Lightroom Classic - latest version (can't check actual number as the program is frozen
Operating System
  1. Windows 10
Hi,
I'm new to Lightroom Classic. Up to a couple of days ago catalog backups were almost instantaneous (the catalog size is only 140Mb). Now, however, I have tried to close LR and said yes to the backup now question. An error message appeared to say that it could not back up to the location (same as used previously) and suggested trying a new location. I selected a local location in my internal 3TB drive and the backup proceeded. However, it has now been running for about 2 hours. The on screen message says Backing Up "Lightroom Catalog-v12" .... Compressing catalog backup.

This cannot be normal! Can anyone suggest a solution. (The only other running program is the Chrome browser)

The backup is still compressing the catalog and is causing periodic freezing (each lasting several seconds) of the PC. I will have to cancel the backup to regain control of the computer! ......(after cancelling) the PC is now operating normally, so it was definitely LR causing the freezing problem.

Yep, cancel is fine. Then next time you back up, see if it runs ok? If not, we can troubleshoot further.

You on windows or mac? If you are booting off an SSD (and you should be), create a folder on the SSD boot drive and backup to that and see what happens. That backup should of course be very fast - a matter of seconds. You sure you are not generating a bunch of big previews? No, you said you were backing up on exit. Do you have an internal spinning HDD? If so, try it there too. Then try it with an external SSD and an external HDD and connect it to your faster USB A or C port and make sure you have a goof cable. If the cable is old (like over a year) or came with a phone or cheap charger, throw it away and order some new ones.....
