I haven't used LR in a few months and I am trying to import some photos and it take about 15 minutes to import just ten photos. In the past it was a lot quicker to import photos of the same size so I am wondering what has "changed". my computer hasn't changed, i have 2 gig of RAM, and a celeron 1.6ghz processor. I am wondering if i was using lightroom 1.4 before or an earlier version.

i am importing raw files from my hardrive and converting them to DNG files. The catelog has about 7,''' photos in it and the photos are stored on two different partions on my hardrive. I have standard size preview set. my hardrive has several gigs of space free. i have run updated versions of my spyware and antivirus programs. I even did a fresh reinstall of lightroom.

Any suggestions on what I can do to speed up my imports will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave

When you say it's got several gigs free, how many is that actually? Hard drives like spare space.

Are the originals raw files on the same drive as the DNG are going to be stored on?

Hi Victoria,

Thanks for responding to my question. My C drive where lightroom program files and windows is stored has 6 gigs free. in the past (when importing was faster) this drive had usually only 2-3 gigs free.

the other partition which is where my lightroom database and photos are stored has only about 4 gigs free (which is about what was free before i noticed the slow down in importing my picks) both the raw and dng files are in this partition. I am going to try to free up some space but I really can't free up much more than 5 gigs. i have a laptop, with only an 8' gig hardrive and I am traveling so I dodn't have an option to get a bigger hardrive.

my current catelog has 7,''' photos. would it speed i=up importing if i started a new catalog and then at a later date when i have access to a bigger hardrive merge my catalogs?

cheers,

Dave

new catalog make the import a lot faster

Hi Victoria,

just to let you know, i created a new catalog and the import was very much faster. problem solved.

cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave

That's great to hear that's fixed it for you.

You might want to consider buying a little USB external hard drive for storing some of the data on your laptop - operating systems will run much faster when they have space to spare.
