a bash at it and email it back with the settings and [email protected]
